FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Lamar University men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action this Saturday, running at the 2007 NCAA South Central Regional Championships, at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark. The men's 10K race is set to go off at 10 a.m. with the women's 6K race schedule to begin at 11:15. The Lamar men enter the Regional meet on the heels of their second straight Southland Conference championship, while the women finished in second place. The Cardinal men are ranked fourth in the South Central Region behind the University of Arkansas, the University of Texas and Texas A&M. The Lady Cardinals, who finished in fourth place in 2005 and 2006, come in as the number seven team in the region. The top two teams and four individuals from each of the nine regional championships automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. On Sunday, 13 at-large teams will be added to the national championship field by the NCAA Division I Track and Field Committee. Two additional at-large individuals will round out the field of 255. The women are led by two time Southland Conference champion and two-time conference cross country athlete of the year in senior Clerc Koenck. Junior Renee Graham and freshman Rachel Kingsford bolster the top of the Lady Cardinal roster. The pair finished in second and 10th place at the Southland Conference meet. Graham was the top finisher for Lamar at the 2005 and 2006 South Central Regional meets, finishing in third place a year ago and in 15th place in 2005. She was the only member of the Lamar women's cross country team to advance to the NCAA Championship meet both of those seasons. The Lady Cardinals line up is completed by junior Stacey Monteau, sophomore Karesse Letherman and freshman Mercy Bungei. Monteau placed 17th at the SLC meet, Lethermon came in 23rd and Bungei placed 35th. On the men's side the Cardinals are led by sophomore Francis Kasagule, who placed second at the SLC meet, and has been one of the top runners in the region all season long. He is joined at the top of the Lamar pack by junior Samuel Kosgei who finished fourth at the SLC meet. Last season Kosgei grabbed a fourth place finish at the regional meet, with Kasagule close behind in fifth place. Both runners advanced to the NCAA Championships, where Kasagule earned All American honors. The Cardinals follow their top two with another pair of solid runners in Frank Bwambale and Danny Shaw. Bwambale, a junior, finished in seventh place at the SLC championship in a time while Shaw, a senior, finished his SLC career with a third straight all-conference performance by coming in 10th place. Freshman Drew Bean, who placed 14th at the SLC championship, rounds out the top five for Lamar, while sophomore Randy Becker, who came in 16th place two weeks ago, is close behind. Junior Ewan Simpson, who came in 28th place at the conference meet, rounds out the Lamar lineup for the regional meet.

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team will tip off the 2007-08 season on Saturday at 4 p.m., taking on the LSU-Shreveport Lady Pilots at the Montagne Center. The game is the beginning of a double header, as the Lamar men take on Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition game. The Lady Cardinals enter Saturday's game on the heels of a 99-62 win over the Houston Jaguars on Tuesday night. The game against Houston was the second of two exhibitions for LU. They dropped their first exhibition of the season 66-62 to the All Stars last Saturday. In their two exhibition games the Lady Cardinals split, losing 66-62 to the All Stars and winning 99-62 over the Houston Jaguars. Freshman Tamara Abalde led the way in both exhibitions for Lamar, scoring 17 points against the All Stars and 18 points against the Jaguars for a 17.5 points per game average. The Lady Pilots are led in scoring by Whitney Hollins and Edie Leonards, while Quan Joseph leads the way on the boards. After Saturday's game the Lady Cardinals will hit the road for their first big test of the season, taking on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at Gallagher-Iba Arena at 7 p.m. Monday night.

BEAUMONT - Lamar University, who is coming off a 92-75 exhibition win over Incarnate Word, hosts Central Oklahoma in its final tune-up before the start of the regular season Saturday at 7 p.m. in men's basketball exhibition action at the Montagne Center. Lamar and UCO met in exhibition action last season with the Cardinals posting a come-from-behind 74-63 win over the Bronchos. The Cardinals open their 57th season as a four-year institution Tuesday at 7 p.m. when LeTourneau University visits the Montagne Center. Junior Kenny Dawkins led four Cardinals in double-figures with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field, including 3 of 6 from three-point range in last Saturday's win over Incarnate Word. A 5-9 point guard from Holly Springs, Miss., Dawkins also grabbed six rebounds, dished out seven assists and had three steals. Senior Mathew Barrow chipped in 15 points of 5 of 8 shooting from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. Senior Currye Todd came off the bench to score 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Senior Darren Hopkins added 10 points. Lamar shot 44.7 percent from the field, 31 percent from 3-point range and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. The Cardinals outrebounded UIW 42 to 39, including grabbing 14 on the offensive glass which led to nine second chance points. Lamar enjoyed a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint and 24-17 in points off turnovers. UCO returns three starters and seven letterwinners from last year's 20-8 squad. The Bronchos were 9-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. UCO is coached by Terry Evans, who has an 89-56 record in five years at the helm. Evans played for Lamar Director of Athletics Billy Tubbs at Oklahoma. Senior Sam Belt is the Bronchos' leading returning scorer at 17.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg. He led the team with 67 3-pointers made and shot 44.6 percent from the field, 38.7 percent from 3-point range and 80.1 percent from the free throw line. The other two returning starters are senior guard Brian Walker and sophomore forward Keith Marks. Walker averaged 7.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Marks averaged 2.0 ppg and 2.2 rpg. As a team, UCO averaged 82.9 ppg last season and shot 47.6 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 67.2 percent from the free throw line.

District 21-5A • Clinched berths: Beaumont West Brook (6-0), Humble (5-1). • Still alive: Baytown Lee (3-3), Channelview (3-3), PA Memorial (3-3), Kingwood (3-3). • Eliminated: Atascocita (1-5), Baytown Sterling (0-6). • Notable: Humble is the top Div. I seed; Beaumont West Brook is the top Div. II seed. Baytown Lee is in with a win. Kingwood is in with a win. PA Memorial needs a win plus a Baytown Lee or Kingwood loss. Channelview can only get in if it ends up in a three-way tie with Baytown Lee and Port Arthur Memorial.

www.panews.com Memorial plans to reload around Brown, Buckner By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News If the The Memorial Titans reach their lofty goals, they are going to need seniors J'Covin Brown and Jacovin Buckner to mature into leaders this season. The Titans lost 11 seniors from last season's roster, and Memorial head coach Terrul Henderson said having so many seniors on last year's 29-6 (12-3 in District 21-5A) team made winning fairly easy. "We're going to have to fill the voids," Henderson said. "We have good young talent on this team, so we're going to need (Brown and Buckner) to lead that talent. Both of those guys had great seasons as juniors, but they are seniors now and they are going to have to work hard to mature as student athletes. "I think they are learning their new role and they are both working hard to become the players we need them to be in order for this team to be successful." Brown is a highly recruited 6-3 scoring guard. Hoopscoops.com has Brown listed as one of the top-recruits in the entire country. Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma and Cincinnati are the schools most interested in Brown's services. Brown averaged more than 26.2 points per game last season. He hit the 50-point mark once and had more than 30 points in 14 games last season. Buckner, a 6-foot guard, averaged 13 points per game. Senior Domonique Thomas, juniors Tevin Turner and JeKore Tyler and sophomores Shaquillie White, JaMarqus Jones, Darius Harris, Clarence Thomas and Wendell Piere fill out the rest of Memorial's varsity roster. "We have the talent to be a good team," Henderson said. "We're just going to have to work hard and take one game at a time. We have an extremely competetive non-district (Memorial finished as district runner up behind Kingwood last season) schedule and we have a competetive tournament season. "We have some tough games ahead of us and that will help us grow. There are a lot of variables that will have to come together so we'll just wait and see where we stand once district gets here." Memorial's first regular season game comes against Ozen at home on Tuesday. That game is set to start at 5 p.m. The Titans will play in the Central Tournament Nov. 29 through Dec. 1, the Holiday Classic in Lake Charles on Dec. 20-22 and the Gamble Classic Dec. 27-29. The Titans also have a game against Houston Yates at the Toyota Center in Houston on Dec. 8. That game is set to start at 1 p.m. Memorial's first district game is at home against Humble on Dec. 14. All district games are set for 7 p.m. Kingwood, West Brook, Humble, Channelview and Memorial should all challenge for playoff spots this season.
