BH coach/AD candidates make an impressive lot

MONT BELVIEU — Barbers Hill superintendent Greg Poole was right last month when he said to expect an impressive list of applicants for his school’s athletic director/head football coaching job.

The list of 84 applicants for the job that went to two-time state champion coach Ronnie Gage included more than 30 men who were head coaches in 2009 and several more with recent head coaching experience.

At least one of those head coaches, however, had a complaint about the way Poole conducted the search.

“I was hesitant about applying for it because me and coach Price were such good friends,” Pasadena Memorial head coach John Snelson said, referring to former BH coach Don Price.

“But I think Barbers Hill really is a good job, a great community and an excellent school district, so I decided to throw my hat in the ring. I didn’t know the format the process was going to go — that the superintendent would go after the people he wanted.

“Obviously, he went after people who have either played for a state championship or won a state championship. We’ve done well at Pasadena Memorial, but we’re not at that level yet.”

Snelson, who has a 28-17-1 record, one district title and four playoff appearances in as many years, was referring to the fact that Poole recruited both Gage and Abilene Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer to apply for the job and invited them, along with Tatum coach Andy Evans, another two-time state champ, to tour BH facilities and meet with school officials.

Evans, who attended middle school in Barbers Hill while his dad, Joe Evans, was head coach there, said there was talk of a salary “up to six figures,” but he wasn’t officially offered the job during a tour last week.

“There was not an offer made,” he said. “It was a deal where I came in and visited with them. It really came down to the fact that I pulled my name out.

“I’m happy where we’re at. I don’t feel like we’re through,” said the coach whose team won a Class 3A title in 2005 and another in Class 2A in 2006.

“And I still get to coach with my dad if I stay in Tatum.”

Evans’ dad, 76, is an assistant coach at Tatum.

“I don’t think he wants to move again,” Evans said.

Besides Snelson, the applicant list released Tuesday in response to Public Information Act requests by several area media outlets also included local 5A head coaches Keith Knowles of Clements and Mike Jackson of Chavez and 5A head coaches Mike Zierlein of Austin Akins, Robert Wilcox of Round Rock McNeil and Richard Kattner of Pflugerville Connally.

Class 4A head coaches include Shawn Halloran of North Forest, Robby Clark of Midlothian and Mike Lawrence of Fort Worth Western Hills.

Notable head coaches of smaller schools include Larry Haynes of Hardin, Derek Fitzhenry of Giddings, Cris Stump of Bridge City, Bo Robinson of LaVernia, Leland Surovik of Columbia and Ricky Tullos of Cleveland.

Baytown Christian head coach Donald Houser applied as did Sterling assistant coach Joe Berezoski.

Zierlein was hired this week as head coach at Clear Falls, a new school, and Fitzhenry was expected to be approved as new Dobie coach Tuesday night.

Probably more like Stump was looking to move up in classifications or salary. BH was a good job opportunity with very good pay.

Can you be a wealth?

Yes, I believe it is a cornish game hen. Very tasty indeed when sauteed with butter.

Oh. I thought it was an old, old wooden ship used in the Civil War era.
Nope. That's called a "welk" I believe. Common mistake Ron.

Didn't sound like he was whining to me. He complimented BH on being a great place, and said he did not have State Championship experience. I took it that if he would have known that was what Poole wanted that he wouldn't have wasted his or their time.

I gotcha, just one mans opinion. Just like it is my opinion that not everything printed in papers or seen in the media is true. I know Coach Snelson, he's a hard nosed, matter of fact guy, not some one to whine in the paper . But it was a catchy "Hook" by Dave Rogers, sure made me want to keep reading.

I agree... the writer said the word complaint.... The quote from Snelson didn't fit that description in my opinion either.

Glad I didn't see this earlier...Wouldn't have been able to sleep if I would have known that Kroeker applied from  PN-G. Thank you, Barbers Hill... ;D
I hear ya, but it will happen eventually. Kroeker is a good one and will succeed as a head coach eventually. Until then we will enjoy having him as our defensive coordinator.

Regardless of the reason why you apply, it's got to suck to have your name on that list............. Oh well, guess that comes with the job.

By the way.......just so everyone knows - if the Houston Texans Cheerleader's photographer position opens I am applying.  ;) ;)

    • Starting pitching has been shaky the last few weeks due to some injuries outside of Hagen Smith.  He goes tomorrow, so y’all should be fine
    • Manchin may get it but any mention of the radical left that wanted to get rid of the filibuster and end almost 220 years of history because the Democrats are mad?  The House and Senate are obviously different legislative bodies with entirely different election processes and rules for a reason. The House can vote on laws with a simple majority vote. The Senate put rules in place that it would make it much tougher to pass laws. Laws should be difficult to pass. The Senate is often the holdup of the right and left. It takes 60 votes to break the filibuster so any law will almost certainly require agreement at least in part, from opposing sides of an issue. Because they can’t get laws passed, the radical left is like a baby having a tantrum and wants to change over 200 years of history and make it potentially ridiculously easy to pass laws. I have seen current poll maps and it is possible for the Republicans to sweep into complete power in November but by the tiniest margin. That would possibly mean that a single vote margin in both houses could enact what you might call the radical right laws. There would be nothing that the Democrats could do to stop any legislation whatsoever if the left (they are all radical, minus Manchin) got their filibuster rule changed.  That is where the current filibuster comes into play as any new law would require several Democrats to agree with the majority Republicans and vice versa.  Do you want the potential for your radical right to have free rein as the radical left wants by killing the filibuster or is the radical left just as (if not more) dangerous? Let’s see if we have a history in this area? Oh yeah, the Democrats changed the rules in the Senate to allow federal judges to not have to overcome the filibuster. Obama was not getting his federal judge nominations passed and being angry, they changed the rules instead of nominating more moderate justices. They were warned that it would come back to bite them. They didn’t care and chose the nuclear option to change the rules. Oops! Any guess how Trump got all of his Supreme Court nominees passed against strong Democrat opposition? The Democrats got rid of the filibuster for federal judges after another tantrum   So when you are so worried about the radical right, are you equally concerned in what the radical left is always doing by changing rules and history which were put into place just for situations like we are in? So while Manchin gets it, what about his other 50 colleagues (49 + Harris)?  What concerns you more, Abbott and Paxton or the Democrats who want to make it to where if the Republicans do take over, they can go wild… at least in your mind?
    • MODS please remove that ISD twitter link! I had no idea it would copy the whole posting. I only highlighted the portion about the venue change. Sorry about that!
    • See why I don't trust my Hogs?
    • Come on dude, don’t take anything away from the kids on the field. If you want to talk uncharacteristic, we made what 3 or 4 errors in game one. Y’all had 2 EARNED runs.  Defense is normally our strong suit. Your ace didn’t strike out a single one of our kids. Like I said also, you did not out hit us in game 1. Hell you barley out hit us in game 2. We had all the uncharacteristic walks. Josh pitched a hell of a game is what made that game what it was.
