Lady Cards ready for big tangle with China Springs Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — The first initial shock of reaching the Class 3A Region III Regional Tournament has worn off for the Bridge City Lady Cardinals. Now the Lady Cardinals are preparing to face the China Spring Lady Cougars at 8 p.m. tonight at Bryan High School in the regional semi-finals. Bridge City reached the regional tournament with a five-game victory over the Bellville Brahmanettes while China Spring took out Taylor in five. The Lady Cardinals (25-13) have been on a string of five-game victories dating back to when Bridge City downed Silsbee in a tiebreaker for first place in District 21-3A. In the area round it also took five games for the Lady Cardinals to oust La Grange. China Spring (34-5) defeated Fairfield in four games in the area round. This is the third straight trip to the regional tournament for the Lady Cougars. The Lady Cardinals were all business Thursday at practice and Coach Becca Mathews knows her team is ready to get into Bryan and get the game going. “They are so excited about everything,†Mathews said. “It is all they talk about. The girls have not asked a question about China Spring, they just want to play.†One of the main reasons of the excitment Mathews said is how well the Lady Cardinals are starting to play. “They get excited every match because they amaze themselves,†Mathews added. “We have went into matches not knowing we can do and then gaining confidences when we start to play. It is like they say ‘Let’s see what we can improve on today and who else we can shock.’†Freshman Marlee Lopez is thrilled to be making the regional tournament in just her first year on the varsity level. “It is awesome,†Lopez said. “It feels great to be in the regional tournament as a freshman. I really never thought we would go this far at the start of the seaosn. I love my teammates for this.†The teammates Lopez speaks of all start with seniors Audrey Myers, Kayla Fullerton and sisters Jenna and Lauren Angelle. Add in Sarah Armand, Mallory Guidry, Emily Kosh, Sam West and Amy Caillouet and the Lady Cardinals are full of playmakers. “I cannot guarantee a win but whoever we play — it will not be easy,†Mathews said. “They will have to play hard. Of course we want to go up there and win and at the same time it is easier to live with yourself if you play your hardest and lose. “I’m always so proud of this team. I really don’t think I can find any more room in me to be more proud.†Lopez is just as proud as her coach is and is ready to take on the Lady Cougars. “I am expecting us to get up there and win,†Lopez said. “These last two games were so exciting. Bellville was the most exciting game I have ever been in. Now we are going to go to Bryan and play our hardest and see what happens.†The winner of tonight’s game will face the winner of Hutto and Columbus at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryan High School.

UNT's Dodge, staff cleared of racial bias By TROY PHILLIPS Star-Telegram Staff Writer North Texas officials released late Wednesday their findings of an investigation into allegations of racial bias against head football coach Todd Dodge and members of his coaching staff. UNT found that two suspended players and one former player -- all of whom filed a joint complaint last week with the Texas NAACP -- were not victims of inequitable treatment based on race or any other reason. Dodge, who couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday, said Tuesday the matter was closed as far as he was concerned. "I've talked to my team and let them know what I thought," Dodge said. "It was important they know how it made me and my coaching staff feel. We won't talk about it anymore." In a statement released by the university, UNT President Gretchen M. Bataille said Dodge and his staff "continue to have my unwavering support." "The university took the students' allegations seriously, and immediately launched an investigation that now has been completed," Bataille said. "The investigation revealed no discriminatory behavior, nor any pattern of racial bias in the decision-making and communication of the UNT football coaching staff, nor any within the football program as a whole." Bataille went on to say, "The investigation also concluded that one of the football players was suspended not for the use of his speech or slang, but rather for behaviors that violated the conduct expected of team players." One of the players bringing the complaint, cornerback Desmon Chatman, was suspended more than a month ago by Dodge for missing a workout. Chatman, who was interviewed as part of the investigation but did not submit a written statement to the university, claimed initially his punishment didn't fit the crime. According to UNT's findings, Chatman was suspended for "missing the practice and misrepresenting his whereabouts during the practice session." Cornerback Dominique Green, who first notified the NAACP, a newspaper and several television stations, was suspended Oct. 28 after refusing to stop using profanity after being taken out of game the night before against Middle Tennessee, Dodge said. Green claimed that his use of the word "hood" -- slang for a neighborhood -- prompted his suspension after assistant coach Clayton George disapproved of the word. Dodge and George said Green's "insubordination and the accumulated instances of poor attitude" were the reasons for Green's suspension. It was the second strike for Green this season, who didn't play in UNT's first two games for disciplinary reasons. Not long after returning, he was elevated from a backup to a starting position. Former player Gary Oubre, another cornerback, joined the complaint late last week. NAACP officials postponed two campus visits with the three players last Thursday and Monday. Teen accused of leaving dead cow at Wichita Falls school arrested 03:01 PM CST on Thursday, November 8, 2007 Associated Press WICHITA FALLS, Texas - A 16-year-old boy accused of leaving a calf carcass at Wichita Falls High School faces two misdemeanor charges in an incident initially suspected of stemming from school rivalry. The teen, whose identity will not be released because of his age, was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief, police Sgt. Joe Snyder said. After the dead calf was left at the campus the evening of Nov. 1, many thought it stemmed from the school's rivalry with Rider High School, which is to play at Wichita Falls High on Friday. But police dismissed that theory after learning that the boy is not a student in the Wichita Falls Independent School District, Snyder said. Investigators found the animal's owner, who told them that the cow had been in failing health and that it had been humanely destroyed because of its condition, Snyder said. Detectives later learned the identity of the suspect, who told them he had entered the school property intending to commit the offense, Snyder said. The boy knows the cow's owner, police said, but it's unclear why the teen took the dead animal to the school. No one else faces charges in connection to the incident, police said.

Rockets once again rocking the house Toyota Center sellouts becoming rule, not exception Justice & McClain on Rockets, Yao Rock bottom hit years later, but it all turned on an opening night with the Milwaukee Bucks in Houston. The Rockets had been rolling along, selling out 176 consecutive home games, including all 25 dates during an NBA lockout season that saw fans around the country turn away. The streak was the third-longest in the NBA, behind only the Michael Jordan-fueled popularity of the Chicago Bulls and the traditional success of the New York Knicks. Then the Bucks arrived in Houston to open the 1999-2000 season. The Rockets failed to sell out their opener, lost an arena referendum that night to build Toyota Center and fell to last in the NBA in attendance, remaining among the bottom five teams for most of the next four seasons. When the Bucks arrive Friday for the first NBA meeting of Chinese national team teammates Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian, the Rockets will play before their third consecutive capacity home crowd to begin the season. But more than the result of the matchup between the current star from China and a player expected to become one, it will represent a huge and somewhat unexpected rebound in the Rockets' ticket sales. The season before the Rockets drafted Yao, attendance slipped to an average of 11,737, last in the NBA. This season, the Rockets project sellouts of every game until mid-January. "It's our hope that, looking at the schedule between now and the end of the year, we will get every game sold out. I expect it," Rockets CEO Tad Brown said. Targeting 30 sellouts The home opener against the Portland Trail Blazers drew 18,232, the second-largest opening-night crowd in team history. (Toyota Center capacity varies based on the config-uration of some suites and attendance in the restaurant.) Including the final three regular-season games of last season, the four home playoff games and the two games at home this season, the Rockets' streak of nine sellouts is their longest since they moved into Toyota Center for the 2003-04 season. A year ago, when owner Leslie Alexander announced a goal to sell out 20 games, he inspired scoffs from most in the room and distress from those expected to hit that number. The Rockets sold out 25 games. This season, Brown aimed for 30, but with sales picking up, he said he would have to revise that goal. "I want to sell out all the games, obviously," Brown said. "But with the projections I was working on with my staff, I wanted to sell out 30 games. "If we sell out the first 13, I think we push the goal to 35. This is a basketball town. They love the Rockets, but they want to see performance. If this team goes on a roll early, I think we can sell out them all." Streak in jeopardy If the Rockets sell out all 13 November and December home games — the Dec. 5 game against Memphis is considered the most likely threat to the streak — they easily will surpass the eight-game regular-season streak that had been their longest in Toyota Center. In the NBA, the measures of thriving ticket sales are a 90 percent or better retention rate of season-ticket customers and more than 10,000 full-season ticket packages (or partial plans adding up to 10,000 full packages). The Rockets have surpassed the 90 percent retention rate, falling just short of the 10,000 full-season packages. (Brown won't give exact figures.) In the past three seasons, the Rockets' renewal rates have increased by almost 10 percent, growth particularly unexpected because customer loyalty is often driven by postseason success. "You combine the excite-ment about the moves made with the hope of winning and expectation of winning and then the great early play that our team has shown on court, and it's leading into a really good period for us," Brown said. "We're almost there. We're at three times the number of (new) full-season ticket sales than we've had in the last five seasons in Toyota Center. A lot has to do with the changes that were made in the offseason." The Rockets remain far from the heights of their post-championship years. But as they look at the season's first two months, they see themselves much closer to those heady times than to the lean years.
