Gabe, you got to see a heck of a game. -
Lady Cardinal seniors share insight to each other Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — They have known each other for almost all their lives and been playing volleyball for nearly as long. The four seniors for the Bridge City Lady Cardinals are an unique bunch that is now having tremendous success. They are 10-1 in District 21-3A play and tied for first place along with the Silsbee Lady Tigers. Bridge City will face Hamshire-Fannett tonight on the road at Longhorn Gym. From Kayla Fullerton to Lauren Angelle and from Jenna Angelle to Audrey Myers, the Lady Cardinals are having some fun this season. Besides playing volleyball, the foursome spend time together off the court. Then given the chance to talk about one other and their eyes light up. The four split up into partners before each game to warm up and do the same during practices. Fullerton and Lauren Angelle always find each other while Myers and Jenna Angelle do the same. It has been that way since the seventh grade. “Lauren is a very good partner,†Fullerton said. “She has been my partner since seventh grade and my best friend since third grade. We make each other work very hard during volleyball and never let each other slack.†The partnership is not just one-way. Lauren Angelle has equal fun sharing duties with Fullerton and making sure the duo is ready for each match. “She is so serious but cracks me up sometimes,†Lauren Angelle said. “She has amazing serves and helps with the blocks and the sets. Nobody can ever read her on the hits because she is left handed. When I get made she is the one that tells me to just laugh it off. She hustles and she is very competitive.†Fullerton is not the only one who is competitive. “We are great at taking constructive criticism from each other,†Fullerton added. “Lauren makes good passes and has good hits and digs. She is very competitive and is always in the match. She justs wants to win.†Jenna Angelle knows when her partner, Myers, is on her game the Lady Cardinals have the best shot of winning each Tuesday and Friday nights. “Well obviously she brings a lot of points to the board,†Jenna Angelle said. “She is a really, really good hitter. It has been fun to be her partner forever. It feels like forever. Audrey has a great attitude and hates to lose. She is competitive just like me.†Sizing up what Jenna Angelle brings to the table was quite easy for Myers as Jenna Angelle has become one of the best defensive players in Southeast Texas. “Her defense is simply amazing,†Myers said of her partner. “Jenna is very loyal, trustworthy and a wonderful friend. Jenna and her sister are probably the most competitive two on this team. Jenna is a great partner to have and is really easy to work with.†So the partners will team up with the rest of the Lady Cardinals and are still looking towards winning the District 21-3A championship  plus have a little fun along the way.

High School Preview Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader Yours truly Gabriel Pruett is now hosting a webcast high school preview show along with Mike Sanchez on www.setxsports.com. The Orange Leader and the famous website became partners a week ago to branch out and become a strong partnership in Southeast Texas sports. The guys over at setxsports.com have always been kind enough to post The Orange Leader sports stories on their forum and now the partnership takes working together even farther. The audio show breaks down each and every game within every district around to inform listeners of who is playing who and where at with information to go with. Sanchez is a very informative person to be on board and certainly knows his football. Both organizations urge all area sports fans to give the show a listen every Wednesday starting at 8:30 p.m. on www.setxsports.com and to call in at (409) 440-4840 to hear yourself speak on your team. It was a fun show last week in my debut on the show and it will only get much better as the weeks move along.

Cats Morrison was right to be upset Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader I have to admit something to Orangefield Coach Blake Morrison and all the Bobcat fans. After Friday's 49-42 loss to Kirbyville and Morrison's post-game interview, I was a little upset with the fourth-year coach. When the game ended I quickly assumed Morrison would be more than pleased with his team's effort against the Wildcats. Kirbyville entered the game 4-1 and 1-1 in District 21-3A play with its only loss on the year being against West Orange-Stark. Here were the 0-5 Bobcats taking the Wildcats down to the wire and almost pulling off a huge upset. So Morrison should be happy and pleased with what transpired in the game. Boy was I wrong and that is where I grew a little agitated. Morrison was not pleased and called out several times the Bobcats could have made a stop and came away with the win instead of settling for almost winning the game. I simply did not understand why Morrison was not as pleased as I had thought he would have been. It took until almost 2 a.m. Saturday for me to finally understand. He wants and demands his team to take care of business every single play. If the plays would have been made when he expected them to be made, Orangefield would be 1-5 instead of 0-6. It was not enough in Morrison's mind for Orangefield to just scare the Wildcats, his Bobcats should have won. That is what Morrison expects. No more excuses and no more close games, he wants his team to win and win now. The Bobcats even took a fourth quarter lead with 10:06 left in the game as Jeremy Granger scored making it 35-34 Orangefield. After taking the lead Morrison had to watch Kirbyville's Pierce Rhodes haul in two touchdown receptions and the Bobcats only scored one more time. Now do not get it wrong in thinking Morrison was not proud of his team's effort and determination. He would probably be the first person to tell you how proud he was of the Bobcats on Friday. Kirbyville went up 28-14 in the third quarter only to see Orangefield fight back. Later it was the Bobcats having to fight back again from a two-score deficit as the Wildcats went up 34-21. So the effort and fight was all there for the Bobcats in Kirbyville and that will always put a smile on Morrison's face. This Friday night though he wanted a bigger grin, the one you get after a victory. Orangefield will take on Bridge City this week in the Bayou Bowl and both teams come in 0-6. This week I just hope I understand fully where Morrison is coming from after the game either win or lose and it does not take me all night to realize the man knew what he was talking about.

Report finds troubles in Hoover (Ala.) program Forget the TV show Two-a-Days. There's a more intriguing script — the 68-page report about academic and athletic improprieties at Hoover (Ala.) High. It mentions grade changes for star athletes without a teacher's consent, a football coach with a second family and even spying. "This has all the makings of a miniseries," said Hoover city councilman Gene Smith. "You can't make this kind of stuff up." Concurs Earl Cooper, parent of a Hoover student: "It's a sinister situation made for television. I don't believe this is over yet. There are a few other dormant issues." REPORT: Results of Hoover investigation (PDF) Hoover is 5-1 this season and has been a consistent national power. It was No. 1 in USA TODAY's Super 25 preseason rankings last year. The Buccaneers have six state titles in football since 1993 and had won four in a row until last season, when they fell to Prattville in the title game. The school's football success led MTV to set Two-a-Days at Hoover, and the cable channel followed the team through the 2005 and '06 seasons. Most of the $151,000 report, done by retired federal judge Sam Pointer Jr., centers on administrators changing grades without a teacher's consent and pressuring teachers to improve football players' grades or give them special treatment. It also highlights the activities of coach Rush Propst. Many incidents involved efforts by Hoover assistant principal Carol Martin and counselor Terri Borie to help one player. Though not named in the report, he was identified as Kerry Murphy by The Birmingham News. He signed with the University of Alabama but did not qualify. The investigation also said the school needed greater control over Propst's outside income. In addition to a $93,000 salary — which he gets solely for coaching the team; he is not a teacher — he has used the school's facilities for free to operate his for-pay football camps. The report said Propst asked an assistant coach who was a teacher to change an athlete's grade from failed to incomplete. Propst and former principal Richard Bishop were chided for not promptly reporting two infractions to the Alabama High School Athletics Association. The first came when an assistant coach spied on a practice by rival Vestavia Hills and the other when two Hoover players were allowed to play in a junior varsity game although ineligible. The probe even delved into an allegation regarding Propst — that he had a second family, saying bank records showed he supported a family in Pell City, Ala., and that while the report had not fully explored the allegations, "from what we have learned from several reliable sources, we believe they are true." Since the investigation began in late June, Bishop was fired and athletics director Jerry Browning stepped down. "I am disappointed yet not surprised by the findings," Smith said. "I believe our board of education will use this as a tool to move quickly to reinstitute the integrity of our educational system."
