Second Baptist captures TAPPS 5A title FORT WORTH — For the second time in five years, the Second Baptist Eagles have won the TAPPS 5A state volleyball championship. The Eagles defeated Denton Liberty Christian 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21 on Saturday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. "This was a really sweet victory because we weren't supposed to be the team that won this year," Second Baptist coach Sue Berg said. "We didn't even win our district." The loss to Fort Bend Baptist in the district tournament might have been the best thing for the Eagles, though. "It was a wake-up call and we made a lot of improvements," Berg said. The Eagles also won the state championship in 2003 over Lutheran South. That year, Second Baptist was the favorite. "This year is a little sweeter because we had to work so hard for it," Berg said. Alvin Living Stones beat Ennis St. John in four games (25-12, 21-25, 25-12, 25-16) to claim the TAPPS 1A state crown. Conroe Covenant lost to Bulverde Bracken Christian in four games (25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 25-13) in the TAPPS 2A final match. [email protected]

Memorial vs. Humble Updates/Humble Wins/Kingwood Is In!

Humble sends Memorial packing By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News HUMBLE -- Memorial's playoff hopes were still alive going into Saturday night's game with Humble. Just beat the Wildcats for the second year in a row -- that's it. That's all the Titans had to do to advance into the Class 5A playoffs. Port Arthur's biggest problem was Humble, however. The Wildcats offense moved the ball for 397 yards, accumulating 18 first downs and scoring at will. Humble's defense allowed the Titans just 150 offensive yards and just five first downs, including zero in the first half. When the dust settled, the Wildcats owned a 39-17 victory at Turner Field and improved their record to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in District 21-5A. With the loss, Memorial drops to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in district play. "Humble was very physical," said Titans head coach Ronnie Thompson. "They were extremely ready. They dominated both sides of the line and really put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. We couldn't move the ball in the first half offensively and that set the tempo. When we finally got something going in the second half, it was way too late. "It wasn't one of our better nights. They had a good team and I wish them luck." After Solomon Jones ran back a 69-yard kick return for a touchdown, Memorial held a 7-6 lead for nearly nine minutes of the game and into the second quarter. The Titans defense stopped Humble on its following two possesions, forcing the Wildcats to turn the ball over once by way of fumble and then Humble had to punt on its second possesion. Memorial had its opportunities early but could not move the ball. Then, five seconds into the second quarter, Humble's Jarret Malone scored his second of three touchdowns when he punched in a 5-yard run. That score put the Wildcats up 12-7 and their lead was never in jeopardy from there. On Humble's next drive, Malone scored on a 62-yard run that went right through the heart of the Titans defense. That score put Humble up 18-7. Malone finished the night with 199 yards on 20 carries and probably could have run for 200 more. Then the Wildcats got its passing game in the scoring action. -
Lee cruises past Southwest Miss. By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published November 11, 2007 It’s not Region XIV competition, but it is an undefeated start. Lee College improved to 4-0 Saturday in a 99-84 win over Southwest Mississippi Community College. Pre-season All-American Dominique Keller turned in a dominating performance with 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead an offensive explosion that saw six different Rebels reach double figures in the scoring column. “This is not Region 14,†Lee College head coach Roy Champagne said. “The proof will be in the pudding in Region 14. There is a different brand of basketball that our conference plays and that is why it is the best conference in the nation. “The only thing that we have going for us right now is our chemistry. Our practices haven’t been as good as we would like them to be this week but the guys came ready to play tonight.†The Rebels came in with a height advantage, which suited Keller just fine as he dominated in the paint with the 30 points on 14 of 22 shooting. The sophomore added had four blocks on the night to go along with the game-high 16 rebounds. The game was an up-tempo affair as both teams worked the ball quickly down the floor in transition. At the end of the first half, Lee College held a 52-34 lead and kept the deficit near the 20-point mark for most of the game. Freshman C.J. Busby of Kountze added 15 points on six of eight shooting and converted three of his four three-point attempts. Sophomore transfer Terrence Littlefield scored 12 points on four of five shooting in 16 minutes of work. St. Paul Latham, Freddie Haynes and Hollis Giles each added 10 points. Haynes led the team in assists with six and Giles gathered in 10 rebounds. As a team, the Rebels shot 41 of 74 from the field. Lee College will return to action on Saturday when it visits Lamar State-Port Arthur.

Lamar volleyball wins, secures No. 1 seed in Southland Conference tournament BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team claimed a share of the Southland Conference championship Saturday with a 34-32, 30-17, 30-16 victory over Texas-San Antonio before 475 fans at McDonald Gym. The Lady Cardinals end the regular season 24-8 overall and 15-1 in the SLC. Lamar shares the regular season title with Stephen F. Austin, which beat Texas State 3-0 on Saturday to also move to 15-1 in league play. By virtue of its 3-2 win over SFA earlier this season, Lamar will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's SLC Tournament in San Antonio. The Lady Cardinals' last SLC title came in 2001. Lamar hasn't played in the NCAA Tournament since 1993. A berth in this year's NCAA Tournament will be on the line in San Antonio. Molli Abel led the Lady Cardinal attack against UTSA, hitting .381 with 10 kills. Adrianna Meengs had 32 assists and six kills. Meagan Adams hit a team best .353, with seven kills and 11 digs. The Roadrunners gave Lamar a scare in Game 1, hitting .259 to force the Lady Cardinals to hang on for a 34-32 victory. But the Lady Cardinals improved their defense in Games 2 and 3, forcing UTSA into a .026 hitting percentage in the final game. -
