  1. Yes, I've been to many games in Vidor.  Vidor does have great fan support as well. But Vidor is in Orange County and I would guess that people in Vidor buy the Orange Leader and not the Port Arthur News.  As for KFDM if it is such a horrific thing that they report on PNG then take it up with them.  PNG fans do not hold some imaginary power over the local media to keep them from reporting on Beaumont schools.

  2. Have any of you stopped to think that this "media bias" could be based on the fact that there aren't many schools in Texas with the kind of fan base following that PNG has?  Not only is that rare, but that this large fan base also buys newspapers and advertises with the local stations. Yes, the PA News does a weekly feature on a PNG player, but they also do one on Nederland.  Two of their big distribution areas.  It just makes sense that they would cover these schools.  That is just a good business practice.  It's not like PNG goes out and forces the media to cover our teams.

This was a down year for PNG varsity, but the underclassmen teams had successful seasons.  We won't let down our pride in our school and our students.

  3. It seems to me the one part of this fiasco that has yet to be addressed is the officiating crew who basically refused to officiate last night.  Had The refs done their job during the game I feel this situation wouldn't have gotten out of hand.  You had one team who has nothing but a frustrating season and another team who wanted to come in and leave with not only a win, but a crushing defeat of their opponent to give them "steam" to go into the playoffs.  The steam comment comes from the coaches comment to the pa news.  Throughout the game the refs rarely threw flags and when Central fumbled the ball the refs just stood around the pile of players fighting for the ball and just waited to see what was going to happen.  This is just my opinion, but I think the players knowing the refs weren't going to do anything ignited a tenuous situation.  It was a very embarrassing way to end the season for PNG and equally embarrassing for Central to start their playoffs.

As for the comments about PNG arrogance, we love our school, our kids and the Pride we have in them.  Sometimes to the rest of the community views it as arrogance, but as in all situations we shouldn't make judgements about people from the way they look or carry themselves, but instead taking the time to get to know them and then judge them on their own merit.  Every fan base has arrogant and idiotic fans who bring nothing but embarrassment to their team.  Thankfully, they are the exception and not the rule.

Good luck to all the 4A playoff teams, I'm sure the purple faithful will be out there supporting our local teams.

  4. First of all let me say congratulations to the pirates on their win last night.  You played a great game.

That said I hate that after the game some of your fans took away from the win by their behavior.  Walking out of the stadium with my kids who were clearly decked out in our purple and white we had some high school age kids run up and start saying "who won the game?" I was okay with the high school kids doing it, but when adults are screaming at you from their car it's ridiculous.  Not sure if this "who won the game" question is a new fad, but it takes a hard fought good win for the Pirates and turns it into an example of really poor sportsmanship.  I know this is not indicitive of all Pirate fans, but come on adults yelling at an eleven year old out of a car?  Come on Pirate fans honor your team by showing the area you can win and still be good sports about it.

On a side note, I absolutely loved the Vidor mom Thursday night who was yelling cheers walking out of Pirate Stadium after their freshman team had lost.  Her pride in those boys was so evident and from one football mom to another I thought it was great.

  5. IMO if you have a child who plays sports or really any other extra-curricular activity you know that come the first Monday in August practices will start.  Scheduling a vacation during practice time is no excuse.  I agree that it speaks volumes about not only the student's committment to the team, but also the parent's committment to helping their child fulfill thier own dreams.  Practice schedules go out at the end of the school year so there really is no good excuse for missing practice for a vacation.  ::)

  6. Just my opinion, but there are so many facets to the PNG vs. Nederland rivalry that make it the best rivalry.  It's the two towns divided by the railroad track.  It's families made up of alumni from both schools.  It's schools filled with teachers who graduated from one district and now teach for the other, but who's blood stays true to their alma matter. We're related, we go to church together, we start the rivalry early in junior league football, baseball and basketball.  Both districts are places where on any given Friday you can witness a sea of school colors on all the school campuses. Not to mention all the hype we build the week of MCM.  I've been known to "decorate" someones house in purple in white only to find my own home "decorated" in black and gold.  It's knowing the players, cheerleaders, mascots, band members and drill team members on both sides.  We're friends until the game starts and friends once again when it ends.  It's a game where nothing is held back and both teams strive to be victorious.  Then when the scoreboard ticks off the final second and the teams go out to shake hands, it's not only handshakes, but hugs and being thrilled to be the winner, yet consoling an opposing team player who is a very close friend.  It's our off field relationships that make MCM the best rivalry around!
