Big difference between Catholic and Public Schools?

Recommended Posts

Read some notes on the this subject last night about the differences between Catholic and Public Schools in Texas. The writer was stating:

*There is a big difference between the Public Schools and Catholic School in Texas.

*For instance the Public Schools could only play 10 games,2 tournaments and one game per week. Compare to the Catholic Schools that can play up to 30 games,5 tournaments and 3 games a week.

*Most parents that have a son playing basketball at a junior high do not know much about the Catholic Schools. Not only they would be playing more games but at the same time also getting a better education.

*The exposure is greater because most Prep Catholic High School coaches attend the Junior High basketball tournaments looking  for talent for their schools.

first, dont you mean parochial schools or private schools not all of them are catholic
*For instance the Public Schools could only play 10 games,2 tournaments and one game per week. Compare to the Catholic Schools that can play up to 30 games,5 tournaments and 3 games a week.
public schools can play 21 games and 3 tournaments and play twice a week (only on one school night) and i know a school that has played over 40 games in a season for the last 4 or 5 years
*Most parents that have a son playing basketball at a junior high do not know much about the Catholic Schools. Not only they would be playing more games but at the same time also getting a better education.
got a relative who has taught at both private and public institutions and have seen those that come from a private to a public struggle mightily while those that go from a public to a private suddenly become all star students
*The exposure is greater because most Prep Catholic High School coaches attend the Junior High basketball tournaments looking  for talent for their schools.
so public school coaches dont attend junior high tourneys?  yes private schools recruit but that doesnt equate to more exposure

***on another note private schools are the only place i have ever seen where a team can be winless in district, still make the playoffs, and then win a state championship.....yeah!  everyone gets a ribbon!

Strake Jesuit schedule (UIL Public school technically), a Catholic school that plays by public school rules because they are in the UIL, shows 22 games (19 played, 3 left), and two tournaments:

http://www.strakejesuit.org/s/103/index.aspx?sid=103&gid=1&pgid=1023

I'm positive SJ has maxed out their schedule, which is why they don't play St. Pius, Westbury Christian, Second Baptist, Beaumont Kelly and Dallas Jesuit every year. The only rivalry kept was St. Thomas.

Now look at Houston St. Thomas' schedule (TAPPS school) - They played in 5 tournaments, and they have 19 games on the schedule.

http://athletics.sths.org/basketball/schedule.php

Note: Both squads played in what's called the Texas Jamboree, where schools from across the state and nation are invited to participate in about 20 games in two or three days. These are just scheduled games, so one of SJ's 22 games was against a school from Alabama, and two of St. Thomas' scheduled 19 games were against Austin LBJ and Sam Houston. (Basically it's just a central location provided by the Jesuit campus to raise money)

Hopefully the statistics and websites provided add some facts to the discussion.

And check that, Strake has scheduled a home/away each year with Dallas Jesuit... so we kept two rivalries.
Plus you have Duke and UNC breathing down Rasheed's back. ;)

He's pretty solid, I'm thinking about going to watch them play Friday night, not sure yet. Who's your local squad Dove?
