Do we (the fans) put to much of an emphasis on rankings?

Some people surely put too much emphasis on rankings, at least as far as high school. You can read entire threads or posts on here once the season gets cranked up from people that really seem to get upset at who is ranked above who.

It is nothing but a tool for discussion. That is especially true when our playoff system includes every team. You can be an unranked 4th place team in your district and have a shot at the championship game. If everyone agreed with rankings, there would be no need for rankings.

That is not true in college football where you have to be ranked to get to the big dance.

True, high school rankings could actually be done away with. How often does the preseason #1 in any classification win the state title? Sometimes but not often.

The college game needs the rankings to exist in it's current format.

Ranking are peoples best guess by returning letter-men, team success year before, speed, strength, coaching and other factors. Many times teams go up or down in ranking because the first ranking was wrong or the injury bug bit a team. Like I said its a best guess and it gives us something to talk about before a game in actually played. I'm ready for some football !!!!!

Rankings are worthless except as message board fodder.

We are talking about high school kids.  They are going to miss tackles they should make, miss field goals that look easy, drop passes in the end zone, fumble for no reason, and overthrow their receivers every week. They are unpredictable and prone to physical and, especially, mental errors.

Rankings are always good locker room inspiration when used by the wily coach. Always looking for emotion and drive, using rankings, along with "they tried to date your sister"  ;D, to motivate an "underdog" to come out biting. You never see a no 1 ranked team shouting "We're no 2, we're no 2". Rankings mean little. Wins mean it all.
