UIL hoops tourney attendance impacted by SXSW

Recommended Posts

The article suggested the possibility of changing sites for the UIL basketball championships after the 2013 season.  I sure hope that doesn't happen.  Going to Austin the few times that I have gone was always a treat.  I guess money talks, so if they change sites, then they will go where they can get the most money.  Alamo Dome perhaps?

How much does the Alamo Dome hold for basketball.  Only so many people will come.  If you get too big, it will seem empty in a big arena.  The drum has only been capacity a few times the last 10 or so years.  Personally, I would hate for it to be moved to a different venue, but the lack of hotels, parking, and other issues might be worth moving it.

SXSW has impacted the State Tournament for some time.  I remember 15 years back when I was a kid and my dad took me, we stayed in the Omni downtown and I met Robert Duvall, Bill Paxton, Willie Nelson, and more.  We always had to book when we left the tournament for the next year and they were charging 250 a night back then.
I would hate to see it leave the Drum, alot of memories for me there, and being at State Capitol and in Austin always had the right feel, but if they have to I would rather see it moved to San Antonio than any other place. JMO

Can't believe you thought the state tourney was still held at Gregory. It's been at the Drum since 1978!!!35 years!!!

You are completely out of touch, you should be banned from any basketball talk. Your credibility is totally shot!!!

    • This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up From the article: “As a parent, then as a homeowner, if you have some equity in your home, then you can say to your child, you know, ‘don’t take out the loan,’” she said. “‘I’ll take out some of the equity to help you pay for tuition so that you don’t graduate with extraordinary student loan debt, and so that when you graduate, you can do your dream job.’” Essentially, Harris suggested that parents give their kids a leg up in the world by being the ones to take out a loan instead. Except theirs would have much higher stakes than just needing to be paid back — it could mean losing their home. 🤦‍♂️

    • It has been frustrating seeing the lack of coverage from virtually EVERY media outlet.  We (Chester) are in the SE Texas coverage area.  There are no radio broadcast from our area, and Ch 12 is the only one that has even mentioned it.   I know I could have gotten donations to cover a SETX Sports broadcast.  Oh well, water under the bridge - we aren’t as big as Silsbee, WO-S or PN-G.
