Why Not A Shot Clock In High School
I don't understand the argument for the "weaker" teams that would be "hurt" by a shot clock? Either roll with the punches or get out of the ring. If your team is going to get blasted by 30 points without a shot clock, you never really had a chance anyway.
I'm beginning to like you Bush ;) -
I wonder how many schools actually do block out drills.....not to get confused with rebounding drills. kids aren't even taught how to block out on freethrows....next time your at a game watch how many defensive players (when shooting FTs) have there weight on the wrong foot or how they place themselves.....
I understand your thoughts but you are way too deep for these kids. Start them off with basic stuff. Like learning how to catch a basketball. :D

We could make a killing ranking those schools in their non-district strength schedule rankings. Our business venture would even give credit to those teams who lose a bunch of its games. But still get credit for playing against good teams. And an extra credit if lost at home.
Dove- Perhaps you can enlighten me on this. From your perspective, Silsbee played a far tougher schedule which makes them much better prepared to play the good teams. HJ has played nobody and, as a result, their record doesnt mean much. And yet, in the HJ-Silsbee game on Silsbees HOME COURT, with Silsbee shooting 35% as a TEAM from 3 point range, and the Hawks shooting 35% from the charity stripe, it takes a last second buzzer beater for Silsbee to win. If your contention is true about schedules, you are either going to have to admit that HJ schedule does NOT mean they are not a top notch team OR that Silsbee isn't that good because, by virtue of the HJ schedule, they barely escaped an average team.
Not at all. Syracuse's coach by his own admission played a weak schedule and they are #1. But from what I heard Silsbee had an 18 point lead at one time. Probably due to their tougher schedule, it sounds like they were man-handling HJ at one time. Probably due to their tough mental state of mind from a tough schedule. I can only assume that Silsbee let up off the gas after 18 points and allowed HJ back in the game. But thats how basketball bounces sometimes ;) Hmmmm- How convenient- Silsbee was responsible for their big run but the one HJ put together to come back was not a credit to HJ? If that tough mental state is what got the job done, why was that mental toughness not there when they got down 27-14? Why was it not there when they gave up an 18 point lead. If you are correct about this "superior mental toughness" is it safe to say that they will have an even easier victory at HJ as they are bound to be "sky high" going into the game while the HJ squad has had their "bubble busted"? While I did not get the official numbers, it looks to me, from a scorecard standpoint, that "that mental toughness" was present only for 1 quarter out of 4. I know how good and appealing all of that blarney sounds, but there are no facts to support/prove it. Did Florida States blowout of North Carolina come from that "mental edge/ superior schedule" or did Florida State simply pull an ace from the deck while NC pulled a deuce? Wanna bet on the odds of that ACE DEUCE repeating itself?

Can it happen a second time? YES!!!!!

To help with shooting, not necessarily form, but i will say that it helped me to become a highly nationally ranked statistically shooter in college. a 5 gallon bucket was my first goal, the ball barely fit so perfect arch was a must. it was discouraging at first but i had determination unlike kids these days who quit something so quickly without having instant success.....hence xbox, playstation
Ah yes, another one of the "last of a dying breed."

By a rough count and even rougher geography, there were 23 games in the, for lack of better phrase, Beaumont area. Looking at the posts here, there were only complaints about capacity being an issue at 1, yes only 1, of those games. And if I may be so bold, despite the many great matchups and rivalry games that are yet to be played, it is likely that the only issue regarding capacity will recur when the two teams that played in that lone game play again on January 31st. I also find it interesting that the Merrill Center was brought up for as most of you know, I live in the Katy ISD. I am still waiting for when the "profits" of the Merrill Center, which has hosted consecutive Southland Conference tournaments, countless predistrict tournaments, UIL regionals and is even host to a professional (well, sort of) indoor football team, to provide me relief on my Katy ISD property taxes. I paid those last week and it certainly didn't come this year.
But the kids are benefitting from top-notch facilities
I am going to steal a little Gene Hackman from Hoosier's here. The height of the basket, regardless of whether it is in the 10,000 seat Merrill Center or the 1,550 seat Tiger Den is 10', the length of the lane is 15' and the length and width of the court is the same at both. I'm certainly not saying that every school district shouldn't have quality sporting facilities (stadiums, gyms, etc.) but when you pay the tax dollars I do, you are not near as excited about whether a high school kid has the opportunity to play in a Taj Mahal.
Ah, so what you're really saying is that you don't have a kid in high school @ Katy ISD ;) -
Anybody give any consideration to how this would be paid for? Our country has a VERY severe problem right now buying stuff before paying for them and then borrowing to pay.
Nash, you are a dying breed. We've been doing this for years, so why stop now? ;D Plus its for the kids in the community to enjoy while their parents figure out a way to pay for it. -

Why Not A Shot Clock In High School
BLUEDOVE3 replied to BLUEDOVE3's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Reasons why there shouldn't be a shot clock in high school: - HS coaches have to take the players they are given, they don't get to go out and choose players to fit them - A shot clock would actually slow the game down, you would see no more pressing. Why press and take chances when you can just fall back and play defense for 35 seconds? -Can you imagine finding someone to run the shot clock? This is almost laughable. Most schools are lucky to have someone that can just run a game clock. Now you want to find someone who can reset the clock every time the ball hits the rim? Good luck with that!
Weak! ::) A. Thats what coaches are paid to do, coach their players and get their teams better. B. I watched Baylor(?) play a full court press last night, with the time clock. C. See "B." I bet most fans would rather see defense for 35 seconds than 2 minutes of stalling ;) -
Just think if Beaumont ISD had its own basketball center, similar to The Merrell Center in Katy ISD. Local rivalry games such as Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson could play their games in an intimate surrounding tailored just for high school & other regional events. 8)
Trust me, if this comes off rude it wasn't ment to be, but pre-middle school basketball (aka little dribblers) is the worse development of teamwork and players. The parents with the best kids get together and form a team so they can run the table...then there is upwards but I have issues with not keeping score...not sure of the answer.... However I do feel that if a coach is in a community for the long haul they work with all levels, this is how to develope a program...but how often does that happen?
LOL! I remember when I moved to the area and first heard the term 'Little Dribblers." I always pictured these little bitty kids (in diapers) playing basketball. But back to the statement. I never experienced parents getting together to form the best teams unless you're referring to selection of all-star game.
