The results of a referendum ballot on split-conference alignment for Class 2A schools was also unveiled. The 2A schools voted 121-75 in favor of a split-conference alignment for football, which would separate 2A into Division I and Division II prior to the season, rather than after the regular season. That setup is currently used in Class 1A six-man and 11-man football.

Class 2A will begin its split-conference alignment, which places 16 districts in Division I and 16 districts in Division II prior to the regular season, in time for the 2010 football season.

Do we know if/ when 3A and 4A will vote on this?? Thought 3A was already suppose to have done so???
I hope 3A votes it down. This is a terrible idea. With the way the economy is and how school districts have to really pinch pennies these days, they don't need extra costs on travel expenses. Some school districts are having it tough already with the schedules they have.
Not me I am all for it. Heck we travel quite a bit in preseason any way, it would just be in reverse.
Schools like  Tarkington, Shepard & Coldsprings would be district games instead of preseason. We could play the larger 3A and other Classes in the preseason.

No doubt...next season I'd say this would be the toughest district in 2A....DI or DII!

There is no way Deweyville will ever be successful with this format (if this is the district they are in.)  People have to remember that coaches do not get paid very well and are humans.  It is very difficult to keep people in Deweyville.  This would make it even more difficult to keep coaches there.  It does not end with football.  Some schools are going to experience success in this format and propose something similar to this for other sports.  It too will be passed, creating "hellacious" Tuesdays and Fridays.  With some of the pressure these coaches experience on the teaching side, I would not be surprised that many get out of coaching because many would view the position as undesirable.  It is very sad considering how revered these positions are in society.

It is already getting difficult to find people to coach ( and teach) in many rural areas in the state.  Many of the coaches will stay in small school only until they can find another position in a better paying I.S.D.
Trust me, there is a pretty good turn over at the smaller school level.

Not only does it complicate Texas high school football, but it makes a mockery of it.  The same good teams are still going to make it to the playoffs because they are good teams.  I would actually like to see who makes it to the playoffs (regardless of size) and compare their records to the now-antiquated three-team format.  The next complaint we will hear is only TWO teams from each district will be put into the playoffs.  There is no other word to describe this than STUPID!

I feel for Deweyvilles travel woes, but also Newton's. Kirbyville and Buna are the only teams in the proposed district with less than an hour travel time. Anahuac is 2 hours, Winnie and Hardin are 1.5 hours, and Kountze is 1+ hours.  This directly translates into fewer fans for road games which gives "home field advantage" a new meaning. Is this what they meant by "more of a chance to win"?

FROM SMOAKY.com

(Got this from Buck Cargal on huddleuptexas.com)

2008 UIL 2A -- 200 to 429
Divisional cut would have been: 294+ (103 teams each, counting Ponder)
16 districts each, 2 playoff teams.

2008 ADMs are included after each school.
(Number in parenthesis is its assigned 2008 district)

(I tried to make it as balanced as possible between districts, but in a couple of situations I assumed that UIL would go unbalanced to keep from pulling one school from a centralized group and putting it into a far-flung district.)

Some notes included:

DIVISION I
Smallest: Alpine 294, Hearne 294, Paradise 294, Elysian Fields 296, Ballinger 299, Jacksboro 299.

District 1 -- 6 teams
Amarillo* River Road (1) 398
Bushland (1) 339
Childress (2) 311
Friona (2) 328
Muleshoe (2) 358
Tulia (2) 300

District 2 -- 5 teams
Denver City (3) 374
Littlefield (3) 413
Ransom Canyon Roosevelt (3) 329
Shallowater (3) 404
Slaton (3) 346

District 3 -- 7 teams
Alpine (4) 294
Ballinger (7) 299
Brady (8) 391
Grape Creek (7) 347
Kermit (4) 365
Presidio (4) 388
Wall (7) 331

District 4 -- 9 teams
Bangs (8) 329
Clyde (6) 419
Coleman (8) 316
Comanche (8) 338
Dublin (8) 324
Early (8) 406
Eastland (6) 325
Merkel (6) 359
Tuscola Jim Ned (7) 340
NOTE: Somebody could go west to District 3, to balance at eight teams each. Tuscola would be a candidate. However, this is an example where I figured UIL might make a play to reduce their travel considerably.

District 5 -- 5 teams
Bowie (5) 419
Boyd (9) 339
Jacksboro (9) 299
Paradise (9) 294
#--Ponder (10) 312

District 6 -- 6 teams
Aubrey (10) 422
Caddo Mills (13) 387
Callisburg (10) 349
Gunter (11) 310
Pilot Point (10) 429
Pottsboro (10) 395
NOTE: That's a LOADED football district!!!!

District 7 -- 7 teams
Daingerfield (17) 376
Hooks (12) 356
Hughes Springs (17) 315
Pattonville Prairiland (12) 348
Queen City (17) 344
Redwater (12) 366
Winnsboro (13) 399

District 8 -- 8 teams
Big Sandy (18) 314
Elysian Fields (18) 296
Grand Saline (13) 333
Jefferson (17) 385
Liberty City Sabine (18) 392
New Diana (18) 293
Quitman (13) 331
White Oak (18) 399

District 9 -- 7 teams
Blooming Grove (14) 334
Clifton (16) 359
Godley (15) 411
Grandview (15) 341
Dallas Life Oak Cliff (15) 352
Malakoff (14) 339
Palmer (15) 328
NOTE: Malakoff could swing to another district. But this one made most travel since, though still not anywhere near ideal.

District 10 -- 8 teams
Bruceville-Eddy (16) 304
Elkhart (19) 357
Hearne (20) 294
Little River Academy (25) 335
Marlin (20) 379
McGregor (16) 327
Teague (20) 375
Troy (16) 383
NOTE: Elkhart and Teague are at a huge travel disadvantage here. It would have been the same going east. Elkhart and Teague are out on an island, stuck between Waco and Lufkin.

District 11 -- 7 teams
Buna (23) 387
Hardin (23) 360
Hemphill (22) 311
Kirbyville (22) 426
Kountze (23) 403
Newton (22) 378
Warren (23) 356
Woodville (22) 358
NOTE: Deweyville is the only current 23-2A member that would not have made D1. Isolated on the SE Texas-Louisiana border in the D2 format, it would be expected that DHS would declare up to Division I to remain with most of its 23-2A mates.

District 12 -- 7 teams
Altair Rice Consolidated (26) -- 343
Anahuac (23) 412
Hallettsville (26) --337
Hempstead (26) -- 356
Hitchcock (29) 346
Van Vleck (29) 295
Winnie East Chambers (23) 368
NOTE: Anahuac is the western (and southern) most member of current 23-2A. With quick access to the interstate, it would be suitable to join Houston-area members on the west side of the channel. Anahuac would be needed to make a six-team district. Hallettsville lies halfway between Houston and San Antonio, making it a candidate to go further west. However, the lack of 2A-I schools around Houston, and with Rice Consolidated close by to the east, Hallettsville is needed here to make a full district. The six schools surround metropolitan Houston on all sides.

District 13 -- 9 teams
Blanco (27) 322
Comfort (27) 382
Florence (25) 325
Geronimo Navarro (28) 429
Lago Vista (25) 369
Lexington (25) 300
Salado (25) 397
SA/FSH Cole (27) 334
UC/RF Randolph (27) 306
NOTE: Seemingly, UIL would want to pull one out of this district and move to 15, to balance the districts. The one to get pulled would be Cole or Randolph. And how you decide between them I'm not real sure.

District 15 -- 7 teams
Cotulla (31) 344
George West (31) 360
Jourdanton (31) 359
Natalia (31) 305
Odem (30) 313
Taft (30) 351
Vanderbilt Industrial (29) 328

District 16 -- 5 teams
Bishop (32) 352
Hebbronville (32) 305
San Diego (32) 404
Santa Rosa (32) 343

==============================================

DIVISION II
Largest: New Diana 293, Trinity 293, Corrigan-Camden 292, Arp 291, Franklin 291, Howe 291, Millsap 291, Rosebud-Lott 291, Dimmitt 289.
Other notables to stay down: Arp, Cisco, Holliday, Lone Oak, New Waverly, Paul Pewitt, Refugio.

District 1 -- 6 teams
Amarillo* Highland Park (1) 216
Dimmitt (2) 289
Floydada (2) 273

Cisco (6) 266
Millsap (9) 291
Olney (5) 205
Hawley (6) 221
San Saba (8) 228
NOTE: This would shape up as a five-team district. But with a 7-team next door, Olney would be the western-most team to get pulled over (like Graham was in 3A).

District 4 -- 6 teams
Alvord (9) 236
Chico (9) 216
Henrietta (5) 280
Holliday (5) 255
Nocona (5) 261

Harleton (18) 214
New Diana (18) 293

District 10 -- 8 teams
Crawford (16) 208
Franklin (20) 291
Hamilton (16) 256
Hico (16) 246
Jarrell (25) 245
Moody (16) 201
Rogers (25) 258
Rosebud-Lott (20) 291
NOTE: There are long drives to Hico and Hamilton. But there wasn't any better place for those two to go.. It was reasonably workable, until Franklin showed up. Well east of Waco. Now that's a damned hike to Hico and Hamilton!!! But if Franklin goes east, it's hikes get worse having to wind through the woods. Figure that if this district came about, Franklin agrees to play those two schools in Waco, and/or on a Saturday.

Distrtict 11 -- 7 teams
Arp (19) 291
Frankston (19) 250
Garrison (19) 204
New London West Rusk (19) 260
San Augustine (22) 243
Shelbyville (22) 207
Troup (19) 269

District 12 -- 8 teams
Buffalo (21) 225
Centerville (21) 225
Corrigan-Camden (21) 292
Deweyville (23) 246
Groveton (21) 203
Jewett Leon (20) 228
New Waverly (21) 270
Trinity (21) 293
NOTE: Deweyville is the big loser here, being the school in the current 23-2A that would have stayed down. And, they're only located on the SE Texas-Louisiana border, with absolutely NOBODY around them. Odds are, DHS would elect to declare up to D1 to stay with most of its current 23-2A mates.

District 13 -- 8 teams
Bloomington (30) 240
Boling (29) 266
Danbury (29) 243
East Bernard (26) 256
EM Tidehaven (29) 262
Schulenburg (26) 236
Wallis Brazos Consolidated (26) 280
Weimar (26) 207

District 14 -- 5 teams
Dilley (31) 233
Harper (27) 208
Johnson City LBJ (27) 201
Poth (28) 246
SA Brooks Charter (27) 224
NOTE: Poth is the closest to the SE of San Antonio, so it gets pulled to avoid a four-team district. Tried to move Harper and Johnson City, could have moved Brooks, Poth and Dilley to 15. But, for Harper, there are NO options. It has to go south. Johnson City could have been a distant member to the Jarrell district, but there aren't direct roads there. At least going south, there are some good roads.. Dilley is the only school SW of San Antonio in this division.

District 15 -- 6 teams
Karnes City (28) 279
Kenedy (28) 206
Nixon-Smiley (28) 285
Refugio (30) 260
Skidmore-Tynan (30) 239
Stockdale (28) 225
NOTE: Poth would have been here if not pulled to 14. It's just NW of Karnes City and Kenedy.

District 16 -- 5 teams
Banquete (30) 254
Freer (31) 226
Premont (32) 239
Riviera Kaufer (32) 210
Three Rivers (31) 202
NOTE: Three Rivers and Freer get screwed here, but somebody from the Corpus area has to go to the Valley (as use to be in 4A).

People will not care about the cost.  They just want a chance to win.  School with 210 cant compete with school of 430. Same in 3a with schools of 440 competing with schools of 900. It will pass.
I agree that they don't care about the cost, but the part about can't compete is a copout. If you want to win you have to build a program. To build a program go get a good quality coach and give him time and support to build from within. Upgrade facilities to have something to build with. Community support through thick and thin plays a big part in winning programs. Wanting a chance to win and doing something about a chance to win are two different things.
Totally agree , it does not matter the size of the school. Like champion said thats a total copout .
