Another point...if you know anyone who has played D1 football, they would tell you that it is work, a job that takes all of their time and energy. It is not easy but you're right, talent gets the doors opening and determination throughout the process helps you walk through those doors.
D1 schools don't put too much effort in students who are lack luster simply because there are dozens of equally talented, other players (who are good students) who want those scholarships. You are not doing the college a favor by playing on their team, rather it's the reverse and you know that there is a number on your jersey, one of many and replaceable.
-
The goal to win district championships, beat your rival and have a winning season, go to playoffs, teach young men self respect and how to be team players (this will go with them the rest of their lives), means nothing to some on this board; however, there is another board in Nederland that cares about this and, well maybe not so much in other school districts. The coaches in Nederland would give any player fair input and support them in reaching their personal goals, whatever that may be.
If you are looking for a wart on an ant, you will find it.

Who's been pitching for Ned?
-
Are you saying Neumann is not doing a good job because he's not there with you?????
-
HS Coaches do give input about a player IF college is interested but that is a fraction of what is considered in evaluating a potential college player. Colleges have too much at risk not do a full evaluation on a player. Bubba's word is not enough.
HS football is about developing the kid into a man. Many players in college play a different position than they did in high school just because of the ability, size, speed of the athlete. Ozen has faster, stronger, bigger players than Nederland, sad to say that they don't win more in hs because they have the tools. IF you have 5'9" players whipping up on some big guys, then yes, Nederland is more successful.

Not the biggest Romo fan but hey, I'd take him over any of the qbs on the market, it would be an improvement for the Texans.

Hard to compare subvarsity teams as indicators. Talent is so spread out on subvarsity and some players don't find their position to holes are filled on varsity. There is a rise in talent in PNG, it will be interesting how everything comes together. Lumberton doesn't seem to have the coaching and has lack of confidence on the field. Ozen is one good coach away from winning big and Central should be at the top of the food chain with Foreman 2. Neumann IV(don't you think of Jerry Seinfield yelling "Neaumann" is what the other coaches have been doing the past several years after games). GCM is no slouch and Lee is unpredictable. Don't forget Vidor.

I don't think that is it at all. Rather, it's not the responsibility of a coach or teacher to make sure my child has a college education or scholarship. That is on me and my child.
I do think it VERY important that a high school coach teach my child to be a team player, work hard, have respect, have school pride and work toward a goal in whatever sport and those things do lead to winning. I DON'T think a teacher has the responsibility to get my child an academic scholarship either.
Nothing in life is free that's worthwhile, and if you ask anyone who has received an athletic/academic scholarship, it takes work to keep it. (But not everyone has the ability or potential to get an athletic scholarship). So if they have those tools and work ethics that the coaches helped developed (let's hope I did my part, too), then they should be able to maintain those scholarships and complete their education.
-
Coug14 so if student doesn't get Pell grant (which is a considerable amt above room/board, tuition/fees), then what do they send home for the lights, scholarship money??? Hmm.
MF, I can't think of any fb player at Nederland in the past 20 years who was slighted for a chance at a football scholarship, can you?
-
Coug 14, everyone can go to college, play sports at college-no. Financial Aid is available and yes you have to pay back loans (grants are out there too),but if you get your education and job, you will be fine.
There are no "free" tickets in life. Not in recruiting, not in college, not in life. And you have to do the work.
-
Well said. Sadly, most don't realize the "truth" of this. If I would have told my dad that my coaches should do this or that for me, he would have straightened me out and told me that I needed to respect my coaches and work hard. Respect is missing and so is a good dose of reality these days.

If coaches starting putting names "out there" for average players whose full potential was achieved in hs, the coach will need to call colleges for the entire roster (because parents will mad that their son didn't get "the same opportunity"), that's no joke, Jack. Because parents have unrealistic expectations for their son. Focus on academics.
-
No offense but do you think building those contacts in college is a stepping stone for the coach to move to college coaching someday?
-
Size and POTENTIAL matter, you can put weight on player but you can't stretch him to 6'5" (Ned might have a 6'5" player in Carr). Austin LED the state in rushing. Good points. But those players did go to camps and get their names out there early.
Average size players with heart and desire, go early and go often. Don't bash your coaches either because they do answer to recruiting on your attitude and work ethic.

Nederland's commitment to excellence, both on the field and classroom is unquestionable. Teaching kids, after all is their job.
College is the parent's job. Sometimes a student's job.
Do you think teachers in the classroom should be "rewarding" scholarships for students? Teachers will do everything ONCE a student brings information to them and ask for reference or whatever but the student must be the one initiating it.
Once again take your son to recruiting events.
-
It's a shame for the players with no consistency of programs, leadership. It seems that they have the talent just no direction.
-
HS Coaches don't "reward" players with scholarships. College recruiting/coaches do.
Yes, a HS coach's job is to win high school games, teach and all of that other stuff I mentioned (along with teaching respect and hard work, being a team player and much more).
The HS coaches ONLY job when it comes to a player's recruiting is to give fair answers to questions asked about the player when/IF college personnel inquires.
Recruiting is the parent's responsibility. The player should work hard for their team and if he is talented and has POTENTIAL, the offers will come. Education is the most important thing for the player. Good luck with your endeavors.
-
HS Coaches jobs are to win, win, win. Win District Championships, go undefeated, beat their rivals, go deep into playoffs, etc, etc. This is a full time, year round job including off season work. A lot of coaches also teach, volunteer in after school activities and much more.
Recruiting is a maze of work for the parents. If you want your son to get recruited, make as many events you can afford. It is eye opening when you get to events and measure up (or not). A player might be outstanding in his respective district but once POTENTIAL, ability, academics, size, speed is assessed, you might not rank as high as you thought. If you want a D1 scholarship, it is a full time job and your hs career has little to do with it, rather how you measure up with comparable athletes. You want a good relationship with hs coach so when you do get interest from colleges, your work ethic and attitude is positive. Stay off twitter and other social media that could reflect negatively on you. Word to the wise, it's better to focus on academic scholarships, in the end, most will find that will lead to success long term.
-
Newton and Tatum will be a good game. Hope it's in Newton.
-
Get your kid to recruiting events unless your kid is 6'5" and amazing, in that case, they will find you. And get them to the events as early as 8th grade otherwise, youre late.

One thing you can say for Nederland is that Neumann makes decisions period. He develops team players and they work for the team. That is how Larry got through lean years by building a team mind set, not individuals. This year's team was another fine example of that. Can't see parents dictating to coach who plays where, there are just too many other Billy's ready to step up.
Regarding PNG, Walker has not done anything to lose the starting job. In the Nederland/PNG game, he was impressive. Sometimes, your opportunity might not come when you want, but if you work hard and sacrifice for the team, then you will be a true winner no matter what.
22 5A will be exciting, GCM in the mix could be interesting and if Ozen can get it together with the talent they have (and no Neumann is not available).
-
A general statement regarding teams always at the top of their district...The talent pool will come and go but the commitment by community, youth sports, schools. teams, coaches is hard to erase. Yes, their will be a dip in talent at any time but schools like PNG, NED, BC, LCM (just to name a few) keep winning and are competitive most year and year out in baseball. It is a reflection of what is put into the little leagues, youth baseball and summer ball. Larger schools with top heavy varsity rosters (with players who will graduate) have younger players, who at other schools may have started earlier on varsity. Look at current 5A schools and their rosters, very few underclassman bust the varsity roster but when under sound coaching and community support excel. No disrespect for Lumberton but the winning tradition is not there, baseball is not the only sport in which they don't have the lower level support that perhaps other cities in our area do. Senior Babe Ruth is in Nederland just for example and that says a lot about the community support for baseball.

That's something the grandson will never forget. What a nice event.

To understand fully the recruiting process in today's society has changed dramatically just in the past few years, what you do on the field of play is a small fraction of what is considered in your collegiate evaluation. Potential, athletic ability, drills & thrills at combines/camps are what gets coaches excited about a player who they may be recruiting. Today, Your twitter account is always asked for on questionnaires, just to show how much more the person/athlete is considered rather than their high school achievements. You can be all-district this and that and not be a player who is considered to be collegiate athletic material. Does not mean that your were not outstanding at the high school level.
The coaches in Nederland do all they can for the athlete in any sport, all that they can for their community, all that they can for teaching young boys how to become men, and have given our athletic program excellence from top to bottom. In my opinion, it is unfair to hammer them. Sometimes realistic expectations are the best to understand what your goal is at the next level.
