  1. The only idiot would be the guy that expected to keep his job after three straight sub .500 seasons in one of the worst conferences in the NCAA or his buddy!!! Probably best that you don't let your inner thoughts out as a member of the local media. Calling the people that pay your bills idiots is not smart!!! I just lost a lot of respect for you as a professional. I didn't know I was employed by setxsports.com. I'll start sending my bills your way. If you get your feelings hurt over something on a fan board, I feel sorry for you. Oh come on, you lost a lot of respect for me as a professional? You don't even know me. Come pay me a visit, I'm at Parkdale all day everyday.
  2. All of you guys are idiots. Whoever the next coach is, you guys will be calling for him to be fired in mid season anyway so it doesn't matter who Lamar brings in.
  3. FRISCO, Texas – The Southland Conference has received financial bids and supporting documentation from four Texas cities interested in serving as host for the league’s conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in 2012, 2013 and 2014.  The four cities are Arlington, Beaumont, Frisco and current host Katy, where the 2011 event will take place March 8-12 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. The tournament has been played at a neutral facility since 2007, and Katy, a west Houston suburb, has hosted the event since 2008. “We are very pleased to receive four quality bid packages from these great locations,” Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said. “It speaks very highly to how much the tournament has grown since our league went to the neutral site format in 2007. These bids ensure that we can continue to improve the event, and provide a traditional and outstanding Division I postseason basketball experience for our student-athletes, coaches, and those who follow our teams.” Katy bid on all three years for the event to continue at the Merrell Center. Arlington bid on all three years for the tournament at the new College Park Center, scheduled to open in the 2011-12 season on the UT Arlington campus. Beaumont bid on all three years played at the Ford Park Arena, and Frisco bid on the 2013 and 2014 events at Dr Pepper Arena. The conference’s athletic directors shall serve as the bid review committee, and it’s expected the group will make recommendations to the league’s Board of Directors for final approval in the coming months.

  6. Denver University, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State will join the WAC in 2012-13 to offset the departures of Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada to the Mountain West, multiple sources told ESPN.com. UTSA, which still needs official approval from the board of regents, and Texas State will join in all sports. Denver will join for all sports except for football, since the Pioneers don't play at the FBS level. The WAC will have eight football members, nine for men's and women's basketball. The WAC would have had six members in 2012-13 if nothing had been done with Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Idaho, New Mexico State, Utah State and San Jose State. An announcement is expected from the WAC on Thursday. Montana could also join the WAC in all sports, especially if the Grizzlies decide to bump up from FCS to FBS in football. Montana, a FCS power, is expected to make a decision in the next few weeks. If the Grizzlies decide against the move then Seattle would likely step in with all sports except football. The WAC's perfect scenario, according to multiple sources, is to get to nine football schools, including Montana and 10 basketball schools. UTSA will start its football program as an FCS Independent in 2011. UTSA won't be in the Southland Conference in football that season. UTSA is then expected to make the jump to FBS football in 2012. UTSA will play in the Alamo Dome, home to the Alamo Bowl. Texas State and UTSA will leave the Southland Conference and pay an estimated $250,000 per school exit fee. Denver, which has been in the Sun Belt since 1999-2000, won't have a penalty for leaving, according to sources. The WAC's automatic berth to the NCAA tournament wasn't in jeopardy since the league had until 2014 to get to seven members. The WAC was prepared to add BYU to its membership for all sports but football in late August before the MWC invited Fresno State and Nevada to block the move. BYU went independent in football but then chose to put the rest of its sports in the WCC. Fresno State and Nevada wanted to leave the WAC for next season but struck a deal to stay until June 30, 2012, in exchange for paying a lower exit fee of $900,000 per school.

  14. Despite going into the 2010 Southland Conference Baseball Championships as the No. 7 seed in the eight-team field, Lamar University’s Cardinals made Corpus Christi’s 3,500-seat Whataburger Field their own little pleasurable playground. Beginning with a 4-3 victory over second-seeded Northwestern State in the first round, the Cardinals swept through the four-day tournament to win it in stunning fashion to earn Lamar’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 2004 and its’ 13th overall. Coach Jim Gilligan’s gallant club followed the win over Northwestern State with back-to-back triumphs of 10-7 and 9-3 over No. 6-seed McNeese State, which had defeated them four times during the regular season. The Cards then overwhelmed regular-season champion Texas State 17-7 in the championship game. The Cardinals were assigned a No. 4 seed in the Fort Worth Regional where they went up against the nation’s fifth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs on their home field in the first round. Playing before a partisan crowd of 3,135 in Lupton Stadium, the Frogs pulled away to a 16-3 win. The Cardinals bowed to Baylor 6-4 in an elimination game the next day but not before Joey Latulippe slugged a three-run home run in the ninth inning or before Jonathan Dziedzic rose to the top of the SLC’s strikeout chart. The dramatic home run was the sixth of the season for Latulippe, a junior catcher from League City who finished the season with a .302 batting average. Dziedzic, a freshman left-hander from Humble Atascocita, struck out eight Baylor batters to improve his season total to 114 in 94 innings, moving him one ahead of the 113 strikeouts accumulated by Texas-Arlington’s Jason Mitchell in 112 innings. With his eight K’s in the season finale, Dziedzic zoomed past former Cardinal pitchers Mike Pasqualichio, Craig Fisch and Rick Nesloney into second place on Lamar’s one-season strikeout list. With 127 in 2002, only Clay Hensley, who now pitches for the Florida Marlins, has had more one-season strikeouts than Dziedzic. Before Latulippe and Dziedzic came to the forefront during the Fort Worth Regional, the center stage at Whataburger Field belonged to outfielder Anthony Moore. After collecting 10 hits in 16 at-bats for a sizzling .625 average, the senior from Cedar Hill was voted the SLC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and he was named the CB360 National Primetime Player of the Week. He hit three home runs in tournament play, drove in six and scored six. Latulippe, who hit safely in all four games, and Dziedzic, who had a win and a save during tournament play, joined Moore on the 11-player, all-tournament team. The Cardinals finished the season with a 35-26 record, marking the 21st time in Gilligan’s 33 years at the helm for them to reach that plateau. Their five-game winning streak to open the season included a 13-7 victory at ninth-ranked Rice University, and they also won two of three games over No. 21 Southeastern Louisiana. With junior shortstop Aaron Buchanan and junior second baseman Andy Mena leading the way with respective averages of .349 and .347, the Cardinals batted a stout .301 for the season. Senior outfielder Quentin Luquette led them in runs batted in with 52 and in stolen bases with 18, and Moore was the home run leader with 10. Senior right-hander Matison Smith topped the pitching staff with a 10-4 record and a 4.68 earned run average, and his 117.1 innings pitched rank third on the Cardinals’ all-time, one-season list. Mena was voted to the All-SLC third team, while Luquette, Smith and junior pitcher Eric Harrington (8-3, 5.02 ERA) made the honorable mention list. Other Cardinals batting over .300 were junior first baseman Wade Mathis (.328), junior third baseman Pablo Salinas (.323), Luquette (.310) and Moore (.309).

  16. BEAUMONT, Texas -- The Lamar University women’s basketball team has been selected to play in the Preseason WNIT for the upcoming season. The Lady Cardinals will be one of 16 teams in the tournament. The pairings will be announced next month. “This is a big deal for Lamar,” women’s basketball coach Larry Tidwell said. “The WNIT is one of the most prestigious preseason tournaments. It’s an honor that’s second to none.” The Lady Cardinals are coming off one of the best seasons in school history, posting a 26-8 record, winning the Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles and participating in the NCAA Tournament for just the second time. “We hope the Preseason WNIT will jump start us for an outstanding 2010-11 season,” Tidwell said. The entire Preseason WNIT includes: Austin Peay (Ohio Valley), Central Florida (Conference-USA), Charlotte (Atlantic 10), DePaul (Big East), Florida (SEC), Hampton (MEAC), Iona (Metro Atlantic), James Madison (Colonial), Lamar (Southland), Missouri State (Missouri Valley), Purdue (Big Ten), South Dakota State (Summit), St. Francis PA (Northeast), Toledo (Mid-American), Utah Valley (Great West), Valparaiso (Horizon).
  17. From Bob West: Lamar basketball coach Steve Roccaforte still isn’t ready to divulge his latest recruiting class, saying it’s not yet complete, but online recruiting tracker Hoop Scoop has blown Roc’s cover and offers some interesting insight. Hoop Scoop, which rates each signee from 10 down to 1, then ranks recruiting classes based on total points, has Lamar No. 12 nationally. According to Hoop Scoop, Roccaforte has signed 10 players, including 6-2 guard Devon Lamb, the nation’s No.1 junior college scorer at 28 points per game, and 6-6 Brandon Davis, the No. 15 JC scorer at 23 points. Hoop Scoop  listed Lamb and 6-5 Vincenzo Nelson from Itawamba JC in Mississippi as the top signees in the class. Asked about Hoop Scoop’s Lamar breakdown, Roccaforte would only say, “It’s not 100 percent correct.”
  18. BEAUMONT – As Lamar University continues preparations for the return of the Cardinals to the gridiron this fall, it will add luxury suites to the growing list of first-class accommodations planned for the new football complex.  This newest addition will be named the Morgan Suites, James Simmons, president of the university announced at a news conference. The naming is in recognition of a gift of an undisclosed amount from the Morgan Charitable Foundation on behalf of Glen and Teri Morgan, Simmons said. The gift is part of the university’s “Investing in the Future” comprehensive campaign that now totals more than $66 million toward a campaign goal of $100 million. “Lamar University played an important role in our lives and we are honored to play a small role in making this endeavor successful,” Glen Morgan said. “Glen Morgan’s support of Lamar athletics is a tremendous help in bringing football back to the university,” Simmons said.  “We are delighted to have the Morgan name become a permanent part of the new football complex.” “This facility will put us on par with some of the best collegiate stadiums,” Simmons said. “Glen and Teri have made it possible for us to build these luxury suites that will be a capstone to the overall project.” “The suites will be absolutely first rate,” said Billy Tubbs, athletics director at Lamar. “It wouldn’t be possible to build them without the Morgan’s generosity. We are very thankful for their support of Cardinal football and Lamar athletics.” That complex already includes Provost Umphrey Stadium with the Dan F. and Sandra A. Smith Press Box overlooking the W.S. “Bud” Leonard Field. At the south end of the field, the new 54,000 square-foot Athletic Complex will encompass the former Higgins Field House. Fans will keep track of the progress of the game on the jumbo video board made possible by Education First FCU. Lamar’s team is working out on the Coach Vernon Glass Field of Champions in preparation for the 2010 season. Southland Conference play will begin in fall 2011. The Morgan Suites will be built at the north end of the field and attached to the Montagne Center in the area beneath the university’s Red Room reception area that offers views of both the football field and basketball arena. Seven new suites will be built and will lease for $25,000 per year with a three-year commitment, officials said.  The leases include 16 tickets to each home game and parking passes. Each suite includes a bar with four stools overlooking two tiered rows of six seats each, a total of 16 seats. The suites will open to the front and will feature motorized windows that can be lowered as desired. Each suite includes a small refrigerator and cabinet space. Food and beverage service will be available through the university catering vendor at additional charge. The gift continues a pattern of giving to their alma mater. In 1984, Glen Morgan made a very generous gift to establish a scholarship in his father’s name.  His support came at a time when very few alumni were making such significant gifts, said Camille Mouton, vice president for advancement. A native of Beaumont, Morgan graduated from Lamar in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in business, then attended South Texas School of Law, earning a juris doctorate in 1978. He was admitted to the Texas bar in 1978. He is a partner at Reaud, Morgan and Quinn in Beaumont. Teri Morgan graduated from Lamar University in 1985 with a bachelor’s in speech pathology/audiology.  While in school, she was active in the Lamar music department and performed at football games in Cardinal Stadium. Teri currently serves on the board of Family Services of Southeast Texas and has served on the board of CASA. In addition to his leadership of many organizations in his profession, Morgan served as a board member of the Lamar University Foundation, and is an honorary member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ Local 479, Beaumont Professional Firefighters Local 399, Beaumont Police Officers Association and the Texas State Building and Construction. “The return of football after 21 years has generated incredible excitement and enthusiasm in Southeast Texas,” Simmons said. “This gift and the suites we will soon build, are icing on the cake. “Thanks to the generosity of donors like Glen Morgan, the university is making good on its commitment to a first-class football program with state-of-the-art facilities,” Simmons said.
  19. From mays.tamu.edu (I guess her mom works at Texas A&M) Senior point guard Gia Ayers, who helped lead the Byan Lady Vikings to the Class 5A Region II championship game, has been named first-team all-state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Clarissa is extremely proud of Gia, who has been named the Most Valuable Player from District 12-5A. Gia has averaged 14 points, 4.0 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game. Clarissa is also very happy to announce that Gia has verbally accepted a basketball scholarship from Lamar University. Congratulations, Gia (and Clarissa)! [Hidden Content]
  20. BEAUMONT – Lamar University will add a lot of glamour, class and style to its future football schedules, beginning in the 2012 season. On Sept. 15, 2012, the Cardinals will play a game against the University of Hawaii in Honolulu’s scenic Aloha Stadium. The Cardinals will step it up even a notch more during the next two seasons when they’ll tangle with Big 12 powers Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. “It’s exciting for our program to be able to get these games,” said Lamar coach Ray Woodard Thursday. “These are opportunities to play on larger stages, so these games will naturally give us a recruiting advantage. “Anytime you can get the added exposure these games will bring us and at the same time get some financial help for your program, you need to do it. These are win-win situations for us.” The Cardinals will play Oklahoma State’s Cowboys in Sillwater’s Boone Pickens Stadium on Sept. 14, 2013, and they’ll travel to College Station’s mammoth Kyle Field for their 2014 season opener against Texas A&M on Aug. 30. “Not only will going to Hawaii be a big treat and a great trip for the players and our fans, we’ve scheduled it right,” said Woodard. “We’ll have an open date in our schedule the next week, so we’ll be able to stay over for a couple of days, and everyone will get to see the sights and go to the beach. “It won’t make us short on our preparation time for our next game, because we won’t play it until Sept. 29. As for playing Hawaii, their teams have been very good in recent seasons, and they’re especially tough at home. It will be a big challenge for us to go over there and stay focused in those surroundings.” Woodard, whose 2010 Cardinals recently played their Spring Game in preparation for making their return to football after a 21-year absence this fall, expressed equal excitement over landing Lamar’s first football games ever against Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. “With the upgrades it has made to its athletic complex in recent years, Oklahoma State is as good or better, facility-wise, as any school in the country,” said Woodard. “Personally, I’ve never played or coached in Stillwater, so I’m really looking forward to it.” With Woodard and offensive assistant coach James Brown having played their college football at the University of Texas, they are familiar with the trappings of Texas A&M’s Kyle Field as are Cardinal defensive assistants Roger Hinshaw and Craig McGallion, who played collegiately at Rice the University of Houston, respectively. “Again, it will be exciting and a huge challenge to play before such a large crowd in an enormous stadium,” said Woodard. “Kyle Field is one of those venues that is historically tough to play in. The Aggies have a great homefield advantage – one of the best in college football – but we’re extremely excited to be going there.”
  21. Roebuck’s ninth-inning home run gives Cardinals 7-6 victory over University of Houston BEAUMONT – For the second game in a row Wednesday night, Kevin Roebuck wore the hero’s hat for Lamar University’s baseball team. Roebuck, who hit a grand slam in Sunday’s come-from-behind victory over Sam Houston State, blasted a two-run, walkoff home run in the ninth inning this time around to boost the Cardinals to a 7-6 win over the University of Houston. Roebuck, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the eighth inning and stayed in to play centerfield, sent a 2-0 fastball high over the leftfield fence, much to the delight of the crowd of 1,086 in Vincent-Beck Stadium. It was his third homer of the season. Shortstop Aaron Buchanan led off the Cardinals’ ninth with a single up the middle, advanced to second base on Andy Mena’s perfectly-executed sacrifice bunt and went to third on Quentin Luquette’s groundout to the right side of the infield. Roebuck’s blow made a winner of Brandon Chambers, who worked the final two innings to go to 3-0 on the season. The senior left-hander from Silsbee was also the winning pitcher in Sunday’s 14-7 comebacker over Sam Houston State. Wednesday’s clutch victory will send the 24-15 Cardinals into their weekend Southland Conference series against UTSA riding a five-game winning streak. The loss dropped the Cougars to 16-19 on the season. Buchanan, who contributed an RBI triple to Lamar’s two-run fourth inning, paced the Cardinals’ six-hit attack by going 2-for-4 and scoring four runs. He raised his team-high batting average to .393, and he also walked twice to run his team-leading season total to 32. First baseman Wade Mathis delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single to left field in the third inning to put the Cardinals up 3-0. The Cougars tied the score, however, with a three-run fourth inning. Buchanan’s RBI triple in the fourth returned the lead to the Cardinals, and Andy Mena added a run-scoring single later in the inning. Again, the Cougars tied the score by scoring two sixth-inning runs, and they pushed across an unearned run off Chambers in the eighth to go up 6-5. The Cardinals will play a rematch against the Cougars in Houston on April 28.
