Bring on the Braggin' Rights... PA NEWS GAME OF THE WEEK: PN-G AT NEDERLAND By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Laid-back, down-home KYKR country music generally makes its way around the Port Neches-Groves fieldhouse. It can be heard there 24-7-365. Those relaxing country sounds have prevailed around The Reservation's football factory throughout the years of Matt Burnett's 14 head-coaching seasons at PN-G. Earlier this week at the start of an Indians practice, the country lyrics on PN-G's sound system went like this, "life goes faster than you think, don't blink." That's part of the concern which Matt's defense has on this 84th Mid-County Madness football night. When Larry Neumann's offense stretches the field all over the place and varies the tempo with no-huddle snaps and quick hitch routes, the Indians tacklers had better not blink. PN-G (3-2 and 2-0) fittingly would prefer more of a laid-back, down-home KYKR country pace than Nederland (5-0 and 2-0) will try to establish. The Indians will notice the difference in music over Bulldog Stadium's loud speakers even an hour before they take the field for tonight's 7 o'clock kickoff. Yet it's stretching the truth to suggest that the host Bulldogs own all the upper hands in this meeting when they seek their fourth straight win in the longest-running continuous Southeast Texas high school football rivalry. When Nederland's defense attempts to tackle Jake Hemmings and Josh Wright -- a powerful, new tandem of strong Indians runners -- it will be much harder for Chris Gutierrez and Dravannti Johnson to cope with them than with Shania Twain and Martina McBride... laid-back, down-home country music can be powerful, too. "They (Nederland's offense) are doing a great job of spreading the ball around and executing their quick game real well," Burnett said, with country music flowing in the background on Tuesday. "Their quarterback (Kirby Bellow) has matured a lot. He's getting better every game. He has a good arm and he's done a good job of running their offense." A self-assured, mild-mannered, southpaw sophomore, Bellow has accomplished what few sophomores ever could expect to do. Replacing injured senior Ryan Sampere late in the third quarter of the season opener, Bellow has led 22-4A passers in most completions (60), attempts (115), yards (738) and touchdowns (10). He’s done it with no previous varsity experience and no significant passing success in that emergency outing against Brenham, either. Always a superb defensive tactician, the Indians' chief Burnett picked up on the fact that Nederland's throwing game can dink a defense here and there, but it can bomb the opposition, too. With Asa Cardenas, Adam Broussard, Kyle Brady, Jude Vidrine, Reagan Stanley, Cameron Bass and Johnson among the receivers, Bellow can settle for short completions or go over the top. "They throw a lot of short and sideways passes but they have a deep pass off of it," Burnett said. "Cardenas has made a lot of big plays." A first-year varsity starter as a senior, Cardenas has leaped atop the 22-4A receiving and scoring charts. He has grabbed 28 receptions for 456 yards. With seven touchdown receptions and 42 points, Asa shares the league's scoring lead with PN-G's Hemmings and Lumberton's A.J. Dugat. Whether or not statistics lie, Nederland's offense has gained very close to the same average number of yards a game which PN-G's defense has allowed. Ranked third in total offense, the Bulldogs have averaged 294 yards a game. Ranked last in total defense, the Indians have allowed 287.4. That number does not deceive Nederland's Neumann one bit. He has a high respect level for the Indians' defense, especially ends Clint Burnett and Zeke Schexneider and linebacker Kaleb Walker.

No ticket sales planned tonight in Mid-County By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Barring a final day change in policy, there will be no ticket sales or standing-room only stadium sales to be conducted tonight, prior to the 7 o'clock kickoff at Bulldog Stadium between PN-G and Nederland. Nederland athletic secretary Charlotte Wallace said no tickets would be sold at the gate before, during or after Bulldog Stadium's gates will be open to the general public this evening at 5:30 p.m. "There will be no tickets sold at the gate," Wallace said. Wallace also indicated that no further ticket sales were planned during Friday's school day at Nederland High School. Port Neches-Groves ISD ticket manager Becky Romero said that approximately 200 tickets remained at the PNGISD administration office as of mid-afternoon on Thursday. Any remaining tickets will go on sale at the PNGISD administration office this morning from 8 a.m. until noon. "We will be open until noon or until we run out," Romero said.

Hamshire-Fannett faces tough defensive task against Silsbee AREA ROUNDUP The Port Arthur News SILSBEE — Hamshire-Fannett travels to District 21-3A frontrunner Silsbee in hopes of staying in the hunt for a state playoff spot. While Silsbee is averaging over 50 points a game in league play, the Tigers have beaten 21-3A opponents Orangefield (48-0) and Bridge City (55-7). Neither has won a game in 2007. Silsbee, 2-0 in district and 3-2 overall, is a tale of two teams. Early in the season, the Tigers ran the veer. But, after a series of turnovers, head coach Bobby McGallion junked his offense and installed an entirely different spreadoffense that utilizes SilsbeeÃs athletic ability more effectively. With 6-2, 180-pound sophomore quarterback Jeremy Johnson throwing (729 yards, 10 TDs) and running the ball (359 yards rushing), Silsbee looks for the big play. With running back Chris Castle and receivers Mike Willis and Donovan Harris, the Tigers can score in a hurry. Castle has 409 yards on the ground and a 9.1 rushing average. Receivers Willis (11 catches for 259 yards, three TDs) and Harris (9 for 255 yards, four scores) average an impressive 23.6 and 28.3 yards per reception, respectively. Hamshire-Fannett, which rolled over Hardin-Jefferson 35-6 last week, is 3-2, 1-1. Warren (2-4, 0-1) at East Chambers (5-0, 1-0) WINNIE — East Chambers seeks to keep its unbeaten streak alive tonight, hosting a slumping Warren Warrior team that has lost four straight games. After winning its opening two contests, Warren has dropped four straight to teams that have a combined 18-4 record on the year. “Operating out of a pro style of offense, they use the toss sweep and throw the ball about half the time," stated EC head coach Tony Valastro. “But I really think there is only one team that can stop us, and that’s our own self with turnovers.†Although turnovers haven’t been a problem for the Bucs, blue chip all-state safety Tramain Thomas, and cornerbacks Anthony Ortiz and Quentin Joseph lead Valastro’s talented defense that has yet to be scored upon in the first half in any of their five games. Thomas has four interceptions, 49 total tackles, five tackles for losses and one sack. While Thomas is one of Southeast Texasà finest in the secondary, he has also rushed for 596 yards (8.5 avg.) and 10 touchdowns. Junior Donte Raymond isn’t far behind with 527 yards on the ground and five scores.

Frost Ends Season Tonight Polar Bears to forfeit final four games By Tony Marquis Frost’s season comes to an abrupt end tonight. The Polar Bears play their unscheduled season finale against Evant, 7:30 at Polar Bear Field, forfeiting their final four games because of a lack of participation. According to Superintendent Jim Revill, the team will be down to nine players Friday, less than the 12 the UIL requires to play 11-man football. Revill said there were talks with Evant since last Friday about moving the Evant game up. Messages by the Daily Sun were left with Frost coach Jerry Baldridge’s wife Teri, but not returned. “I hate to hear that — they have a great tradition out there and they’re always producing great athletes,†said J.P. Gillen, the head coach at Wortham for four years. “It’s just unfortunate that they’re not going to finish the rest of the season. Coach Baldridge has always done a good job out there and they’re sort of in a numbers crunch right now — I wish them nothing but the best of luck.†The other alternative was to forfeit the game, because by Friday at 3:15 p.m., seven of the 16 remaining players will be held out due to grades. Of the 26 that started the season, some have injuries and about five, running back Ty Ritterbach said, have left the team. On Wednesday, Ritterbach was spray-painting his pants for Blue and White Day — the school’s rally for the football team. “It’s hard to explain,†said the sophomore of the team’s season-ending game Thursday. “I know for all the seniors, it’s really hurting them. We’ve put a lot of heart and soul into the team.†The future of the team isn’t clear, as far as what classification it will enter in 2008. Frost has to state its intent on playing 11- or six-man football by the end of October. “If we do it, it will be temporary,†said Revill of the switch to six-man football. “It’s something we’re going to have to look at. For the next four years we’re projected to have six-man numbers.†Revill said he will meet with the Frost ISD school board soon to discuss the team’s future. Ritterbach said that Baldridge was overcome with emotion delivering the news to the players in the Frost locker room Monday. “He apologized because we didn’t have a team,†Ritterbach said. “He’s upset that we can’t have a team, so he got a little angry at some of the kids. He started yelling. Then he told us to keep our heads up.†Revill has had close contact with Baldridge this week. “He’s as disappointed as I am,†Revill said. “It’s unfortunate. We’ve got really good kids, I can’t make people understand how good these kids are.†Ritterbach said the disappointment he’s feeling won’t stop him from trying for Frost’s first win and first points of the season. “Me personally, I want to go out there and show everybody that the Polar Bears still have some fight in them after this season,†he said. Elks coach Keith Stifflemire said he preferred to play the game instead of winning by forfeit. “At one point, we thought if we don’t move it we can get the win,†Stifflemire said. “At the same time, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do, if they beat us (tonight), the better team won.†Stifflemire said his team won’t take the Polar Bears (0-5, 0-2 in District 13-1A) lightly, despite the situation. Evant (3-3, 1-1 in 13-1A) allowed Covington to score its first touchdown, Friday, Sept. 30. “I don’t have any sympathy in playing them because they’re good enough to play us,†he said. “I feel bad for next week, I feel bad for the kids and the community. I’m sure they worked just as hard as we have.â€
