  1. I am quite certain those intimately acquainted with the football program know exactly what they lost. It really is fair in the grand scheme of things. They have, after all, had a living legend, Todd Sutherland, as their long time basketball coach and were able to replace him with Clay Davis, who is no doubt one of the best coaches in this area in his own right. I equate it with the Colts getting to replace Peyton Manning with Andrew Luck.

The good news is Dubois has established a great program there. Just have to find the right replacement to continue his work...

Like Todd, he has been grooming people on his staff to take over for him. It could be a short turn around if the administration chooses to go that way.

  2. IMHO... I would repost the job and start over.... SMH..

It doesn't close until sometime in early January. There is still time for others to apply. If it is coaching only as posted, though, this is about the coaching talent they should expect to get. There are a few quality local guys on the list that I think would be good for the program. Like others have said DeShazo, Latolais and Davis  should probably get interviews. I like what DeShazo has done with the HJ defense and I think he lives in BC. He may be ready to take a step up.

  3. Teacher contracts are a little different. Most districts deal in Term Contracts. If he signed a contract then he may have some recourse:

    Term contracts

    • Run for a specified length of time that can be no more than five years.
    • Are automatically renewed unless the school board votes to "nonrenew" the contract.
    • Require that teachers be given proper notice of renewal or nonrenewal of the contract; if teachers do not receive notice, the contract is considered to be renewed for the following year. The Legislature recently changed the notice deadline from 45 days before the last instructional day to 10 days before the last instructional day. It is unclear whether this new deadline applies to the 2011-12 school year.
    • Can be nonrenewed at the end of the contract term for “sufficient cause.” Districts must have policies in place that state the reasons that constitute sufficient cause for nonrenewal. Almost any reason can be sufficient as long as districts include it in their policies so teachers have advance notice of district expectations.
    • Entitle teachers to a hearing and the opportunity to present evidence prior to a final decision regarding nonrenewal.
    • May be terminated during the school year only for good cause, or the teacher may be suspended without pay only for good cause. (The teacher is entitled to a hearing in either situation.)

Obviously he isn't at the end of his term, so if he signed a term contract then they have to prove good cause for the firing. Now if he hadn't signed the contract, which is what I read earlier in the week, then he technically isn't employed by the district. When I hired on I was told in April they were going to hire me. I didn't actually sign my contract until July because the teacher I was replacing did not resign until then. Technically I was not employed with the district until that contract went into effect. If he hadn't signed anything I don't see where he will have much recourse under the term contract rules.

They also could have signed him to an at-will or probationary contract. That would be unusual but not unheard of. Generally those are used for first time teachers and non teaching staff (maintenance, custodian etc.). If it is one of those then they still have to show cause I believe. the difference is at the end of the term probationary doesn't have the right to hearings.

  4. What happened?...those setx teams get tired of winning pre-district games?

Lol Truth be known what happened was the UIL making 5 team districts. Those teams in 5 teamers have to find other schools with 5 to be able to play week 6.HJ had another school cancel on them late Monday night and they had to scramble just to get a game. They would much rather be playing Tatum than be playing no one.

Thanks Castor ---  why is everyone so hush-hush?  This has taken so long - I want to get excited about the new guy.  Do you have a favorite in the mix?

To be perfectly honest, I don't know much about some of the applicants. A couple of guys that got interviews I know and have worked with at various places. I think any of them would do a good job.
  6. I know interviews are happening this week. I don't know everyone that was interviewed but do know some (Like coach H above, I'm not saying any names). I do know the majority of the interviews were for HC/AD but there was at least one that was just AD. However, I also heard that it is a very slim (meaning none) chance that it would be separated.
  7. For reference:

Schools may have early release up to 6 times a year for a set list of reasons. Playoff is one of the listed reasons. So if they don't have 6 already on the calendar then they are fine. If they have 6 on the calendar (I have no idea what the school calendar looks like) they will have to change one of the scheduled ones to a full day.
