  1. bobcatfan33... I saw a good bit of your game on Friday. I was impressed by the team's passing. It's fun watching back door cuts work.
  2. Though I always love to recruit...I do think that Dayton is building a good program. The head coach is working hard to improve the entire program. I have seen him at many of the sub varsity games and I even saw him at a Middle School game in Barbers Hill. That shows me he is working hard. Ladybronco #20 does hit it right in that high school ball is different than Junior High and I do wish them luck. They seem to have a good staff and some girls willing to work hard, so we should see them take another step in the right direction this year.

  4. PrimeTime is very good. The part I like about it the most is that it is grade based which for girls is good because AAU uses Jan 1st as birthdate. This way you can play against teams of your grade. We have played teams that were made up of players from 8 different middle schools and had over 100 girls try out and we have played teams that came strictly from one area. You still never know the number of teams and quality of teams that will be there. There is also one in Willis on that date that will have some good teams in it. We are in one in Stafford this weekend that has 12 in our age bracket. There usually is some AAU teams and overall the quality is a step below good AAU tournaments.
  5. PrimeTime Sports is putting on a tournament in Port Arthur on April 14/15. Just checking to see if any teams in area are going. We've competed in a few of their Houston tournaments over the year, but wanted to go East for 1. Link to their Spring schedule: [Hidden Content]
  6. Nederland Regional will have some good teams. In Majors ... Nederland, Barbers Hill, LaPorte and Beaumont are all tough. BH split with LaPorte this past weekend in Liberty. Haven't heard anything about PNG or Lumberton. I think BH beat Nederland in BH tournament, but with home court advantage Nederland will be tough.
  7. Yeah...I guess you can say Canyon is pretty good. 2003 State Championship Game 3A: Canyon 76, Kountze 45 2004 State Championship Game 3A: Canyon 63, Winnsboro 33 2005 State Championship Game 3A: Canyon 66, Cleveland 46 2006 was a down year since they didn't make the championship game. and in 1996, 1999, 2000 they made the championship game in 4A (winning 2) I do hope Crocket can represent Region 3 with a win...but it will be real tough. and on Lombard *from 2003 High School Coach of the Year: Joe Lombard, Canyon High School Joe Lombard had an awesome season this year for Canyon High School. The 2003 Russell Athletic/WBCA Coach of the Year helped the Lady Eagles to a 76-45 win over Kountze in the 3A State Championship. Canyon High finished the season at 30-1 and number one in the USA Today Super 25 girls' basketball rankings. Lombard has led the Lady Eagles to four state championships in his 18 years at Canyon High School. With twenty-five years of coaching experience, Lombard has totaled a record of 838 wins and 77 losses, and he has led all of his teams to the Texas playoffs.
  8. Lumberton is a more experienced team and should win. You never know which Crosby team shows up. If they bring their A game it will be close, but if not, Lumberton will jump on them like they did La Marque.
  9. Exit #800 and go right (North). Field House will be about the 3rd campus entrance (one right before School flashing sign). Good Luck to Lumberton and Orangefield.
  10. On another board, they are talking about Bryan Price from Barbers Hill taking over the Commerce head coaching job. Good luck to him. BH's offense will miss him. [Hidden Content]
  11. To make it far, you have to have a good team, experience, some luck and a good playoff draw. I won't take the Homer route (though I hope we win it all). I'm going with Lumberton to make it to the Regional finals. They are playing good and have recent experience going deep. Dickinson and Jones are on the other side of the Region III bracket and that will help. In 3A Orangefield is opposite of China Springs, Navasota and Silsbee. Though they still have a tough route....it's easier knowing an Austin trip will count on only one win against one of those 3. I think Region III will have the state winner in both 3A and 4A as we have some great teams. It should be a fun ride for some setx teams. Good Luck to all of these teams and I hope Barbers Hill wins it all, or at least a team from the area.
  12. Here is a quick link to the brackets [Hidden Content] They should start filling in the names as the week goes on. and a link to where you can look at the schools in that district. [Hidden Content]
  13. Barbers Hill -74 New Caney - 37 BH has 2 game lead on Crosby with 2 games to go.
  14. As a fan....I would love to have boys/girls Varsity on the same night. Last time we played Crosby in early January both games went into overtime and that would have been a great double header. Tomorrow night we play them again and I have to pick which one to go to. When I played in the early/mid 80's it was the same night..... Our girls team was good but our boys team was not. At least having the girls play before us helped our crowd size (at least til halftime).
  15. The Dayton/Caney Creek game is on Friday at 12:30.
  16. Should be a good tournament. Here are the brackets/times. boys bracket [Hidden Content] girls bracket [Hidden Content]
  17. I agree AirForce84 as far as the scores not always being an indicator of how good a team is. Our 8th grade team usually calls off press on blowouts in the 1st quarter...though sometimes they are already up by over 20 points. Biggest issue is that in these games against inferior teams, many players get lazy with fundamentals and start dribbling too high, reaching in on steals mainly because they can. Playing a team like Orangefield was tough because they were good and the girls had to play more fundamental ball. Last year as 7th graders I think we only had 2 games where the spread was less than 25 points (and that was against HJ another non district team in a tournament). Junior High scores just shows where a team is at that time and does not always project forward. As some of these inferior teams start catching up athletically and with experience the gap will shrink sometimes. The Orangefields, BH, HJ's, HF and others have 4-6 years of experience before hitting 7th grade, while others may not.
  18. Dickinson is very good. I saw them last week in Barbers Hill. Very talented group. The region is very strong this year.
  19. As long as the coaches focus on fundamentals and teamwork, the youth leagues are great. The problem comes when kids play 4-6 years of Little Dribblers and hit 7th grade with terrible shooting form and improper dribbling techniques. Sometimes coaches worry about the wins and don't correct improper fundamentals if the kid is scoring. Looking at the good girls bball teams in the area, you see many with good youth programs (BH, Orangefield, HJ, Lumberton)....but in many of these organizations you'll find good and bad coaches. AAU/Select ball is a good way to get in more games...but that's primarily what it does. Problem comes with focusing too much on going to tournaments and not on learning. There are many good youth coaches out there, and it doesn't matter if they are working with Little Dribblers or Select teams, they coach. Sutherland, obviously knows the game, and better yet knows how to teach it at various levels. oh and as far as 7th grade games go...expect many of those blowouts. Most of the teams in BH district are inexperienced. Hopefully the girls don't pick up any additional bad habits. Last years 7th grade group won every game in district by at least 25 points. Only good games were in a tournament that HF and HJ were in.
