I like Texas Stadium, Homer Bryce Stadium(SFA), Reliant Stadium, Galena Park North Shore Stadium, Stallworth Stadium, Rice Stadium, and of course Berry Stadium like I mentioned before.

ALL-TIME HIGHEST ATTENDANCE

Texas High School Football Playoff Games

Attendance is not an official statistic kept at Texas

high school football playoff games, so state records are incomplete.

Attendance for these 11 games are among the highest on record in state history:

Attendance Game Site Year

49,953 Plano vs. Port Neches-Groves            Texas Stadium 1977*

46,339 Southlake Carroll vs. Euless Trinity      Texas Stadium 2006

45,790 Highland Park vs. Waco                      Cotton Bowl 1945*

45,000 Houston Washington vs. Galveston      Rice Stadium 1968

45,000 Dallas Adams vs. Richardson              Cotton Bowl 1967

39,102 Garland vs. Katy                              Astrodome 1999*

39,102 Stephenville vs. Port Neches-Groves    Astrodome 1999*

38,570 Port Neches-Groves vs. Houston Kashmere Astrodome 1977

38,374 Plano vs. Highland Park                      Texas Stadium 1980

38,000 Odessa vs. San Antonio Jefferson        Memorial Stadium (Austin) 1946

36,000 Fort Bend Willowridge vs. Houston Yates Rice Stadium 1988

* state championship game

Looks like the stadium's that have had the largest attendances are....

Texas Stadium - all time largest (three games in the top 11)

Astrodome - (three games in the top 11)

Rice Stadium - (two games in the top 11)

Cotton Bowl - (two games in the top 11)

Memorial Stadium (Austin) (one game in the top 11)

Katy and PN-G must have played a double header in 1999 for the 39,102 attendance game.

Schools that appear most in the top ten....

Port Neches Groves (three)

Plano (two)

Highland Park (two)  where is Highland Park (isn't it in Dallas)???? please reply...

Wow.....

Just dawned on me...

Thirty years ago...

PN-G was finishing up their last season as district champs going undefeated in district and then advancing to the state championship game in Dallas which set the all time attendance record.  The Kashmere game I believe was a quarter final game that at that time was the largest crowd in the Astrodome.

Talk about some vivid memories...

I was close with my 40,000 estimate on the PNG-Stephenville game.  :)

Yes you were.  And I remember reading that a reporter was near Coach Briles when he stepped onto the Astrodome turf and saw about 30,000 people on the PNG side.  He turned to one of his assistants & said something like, "I thought Port Neches had a population of about 12,000."  ;D  Awesome display of area support for PNG that day, despite the outcome of the game.

Back on topic, my favorite places to play in the post-season are SHSU, Rice, & my new fave, Baytown Stallworth.

I think the obvious would be Reliant.  How many schools actually get playoff games there?  Other than that, I think Galena Park sets the standard for a modern day stadium.

As far as smaller schools go, Nederland's stadium would seem nice for early playoff games with the jumbo-tron.  I'm hoping that PN-G's stadium will be attractive once construction is complete.

PNG/Katy did play a doubleheader that day in the 'Dome.  Katy played the early game, and PNG was later that night.  That game was the only time I've had to sit in the end zone in the Rainbow section for a HS playoff game.  The atmosphere was something else.

I was fortunate enough to be one of those 49,000 in attendance at the 1977 state title game between Plano and PNG. Great atmosphere, but wasn't too impressed with Texas Stadium. Plastic seats, and not just the hole in the roof but there was a open gap about 15 feet high that encircled the stadium. The wind would whip through there and it wasn't too comfortable up in that upper deck. I'll take the Dome over that venue anyday.

Agree....

Texas Stadium is the Astrodome on a meager budget.

Can't wait to see what Jones has in the doing on the next Cowboy's stadium...

Should be very impressive...

Does anyone know what is going to happen to Texas Stadium when they finish the new one????

I heard that it was going to become the largest Muslim convenience store in Texas. ;D

The Dome was the BEST, nothing else would come close. I never saw it as a dump. It was clean and functional and it had a lot of history.

The next best would be Sam Houston State, such a beautiful backdrop and the air has a really piney smell.

Reliant would be awesome for the playoffs if they kept the prices within reason.

    • I will never understand why someone cares what decisions a family makes regarding their own child? Maybe Joe Burrow learns great life lessons from burning up all his eligibility sitting behind Justin Fields at Ohio State but I’m sure him and his family feel like they made the right decision by transferring to LSU, becoming the #1 pick and now being the highest paid QB in NFL history. Same for Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield and Jalen Hurts at their first stops.    I think it was more beneficial for Reggie Branch to transfer to Crosby and end up having an opportunity to play for a state title versus staying at GCM and learning life lessons while he loses and probably doesn’t go D1 because his team is a perennial loser. If Robinson throws for 2k yards this year it’s going to be a lot better for his recruitment purposes than sitting on the bench at BH, not to mention he’s going to get significant looks because of the kids he’s on the team with and the offers/commitments they’ve already made. He’s not being taught to run from competition, he’s being taught to gamble on himself just like all those other guys I mentioned did.
    • You have found Utopia. I live in the real world.
    • Every Yuppie wants one.  Give me a V-8 with loud pipes, and they can have their electric vehicles.  Was working a major incident one day and we had a road blocked off.  Police vehicles with lights going and a kid pulls up in a Tesla.  He - let me stress that HE is sobbing uncontrollably because he is at 5% battery life and HAS to go down the road we have blocked to get to a charging station.  He pulled over and literally threw a temper tantrum because we would not let him through.
    • Have you noticed that it's always the libs that bring up race?  For a long time now whenever a lib is losing an argument or have nothing else to say they bring up racism.  Or something silly like institutional racism.  LOL!
    • Ha!  Whatever that means!
