Without the help of President Donald Trump, the deadlock with Russian President Vladimir Putin would have continued, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said Monday.

Rutte said Trump was instrumental in getting the Russian leader to come to the table for discussion to ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“Without President Trump... This deadlock with Putin would not have been broken," Rutte said during a Monday appearance on “The Ingraham Angle.” "He was the only one who could do this, starting in February.”

Rutte also said Trump was right in his criticism of NATO over the lack of defense spending by its member states. Trump has long demanded that NATO's 32-member countries spend more to ensure their security.
