I would say it was more of a great play by #2 than terrible defense. Hell, they tried to trap him immediately(smart move) and then another defender left his man to help also. Kid just made a heck of a play. Sometimes those things happen no matter what you do.

He was the best 3A guard in the state and according to TABC was the best player in 3A. He had DI offers and CHOSE not to take them. He CHOSE to go juco and take a chance at getting better DI offers. As for the other comments regarding the post players from '91 being the best in the state. Knowing who made those statements, I can tell you they meant in 3A. Those that made those statements are very knowledgeable about the talent in the state that year. I think you and I both know how TABC works, and how kids gets get elected, nominated, etc. I am not saying he wasnt the best guard in the state last year, i dont know. But just because TABC said so, doesnt mean he is.

I realize you are just a tad biased towards this team, and i do agree they were a great 3A team................But, they werent the end all be all to basketball as so many HJ fans think. First, you claim they were the greatest 3A team ever. Thats a bold statement that can NEVER be supported as fact for obvious reasons. Navasota(1990-undefeated and destroyed playoff competition), Sweeney(3 titles in 4 years), Clarksville(choose a year), Mexia(2 titles in 3 years), Gainsville(2002-athletes not seen at 3A level often), SA Cole(had a guy name Shaq) and even Kountze(2004) were all great 3A teams that would need to be included in the argument. Secondly, you claim they HJ had the best point guard AND the two best big men in the ENTIRE state. Come on, you being serious? Little 3A Hardin Jefferson had 3 players that were the best at their position in the whole state. I am pretty sure no team in Texas, ever, can claim that feat(only exception maybe would be Willowridge in 2001). But i guess you probably think HJ 91 could be them too, right? Well, just from memory here are a few players that played in 90-91 that you claim were not as good as your HJ players: Greg Ostertag(say what you will about him, but he made it to the league and carved out a decent career) Jason Sasser(saw time in the league as well) Troy House(one of the best small school players ever, would have started for HJ) Greg Austin(manchild for Troup) Bobby Taylor(NFL, but could play some hoop) Derrick Battie(saw time in the league as well) Not mention FW Dunbar had a couple of kids go big time D1 that year also. Finally, i dont mean to call you out and i understand your support for that HJ team. They were a great team, ONE of the best 3A teams ever. HJ has a GREAT program and history, but SOME HJ fans take being a homer to the extreme. Just like proclaiming a certain player last year as "best guard in the state", "best player in the area", "oh, he's definately going D1", etc. etc. etc. Guess what, they were wrong. Though he was/is a hell of a player. Thats all, off my rant.

Thats my question too. Im suprised this hadnt been asked earlier. Pretty positive UIL rules state a coach or school employee must be present for any and all UIL events. Thought game had to be forfeited if none were present.

I get what your saying, but they made it to the State Semi's last year with "no defense". Allen is solid, and that district is regarded by many as the toughest in the state. A solid Plano East team that would win district in lots of other 5A districts is staying home for the playoffs.

Mart has had some great players in the past(Quan and Quincy Crosby, John Garret) etc. Whether or not they are home grown, I have no idea. But if EC and Mart do meet up, i think EC would have their best chance to date to pull out a win.

Keithan Hancock needs/deserves/should be on that list. At least ahead of Donahoe.

He was the head coach at Beaumont Eagle Charter as well.

Morton? Dicky, I would list others schools above Morton. They won state for two reasons, Johnson and Johnson. They werent winning state before that and probably wont any time soon. I would put Lipan, Moultan, Laneville, Naz, Brookeland, Goodrich above them.

Sounds fair. Are they a state championship caliber powerhouse right now? No. But they have tradition and they have a good program right now year in and year out. Last years team was very good, and the 03 team was probably even better. Go watch them sometime Dicky. They are very fundamentally sound, run great sets and play very well together. You would enjoy it. No its not 4 or 5A athleticism, but its good ball. BTW Dicky, tell me a little about Madison. I know of them, but not too familiar. They always been 4a? Who is in their district? What part of Houston? Etc.

You started that by bringin up Ozen and i then said BS has history every bit as good as theirs. Common sense tells you that, but i realize we are not dealing with common sense here. No one is comparing BS to your beloved Houston Madison. However, to say that Madison has basketball tradition and then turn around and say BS doesnt, well thats just plain...............(fill in the blank).

Why are you trying to compare a school that has only been in existence for 10 years to a school that has been around at least 70. Doesnt logic tell you that the school with 70 years of playing basketball might have a longer, more distinguished tradition????? Oh, unless you worked at Ozen and cant have an unbiased opinion- that would be you. Do i think in 20 years Ozens tradition will be better than BS. Probably. But thats not the point. Oh Dicky V. I have no affiliation with Big Sandy whatsoever. However, your darn right their tradition is every bit as good as Ozens. I know you cant and wont recognize that, but simple math proves it. And yes i know Ozen is new school. I, originally wasnt trying to "compare" Big Sandys tradition to anyone. You started that. I was just correcting your misguided opinion of Big Sandy. I wondered how anyone could dispute their success after giving you the facts about their past basketball history. Then i remembered reading your thread on the other site about all time great players, teams, etc. and realized no matter what i tell or prove to you, your not gonna accept it. Fair enough. I know i am right. Big Sandy has a very good basketball history/tradition. Simple as that.

Keeping up the tradition? Having a say in who wins every year? Well, that would eliminate about half of the schools you just listed. Permian hasnt done anything in at least a decade, if not more. Though they are improving. When did WOS last win state? 1987, the year BEFORE Big Sandy lost in the state game. Snook? They got hammered at state in 05 and hadnt been a factor since their 80's title run. I wouldnt say these schools are having much of a say in who wins state each and every year. I think we are arguing Big Sandys basketball tradition. You say they have none, i disagree.

Do you understand what makes tradition and history- things that happen in the PAST. Doesnt matter if it happened ten years ago or fifty, it still counts. If that is not a good basketball history, then please tell me what is by your standards. Not everyone can be a Snook or Nazareth or Canyon(girls).

Have to disagree. I know you like to put down the lower classifications, and thats fine. But at least know of what you speak. Big Sandy might not be a "powerhouse" right now, but they have an EXCELLENT basketball tradition. Thye played in the state title game 5 years in a row from 1951-1955, winning one. This was at the same time when Buna was winning those state titles. They then won State in 57 and lost in the title game in 58. I believe they were regular playoff contenders in the middle 80's and lost in the state title game to Paducah and Will Flemons in 88.. And they have had some really good teams over the last decade( losing to eventuall champ Tenaha in 03 in reg. finals) and been to playoffs i think the last 4 or 5 years. So thats 7 state tournament trips, 2 state titles, and numerous playoffs appearances. Thats pretty good basketball tradition in my book.

How come no mention of Tramain Thomas as the 2A coverboy? Pretty neat and a very nice article. Coach V called him the best defensive back he has ever coached.

I was reading the article without reading the editors note above, thinking something is not right here. Its a good article. Texas has come a long way since 1979. What's sad is, for the most part, Texas universities have not reaped the benefit of the improving basketball talent in the state. I sure would like to see him continue playing basketball, but high jumping at the D1 level aint to shabby! What school is interested orangeman? And are there other basketball options for him that he is considering?
