  1. No. 4 Ozen holds off LC-M, 54-45 Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Beaumont Ozen may have dropped two games in the YMBL Tournament last weekend, and they slipped from No. 1 to No. 4 in the latest Class 4A Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ state poll, but the Panthers proved, still, that they are the beasts of District 22-4A. The Panthers broke away from Little Cypress-Mauriceville with a 13-2 run in the third quarter as the Panthers dispatched the Bears 54-45 at The Bear Cave Friday night in the 22-4A opener for both squads. The Bears (10-4, 0-1) fought hard to stay close in the first half and guard Brandon Richard got LC-M to within 24-20 by nailing a three-point bomb just before the first-half horn sounded. However, the Panthers (11-2, 1-0) turned up the defensive heat in the third period, forcing LC-M into seven turnovers and also used a balanced scoring attack to thwart the upset-minded Bears. The Panthers led 37-22 going into the fourth period. LC-M senior Dallas Bean, who finished with a game-high 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds, scored the Bears’ only points of the third period with a nice baseline drive with 2:45 left in the quarter. Ozen forward Jacoby Jones scored six of his 10 points in the third period to spark the run. Led by Bean, LC-M whittled down the Ozen lead late in the fourth. A rebound and putback by Bean drew the Bears to within 40-33 with 2:47 left in the game. However, Ozen was able to cash in on a couple steals and breakaway layups to seal the contest. Forward Decarlos rank paced the Panthers with 11 points, tallying six of them in the fourth period. Guard Breon Johnson added 10 points for the Panthers while post Willie Jefferson contributed nine points and seven boards. The Panthers finished with a slim 33-32 rebounding edge. Senior forward Justin Kinsley had eight points and six rebounds for the Bears. Senior forward Kevin Cooper scored six points and grabbed six boards while senior post David Sicktich had six points and five rebounds, all of it coming in the fourth period. The Bears committed 18 turnovers while the Panthers had 14. Ozen went 12-of-22 from the free-throw while the Bears continued their struggle from the charity stripe, going just 6-of-16. The Bears will continue 22-4A play Tuesday when they play host to Dayton and will host the Buna Cougars in a non-district tilt next Friday. In other District 22-4A action Friday night, the Nederland Bulldogs turned back Port Neches-Groves 58-53 while Beaumont Central defeated Lumberton 50-39.
