STILLWATER, Okla. - The Lamar University women's basketball team will get their first road test of the 2007-08 season on Monday in Stillwater, Okla., taking on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at 7 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Lady Cardinals enter Monday's game with a 1-0 record, on the heels of an 86-52 win over LSU-Shreveport on Saturday in their season opener. In their triumph over the Lady Pilots, Lamar was led by freshman Tamara Abalde who posted a double-double in her first game as a Division I basketball player, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Senior Aida Bakhos was also key in LU's victory with a double-double of her own, posting a career-high 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Brittney Williams and junior newcomer Nikki Williams each registered 15 points and five rebounds for Lamar. Oklahoma State enters the game with a 1-0 record, after an 89-49 win over Air Force on Friday. This game is the second of a four-game home stand to open the season for OSU. Freshman Kristin Hernandez led the way for the Cowgirls with 25 points, while Andrea Riley added 19 points. Also scoring in double figures for OSU was Maria Cordero and Danielle Green who had 19 and 11 points respectively. The Lady Cards and Oklahoma State have met on four previous occasions, with the Cowgirls winning all four times. The two teams first met during the 1973-74 season at the AIAW Regional Tournament with the Cowgirls posting a 68-51 win. Each of the past three meetings has taken place in Stillwater, with the most recent matchup being a 68-49 OSU win on Nov. 19, 1999. After Monday's game the Lady Cardinals will continue their three-game road stretch with a Thursday night showdown against the University of Texas. Lamar will face the Longhorns at 7:00 at the Frank Irwin Center.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 11, 2007 Seahawks travel to Carthage for Monday game vs. Panola College The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men's basketball team will be in Carthage on Monday for a 7 p.m. game against another Division I team from Region XIV, the Panola College Ponies. Lamar State (3-2), a Division III school, got its first-ever victory over a Region XIV team this past Saturday, when the Seahawks posted a 78-72 overtime win against Angelina College at the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur. Four LSC-PA players hit in double figures, with Vidor-ex freshman forward George Williamson leading the way with 24 points and nine rebounds Sophomore guard Noah Cole, another ex-Pirate, added 16. Freshman forwards Seth Harley and Sam Stelly each had 10 points for the Seahawks. Lamar State coach Don Bryson is pleased with his team's performance. "We've got a bunch of kids who are working hard and they're getting better defensively," he said. "Everybody is contributing and we're getting more inside scoring, which we didn't have in past years." The Seahawks are 0-4 against Panola since their first meeting in 2004. That record includes Lamar State's worst defeat, a 102-39 shellacking in Carthage in 2005. The Ponies (2-0) finished last in Region XIV in 2007, going 11-19 overall and 3-19 in conference play. The Seahawks take on another Division I team on Wednesday, when they travel to Pasadena to play San Jacinto College. Lamar State returns to the Carl Parker Center for Homecoming Night on Saturday, Nov. 17, for a rematch with Lee College, which beat the Seahawks 95-74 on Nov. 3.

Italian soccer game postponed after police kill fan ROME -- A police officer accidentally shot a soccer fan to death Sunday while trying to break up a fight at a highway rest stop in Tuscany between supporters of rival teams, authorities said. Arezzo Police Chief Vincenzo Giacobbe said a "tragic error" occurred when the officer tried to intervene in a scuffle between two groups of people. The victim was identified as Gabriele Sandri, 26, a DJ from Rome and a fan of the Rome soccer team Lazio who had been traveling to the northern city of Milan for Lazio's game against rival Inter Milan. He was fatally shot at the rest stop near Arezzo, about 125 miles north of Rome, police spokesman Saverio Cialdea said. "I express deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the family of the victim," Giacobbe said. Prime Minister Romano Prodi, attending Mass when he was informed by Italy's interior minister about the death, called the fan violence "very worrisome." The Italian soccer federation postponed the Inter-Lazio game to a date to be determined. Sunday's other games were to start 10 minutes late, with players and referees wearing black armbands. Sky TG24 TV quoted witnesses as saying the other group comprised fans of the Turin team Juventus who were traveling in two vans from Naples to Parma for the Parma-Juventus match. Clashes between rival fans at rest stops are common in Italy. The shooting near Arezzo prompted clashes between fans and police in Bergamo, where AC Milan was playing Atalanta. The match was stopped after seven minutes when Atalanta fans tried to break through a barrier and storm the field. Last season, a policeman was killed in riots following a game between Palermo and Catania in Sicily. Under new anti-violence measures this season, some fans have been barred from traveling to games. In 2004, a game between two teams -- Roma and Lazio -- was suspended three minutes into the second half when a false rumor that police had killed a boy outside sparked riots.
