Central holds off pesky Vidor, 34-28 David Rollinson The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — The Central Jaguars scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth period to slip past the gritty Vidor Pirates 34-28 at Babe Zaharias Stadium Friday night in District 22-4A action. The Pirates (1-6, 0-4) grabbed a 28-21 advantage early in the fourth period behind quarterback Roman Franklin’s 4-yard keeper. Central (4-3, 2-2) recovered quickly when quarterback Patrick Fobbs hit swift receiver Isaiah Wise on a 57-yard bomb as the Jaguars knotted it up at 28-28. Fobbs threw his second touchdown pass on the night to seal the contest when he connected with David Mayfield on a 13-yard strike with 2:28 remaining in the game. The Pirates managed to move the ball to the Jaguar 36 on the game’s last series but were thwarted on fourth down. Fobbs completed 12-of-21 passes for 194 yards. Wise hauled in five catches for 113 yards and Derrick Hall had five grabs for 64 yards. Central outgained the Pirates 299-226. Fullback Theron Reynolds paced the 199-yard ground effort by the Pirates with 88 yards on 10 carries while Bo Pillsbury added 56 yards on 11 totes. Central received field goals of 25 and 27 yards by kicker Fernando Uribe to grab a 6-0 lead in the first period. Vidor tied the game early in the second with Franklin scoring on a 6-yard dart. The Pirates took the lead on a 56-yard fumble return by Clayton Harbison. Central bounced right back though with Fobbs scoring on a 5-yard gallop and Mayfield added a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Jaguars a 21-14 lead at intermission. The Pirates were able to tie things up again when Reynolds broke loose on a 41-yard scoring jaunt in the third period. Chales Thomas led the Central ground game with 65 yards on 10 carries. Franklin completed 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards. The Pirates will be seeking their first 22-4A victory next Friday when they welcome first-place Port Neches-Groves. Central will visit Dayton. -

Coach Arrested After Amateur Drug Sting Last Edited: Friday, 19 Oct 2007, 10:14 AM CDT Created: Friday, 19 Oct 2007, 10:03 AM CDT A middle school track coach and former Olympian who was arrested on drug possession charges says he bought the narcotics in an effort to help students. Roy “Robot†Martin is a two-time Olympian and former track star at Roosevelt High School and SMU. He now serves as the head track coach and hall monitor for Florence Middle School in Pleasant Grove. Last week, Martin learned a student was selling the prescription drug Xanax in the halls. He purchased drugs from the student and took them directly to the school’s principal. Martin said he did it to prove to officials that there is a drug problem at the school and students are at risk. The case was immediately turned over to DISD police, and they turned the focus back to Martin. He was arrested and told he’d be facing five counts for his actions. “I thought I did the right thing with the best interest for the school and for the children,†Martin told FOX 4. One student said he thought the school and Martin could have handled the situation better. “He should have done the right thing and took the kid to the office and that would have been the right thing. He wouldn’t have been in jail and the kid would have been in the wrong,†student Marquise Gooseberry told FOX 4. Martin and his lawyer said the arrest sends the wrong message to school staff. “That they should not come forward when they see kids doing things wrong because if they do the same thing that happened to Mr. Martin could happen to them,†said Sharita Blacknall, Martin’s attorney. Martin and Blacknall said they plan to fight the charges.

Lamar State softballers close fall at UH tournament The Lamar State College-Port Arthur women's softball team completes their fall exhibition schedule this Saturday with three games at the University of Houston Fall Tournament. The Seahawks open at 1 p.m. against the host UH Lady Cougars, the 2007 Conference USA champions, who went 44-18 in the spring to set a school record for wins in a season. Lamar State also will play UH-Victoria, a first-year program coached by former Houston Astro Terry Puhl; and Region XIV rival San Jacinto College, which was ranked just outside the Top 20 in the nation at the end of the 2007 season. "These will be some of the toughest games of the fall, but we're looking forward to them," said Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards. The Seahawks, 2-8-1 against college teams this fall, split a home doubleheader with Louisiana State University-Eunice this past Friday. Lamar State was shut out, 0-10, in the opener, but came back to win the nightcap, 8-4, with freshman Shauna Kelly of Nederland pitching a complete game and recording nine strikeouts. Freshman shortstop Christina Jaques of Bridge City had three stolen bases against LSU-E to bring her fall total to 13. She also hit the Seahawks' first-ever inside the park home run and scored twice in the second game. Sophomore first baseman Kristen Botello of Nederland went two-for-four at the plate and drove in two runs, while freshman outfielder Casey Nance of Evadale had two hits in three plate appearances and scored twice. Edwards is pleased with his team's performance. "Regardless of the results, everyone got lots of playing time and that will help us when we start the spring campaign at home on February 7 against Temple College, which was ranked No. 14 in the nation at the end of the 2007 season." The Seahawks's first Region XIV competition will be March 2 at Blinn College in Brenham.
