Mid-season All Orange Leader Baseball Team

ORANGE — Here we are getting close to the midway of the district seasons and man oh man does Orange County have some stars.

So why not put together a list of the guys?

It is always fun to put the All Orange Leader Baseball Team together and this year I am introducing the Mid-Season All Orange Leader Baseball Team.

MVP: Jace Statum, Orangefield

This kid can do and is doing it all for the Bobcats. He plays some of the best center field around and is the ace of the pitching staff. He is batting well over .400 and leads the team in many categories. He has just around 20 stolen bases.

OFFENSIVE MVP: Jordan Darnall, WO-S

Darnall is helping put the Mustangs right in the middle of the playoff race in 21-3A. He is hitting over .400 with nearly 30 RBI and leads the team with almost 10 home runs. He plays shortstop and is no slouch on the mound. An injury recently put Darnall back behind the plate. He is certainly a do it all player for Jesse Riojas.

DEFENSIVE MVP: Matt Hicks, Bridge City

No surprise here and this pick is for a variety of reasons. Hicks plays some of the best defense at shortstop in all of Southeast Texas. When he actually makes an error, the whole stadium goes quiet. Then when on the mound, Hicks is as good a pitcher as there is. His overall defense is a vital part of the Cardinals who are looking to win another 21-3A title.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Brandon Landry, LC-M

Landry did play a little last year but not much due to an injury. Landry is back in full force this year for the Bears who are right where they always are — the 4A playoff picture. Landry can hit for power, for average and is a swift shortstop. The injury is a thing of the past and Coach Steve Griffith is a happy man with Landry these days.

P: Trae Hester, Vidor

1B: Chase Angelle, Orangefield

2B: Justin Sparrow, WO-S

SS: Quinton Evans, Orangefield

3B: Joe Robertson, Bridge City

OF: Joe Mojica, Vidor

OF: Mason Dallas, LC-M

OF: Luke Rhodes, Bridge City

C: Jacob Felts, Orangefield

Thanks. What county are PNG and Nederland? Not that it really matters, just for informational purposes only.

Very impressive list.

Would Matt Menard be in consideration for Newcomer of the Year or was he on varsity last year as a starter?

I like the list but 2B is played by the Anderson kid as much as the Sparrow kid. The Anderson kid  is batting over .440 in district and over .300 for the year. He plays 3B  or 2B according to who they have pitching when he is not on the mound.  He will probbably pitch 6 of the 10 district games and maybe 7. He is now 5 & 2 for the year with a low 3 era.  He should get some consideration.  I agree the Menard kid from BC is a good selection also. Also his competition might be the kid from HF who plays short. I do not recall him being a varsity player last year. He is really productive for HF.
