  1. PORT ARTHUR -- At the onset of the 2012-2013 season, no one knew anything about the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks.
Now, the word is getting out.
The Seahawks, at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in Region XIV play, have moved into the Division I national poll, landing at 19th after this past week’s wins over Trinity Valley Community College and Panola College.
“We’re honored to be listed among the top teams in the nation,” Lamar State Coach Lance Madison said. “But our focus has to be on our next opponent. We can’t be satisfied with where we are; we have to move on to the next goal.”
The Seahawks entered this season with Madison taking over not only as the Seahawks’ new coach but as his first season as a head coach anywhere. Add to that the fact that not one player returned from last season’s Region XIV regular-season championship team and most folks weren’t holding out much hope for Lamar State as a basketball power in 2012-13. The preseason polls were indicative of a wait-and-see attitude among prognosticators as the Hawks were picked to finish sixth in the South Zone.
But as the Seahawks hit the road for Paris Junior College and tonight’s 7 p.m. Region XIV tipoff, they are the only team still undefeated for the season in the region and one of three without a loss in conference play. No surprise that Navarro is 3-0 in conference but new league addition Coastal Bend CC is also untouched through three games. Neither Navarro nor Coastal Bend are listed among the top NJCAA Division I teams in the nation this week.
Sharing room in the NJCAA Top 20 are Region XIV teams San Jacinto College-Central and Kilgore Junior College, lending credence to the long-held fact that the region is among the most difficult in the country.
“That says a lot about the tradition and the reputation of the conference we’re in,” Madison said. “So to be ranked along with teams like San Jacinto and Kilgore really is an honor.”
Paris, which is 6-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play, has lost two straight to Coastal Bend and San Jacinto coming into tonight’s showdown with Lamar State.
The Dragons bring three players averaging in double-figures, led by sophomore guard Eddie Leal with 14.0 points per game. Another pair of sophomore guards, Anthony Adams and Mike Harmon, are averaging 10.6 and 10.4 ppg. Adams has been the hot hand since conference play began, hitting 12.3 points per game in three outings.
Freshman guard/forward Ty Allen leads the Seahawks this season with 20.7 points per game, good enough to rank him 18th in the nation in scoring. Sophomore guard/forward Kieran Woods is hitting for 16.4 points per game and Jamal Shabazz is scoring 10.8 per game with a team-high 8.3 rebounds a game this season.
Also working on the inside for Lamar State is 7-foot-1 center Anthony Allen. His 3.2 blocks per game has him ranked No. 5 in the nation in that category. This past Saturday against Panola College, he knocked down 10 blocked shots, seven coming in the first half alone.
“Paris is good fundamentally and they will play us man-to-man. We’re going to have to be strong inside and take advantage of our opportunities to score,” Madison said.
The Hawks will return for one final home game before the holiday break, taking on Bossier Parish Community College on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur.
  2. The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks fell behind early but charged back with a vengeance to beat No. 8 nationally-ranked Howard College by 34 points, 95-61, at the Midland Classic on Friday afternoon.

The Seahawks, who are ranked No. 13 in the nation and now undefeated in four games, fell behind early, trailing by as many as seven as Howard College relied on an early offensive push by Calvin Godfrey. He finished with a team-best 15 points.

With their biggest deficit 11-4 at the 16:23 mark of the first half, the Seahawks came alive with a Lakeem Duncan 3-pointer. Over the next two minutes, LSC-PA outscored the Hawks 9-2 to tie the game at 13-13.

During the next 1:30, the Seahawks were relentless, outscoring Howard College 10-0, extending their lead to 15 points at 47-32 by the end of the first half behind the shooting of Shondel Stewart and Elijah Pittman.

Pittman opened the second half with more of the same, scoring seven of the Seahawks' first eight points, leading LSC-PA to a 19-point lead with just over a minute gone in the half.

Midway through the second half, the Seahawks led by 23 as the fast-paced full-court defense took its toll on Howard College. All told, the Seahawks picked up 18 steals in the game, converting those and other turnovers into 22 points.

Showing their true depth, the Seahawks picked up 62 points off the bench, led by Pittman who scored a game-high 28 points with four rebounds. Stewart picked up a double-double for the Seahawks with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Other Seahawks in double-figures were Brandon Peters with 14 and Lakeem Duncan with 12, all coming from beyond the 3-point line.

Derrick Dawkins, who finished with seven points, and Elridge Moore, five points, each led LSC-PA with four steals.

The Seahawks are back in action today with a game against No. 18-ranked South Plains College at 4 p.m. in the second day of play at the Midland College tournament.
  3. As a longtime sportswriter I have seen a lot of high school football. One of my favorite kids to watch was Jeff Spikes in Burkeville. He ran for more than 3,000 yards in 1994. Won the Willie Ray Smith Award that year, I believe. They would run a misdirection out of a wishbone and before you could find him, he'd be gone.
Thing is ... he only played the first half of most games he was in ... which showed the coach had some class and some caring for the health of his athletes.
  4. Here's what I'm hearing about the lottery funding education ...
    Basically, it's all BS ...
All the money brought in by the Texas lottery indeed goes to education ...
Let's say $50 million was provided to education by the lottery.
Now originally, education had a budget from general funds of $100 million.
So you add $100 million and $50 million and you get $150 million ... right??
    Nope.
Now they only contribute $50 million from the general fund instead of $100 million.
That of course means that in the end, education still has its original $100 million ...
A little political switcheroo there for ya ...
Raise your hand if you're surprised ...
  5. New TABC polls are out ... Silsbee stays put at No. 7 and H-J drops a notch to No. 11 ... wouldn't you think Silsbee would have improved its ranking even though the top 6 all won their games. Is there a strength of schedule factor in how the Top 25 teams are ranked?? Personally, I'm glad H-J only dropped one notch (if they deserved to drop at all) after the game they played Friday night. They were up by a bunch on Silsbee at one point in this game. Silsbee showed its grit in coming back in the fourth quarter, but H-J showed its talent in getting that far ahead of a team as good as the Tigers. ...

    The Top 10 in 3A boys ...
    1. (Last Week: 1) Lubbock Estacado (22-1) (Beat Shallowater and Paducah last week)
    2. (Last Week: 2) Argyle (20-3) (Beat Iowa Park by forfeit and Gainesville last week)
    3. (Last Week: 3) Cleveland (19-4) (Beat Oakhurst and Huffman last week)
    4. (Last Week: 4) Burkburnett (19-2) (Beat Tascosa and Iowa Park last week)
    5. (Last Week: 5) West Oso (20-3) (Beat John Paul II and Miller last week)
    6. (Last Week: 6) Kennedale (20-2) (Beat Rains and Alvarado last week)
    7. (Last Week: 7) Silsbee (20-2) (Beat No. 10 Hardin-Jefferson last week)
    8. (Last Week: 8 ) Liberty Hill (20-4) (Beat Taylor last week)
    9. (Last Week: 9) Hondo (18-3) (Beat No. 19 Somerset and Devine last week)
    10. (Last Week: 11) San Antonio Houston (15-5) (Beat La Vernia and Yoakum last week)

Answer this ... How is a team playing .500 ball ranked No. 13? Is Dallas Madison's schedule so strong that they can lose half their games and still be in the top 15? Also, is Cleveland the real deal? They have four losses and are ranked in the Top 5.

  12. This is the story from The Silsbee Bee and the photo we used with that story. If Reggie's family would like to have this photo or some of the others I have of him playing against Silsbee last year, email me at [email protected] and I'd be happy (and honored) to send them. As a newspaper guy for 25 years I've seen a lot of things. One thing I'll never forget is the look on Coach McGallion's face when he heard the news about Reggie. It was absolute disbelief and heartbreak. I think that represents what a lot of people are feeling right now.

This photo is from last year's Rain Game ... the story is below.
