1.
South Alabama head coach Joey Jones on Lamar: On Lamar: “They are a much-improved ball team. They won 58-0 last week, and they have everyone back on their team. They brought in some really good players on their offensive line, and shored up some things. They’re trying to run the football more. You can tell they have really spent some time on their running game. I thought one of the negatives last year was they were really good throwing the football but didn’t run it as well. I think they knew that, and they have really developed their running game. They will be a much more balanced team offensively. And defensively, they are more athletic especially inside. They have some defensive tackles who are very good football players. They played us really well last year. I thought we had a good day offensively, but we didn’t score much. We need to be able to punch the ball in the end zone more [this year], and our kids are fully aware of that.” On preparing for an experienced team like Lamar: “We really don’t change anything about how we prepare other than we look at our opponent week-to-week. Our kids realize that they [Lamar] will be a much-improved football team. From year one to year two, we became a much better football team and likewise with them. I think they have had our game circled, and our kids realize that as well.” [Hidden Content]
Coaches speak.  USA by 21 points!
 2.
True enough.  And I wasn't expecting to see LU at the top of these predictions, or in the top half for that matter.  But I see Lamar program, albeit a young one, as a bit better than an 8th place team in this conference.
Gotta prove it on the field.
 3.
Art Briles only spent a couple of season at Tech before he worked miracles at Houston.  Guess in those two years he became that much smarter.  I can tell you from conversations with him he didn't.
Was he the defensive coordinator at Tech?  Don't think he was.  I'm just saying that these HS Coaches come from programs where they deal with kids from one particular program.  College sports (football) is different.  Your dealing with inner city kids, kids from affluent families, working class familites, and everything in between.  A college coach has to almost be a parent away from home for these college youngsters.  To me, it takes a few years for a new coach to learn to deal with the social issues as much as the X's and O's.  Mendoza was a defensive coordinator, not a position coach. And for the record, Todd Dodge was as fine a person as you could want to head up your program and represent your university.  A very fine person that could do well after a few years as an assistant at Pitt, or HC at a D1A or DII program. And you could be right, McGallion and his co-defensive partner could do a masterful job at Lamar.  I just think there were better options out there.  Like, a defensive coordinator with some college skins on the wall.
 4. And this guy probably forgot more about the game than I'll ever know.  He was a complete disaster at North Texas. Going from coaching HS athletes is totally different than coaching at the higher levels of college football.  Just saying.... Defensive Coordinator
 5. HS coaches moving up to an FCS or FBS assistants position is a bad deal.  Trust me, I know.  UNT's experiment not only failed with Todd Dodge, but specifically the Defensive Coordinator came up from Southlake Carroll, and was a complete disaster. Just saying, be careful Lamar.
 6. Has he had any college football coaching experience?
 7. Can't verify this yet, but I'm hearing that Brandon Peters (Western Kentucky) is enrolling at Lamar State-Port Arthur. Sorry, this was already posted earlier.  Oops!
 8. Amazing that an AD would respond in public via the newspaper to conversations made on an internet message board.  Think about that.
 9. This is a Rivals article.  Looks serious to me. Expansion Plans
 10. Get this, Louisiana Tech has never had a sellout at their stadium, even when they hosted Mississippi State a few years back. Less than 25K showed up for a home game against an SEC opponent. FWIW, North Texas has ever sold out a home game.  Closest was 29,439+ (cap. 30,500) for a home game against Baylor early in either '03.  UNT won 52-14.
 11.
If he wasn't AD I think he would go in a heartbeat. Since he is AD I would be a little surprised.
Depends on the money he gets as AD at Lamar vs HC at UNT.  I'd like to have him in Denton, but I think our new coach may have already been selected, and it's not Tidwell.
 12.
I think he's got kids coaching around Frisco.
Tidwell is from Sanger(Denton area) and worked with UNT Athletic Director Rick Villarreal at TCU.
 13.
BTW Green Menace, time to change your signiture on this site. ;) ;D
Thanks.  Forgot about that idiotic signature line.
 14. Please, don't shoot the messenger. Blog
 15. No reason why Lamar can't go after top assistants at some of the up and coming programs.  George Mason, Richmond, Belmont, Cleveland State, Missouri State, etc.  Tidwell will find someone that can put Lamar back on the map.
 16.
So are several others and I'm with coachacola. Nothing against Terry but having Top 5 recruiting classes at the University of Texas is a lot different than recruiting to Lamar University in the SLC. We need a winner, who has head coaching experience at the JC level or DII. I promise Matt Cross and what he has done without dorms in the city of Port Arthur is amazing. I'm pretty confident Coach Tidwell and other administrators in the hiring process has taken note of what he was done in two seasons in Port Arthur.
I've taken note of what Matt Cross has done in Port Arthur too, but he needs a couple of years on the bench as an assistant for a lower level D1 program.  Jumping from Lamar-Port Arthur to the HC job at Lamar Univ in Beaumont could set him up for failure rather quickly.
 17. If I may.... ROC is a nice, likeable guy, maybe a good recruiter too.  And someone mentioned, even as head coach he doesn't have an offensive mind.  Well, shouldn't a head basketball coach have some knowledge of offense?  With that said, the ROC needs to be replaced. Consider this;  back in the 90's, UNT hired the wiz bang recruiting guru out of the University of Texas by the name of Vic Trilli.  Brought loads of talent to Austin (not that that's difficult to do, but you get my point).  Well, Vic Trilli did the same thing for UNT his first recruiting season.  He actually brought in a nationally top rated class to Denton.  Problem was, he couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag!  The guy was a disaster for North Texas for about four years, I think, before he was fired. Lamar can't afford to keep ROC, regardless of his recruiting capacity.  Get someone who can coach, has good bench coaching, and can bring exciting "winning" basketball to Beaumont.  The fans will notice and the stands will start filling up again.
 18.
The NCAA is loosing its leverage.  First Notre Dame was allowed to make its own deal with NBC several years back and just last week UT and ESPN announced a 20 year $300 million tv package.  Do you really think the big schools will allow the NCAA to undermine their revenue.  I think the UT - ESPN deal was in the works and when the talk was of the B-12 breaking up following Nebraska and Colorado's departure Texas wasn't willing to have to share this revenue potential to play in a different conference.
Good post Geezer, and dead on.  ESPN controls just about everything related to college football.  NCAA, not so much, except for rules and statistics.  Just follow the money trail.
 19.

They need to get rid of the FBS/FCS distinction.  Not sure what makes football different than the other sports.  If you want to have football, then have football.  Like all the other D1 sports, the major conferences dominate and nobody else gets much attention.  Let it be the same for football.  Why even bother with the stupid attendance rule?  If nobody goes to a schools football games, then they probably suck and the school can finance the team through other means like student fees or donations. The people who complain most about teams going FBS are the fans of other FBS schools in conferences that suck, like the Sun Belt, because more FBS schools just drains away the little talent they are getting now.  It makes it easier for them to win when they have less competition.  The fans of other FCS schools also don't like schools moving up because they get left in media vacuum that is FCS football.  The FCS championship games draws about the same amount of viewers as the worst FBS bowl game. Hopefully Lamar announces their move to the WAC soon because being even being a bottom of the barrel FBS school like UL-Monroe beats staying in the SLC any day of the week.
i'm sick of fbs/fcs...so i'm reverting back to how it should be I'd rather be good 1-AA than a "ULM" of 1A..they suck
There's not much difference between between a good 1-AA team and a bad 1A team, except the good 1-AA team gets less money, less tv exposure and worse schedules than the bad 1-A team.  But hey, if that's your dream for Lamar then more power to you.
I hope we are good wherever we end up... but.... a good 1AA program has respect...a bad 1A team is a laughing stock who get more respect.....Mcneese or Eastern Mich..Appy st or No Tex?
Good or bad, I would much rather be part of the BCS than the FCS.  I cannot actually tell you who won the FCS title for 2010.  It just wasn't newsworthy to me.  Respect North Texas or not, I still like them in the FBS.
 20.
I agree with you 100%. When you look at Boise & UConn, they were ESTABLISHED 1-AA programs & handled the jump. Lamar is not established yet. The program is in it's infancy & now people are saying it's time to jump up a notch. It could very well work out in lamar's favor...but i sure would hate it if it didn't.
Boise State did it all on their own.  In the case of UCONN, it helped that they were already members of a BCS, Automatic Qualifying conference in the Big East.  That, together with a successfull BB program meant a ton of money that they had access to.
 21.
If you can't be a good 1-AA, then what makes you think you'll be a decent/good 1-A? I don't exectly remember the WAC burning up the airways during the regular season. As far as worse schedules go..have you taken the time to look at the schedules of ULl or ULM or UNT? They HAVE to play 2 or 3 body bag games EVERY year for finances. So to answer your question, I'd much rather be McNeese State University and have respect in the 1-AA ranks, win conference championships, make the play-offs, than be laughed at & the butt of jokes just so I can say my school is 1-A. That's the exact mentality that has put ULL in their spot. Do you really want Lamar to follow that model? I think not.
Not so much for UNT.  We are down to one money game a year at around $1 million.  I prefer to call them "exposure games".  Everyone in the mid-majors has them.  UNT's athletic fee in the form of $10 (I think) per semester hour kicks in after the stadium is completed later this summer.  More people are stepping up to the plate as evidenced by the presentation of a $1 million dollar donation to athletics during halftime of the UNT vs Ark State BB game this past weekend.  So the money/exposure game is an annual thing, but not more than one a year for North Texas.
 22.

I'm sorry, I must have missed something.  How is the demise of the WAC good for North Texas? ???
The next 4 teams to join the WAC will be UNT, ULL, Lamar, Ark st.
UNLV, I have some ocean front property in Oklahoma I'd like to sell you!
 23. I'm sorry, I must have missed something.  How is the demise of the WAC good for North Texas? ???
 24. Lamar better start looking again for an FBS conference to join.  Word on the MWC board is that Utah State and San Jose State are the newest MWC members.  This move would pretty much eliminate the WAC.  San Jose had 8K fans for their last home game.  Go figure.
