1. Lamar signed two players this fall that not only were a part of the Juco World Series Champion Navarro Bulldogs but also both made the All-Tournament team.

Navarro has 13 players who have signed with Div I programs:

P Tyler Mapes - Tulane (No. 1 starter, Conference Pitcher of the Year)
P Austin Pruitt - Houston (No. 2 starter, pitched into the 9th of the championship game)
P Tyler Carter - Houston (No. 3 starter)
P Drew Verhagen - Vanderbilt (No. 4 starter)
1B Casey Grayson - Houston (all-tournament team)
2B Christian Stringer - Rice
3B Wes Theiss - Houston
C J.T. Files - South Alabama (MVP, hit walk-off HR to win championship)
RF Garrett Autrey - Lamar (all-tournament team, hit .500 - 7 for 14 with 2 doubles)
LF Rory Myers - SFA
P Ryan Wysocki - South Alabama
DH David Harris - Lamar (all-tournament team, hit .523 with 4 home runs & 12 rbis)
P Corey Roper - New Mexio State
2. . . . "lost another game by bad call to Texas" . . . I remember in the '90s when Kevin Millar and Bruce Aven went to Austin and lost.  It was over spring break and my parents drove us up to the game.  Anyway, late in the game, either all tied up or down by one (cannot remember) but Millar was the runner at third and a teammate (not sure who) hit a deep fly to left field.  The leftfielder caught the ball and Millar tagged up for the tying/go-ahead run and scored.  Well, UT (Cliff Gus) appealed the call at third saying that Millar failed to tag.  The ump agreed and rang Millar up.  It wasn't even close, Millar easily tagged up.  The Cards got hosed again.
3. In my personal opinion this would be a pretty strong team had all the pitching been healthy all season with a legitimate shot at the top 2 or 3 teams in the regular season.  I really think pitching was going to be this team's strength and now pitching is average at best, not because the guys going aren't the top arms but because there is no depth and those remaining aren't the top arms.
4. My favorite parts of this argument is always that:  1. basketball25 was a heck of player and he played in college -  I laugh because he's not the only one on here who played collegiate baseball, and even if he was, that does not mean he knows more about baseball than every other poster on this board.  He is just one man with one opinion, some may agree with him others may not.   2. That Gilligan has run this program into the ground.  Well that's just laughable seeing as the Cards were in "THE" tourney last season.  I'm not arguing that the Cards are greatness but "run into the ground" is a reaching overstatement.  Go back and look the records from past LU teams, not just the last 4 years, and you will find that Cards mixed in some very good seasons with a lot of average seasons.  It's like everyone looks back and pretends like the Cards were regulars in Omaha.

In fairness to basketball25, I think part of his statement is correct - in that the Cards have in the past and should in the future schedule stronger non-conference opponents, especially when it comes to the likes of HBU, TexSo, and PV a&m.  And the Cards should be willing to go on the road and not expect return visits (like the Cards are doing this season with Baylor).  However, I don't think the scheduling, facilities, or Gilligan are what is preventing Lamar from recruiting better players or having better teams.  I'm not saying I know what it is missing but I don't think that is what is stopping the Cards from becoming elite again in the Southland Conference.  For one, this is not college football where the schedule is set 3 to 4 season in advance and for two, the facilities are pretty good especially for a mid-level conference.   If I had to guess why Lamar has dropped a little it is because the investment other SLC schools have made in their baseball programs.  TxState, Sam, and UTSA have really stepped up in all areas from facilities to coaches to campus life.  I think some of the players that Lamar use to be able to get on campus may end up on one of those other campuses and we should be honest and acknowledge that all three of those schools have a lot going for them.  Additionally, Lamar is not bringing in the Northern exports like it use to.  Don't know if the well has run dry, it's easier to recruit locally or what it is but that talent has not been on campus since Michael Ambort graduated.  Finally RPI may be wonderful, but TxState had a strong RPI last season and they did not make "THE" tournament but Lamar did.

As for losing to Texas Southern, all I can say is that I also know a little about baseball, and a little about college baseball, and there is an old adage that says - "you're only as good as the next day's starter".  Every team in college has a couple of guys who can get some outs and at least on Tuesday night the Texas Southern pitchers did just that, just like the Lamar pitchers were able to do just the same to Rice the week before.
5. Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, but I swear some of you could win the lottery and only find time to b*tch about all the taxes you would be forced to pay.  I mean he's a Cardinal now, maybe try throwing a little support his way. In the end  Jeremy Johnson may be bust but it's not like he could not cut it at Sul Ross St. (DIII) and LU is counting on him to take them to the promise land.  As an LU fan, I want them to recruit the best players and anytime you can sign a player that comes from a BCS program that regularly wins its conference and is traditionally a top 15 team in the FBS then I say - great!
6. You can never have too much talent or too much depth.  Aside from the fact that football is obviously a physical sport and any back-up is one play from starting the rest of the season, football at the FCS level could be up to 13, 14, 15 games if your team is lucky enough to make a run through the playoffs.  Plus competition for playing time is only going to make this team stronger.
