I agree 100%. Carthage is ripe for an upset this season. Reminds me of the 2018 Dawgs but our problem is on the opposite side of the ball. In 2018 it was our D that was a liability. In 2021 it is the offense. I think against subpar competition the offense is really good, but I’ll have to see them execute at a high level against a good defense before I’m not worried. They looked unstoppable against Center and I do believe games like that will help them build confidence, but I would love to see them look good this week against Jasper’s D.

I have a better question. How many players from the 2016 WOS could’ve started on the 2017 Carthage team? Not at RB and not at LB for sure. Ingram just ran for 86 yards on 15 carries yesterday and looked as good as he has ever looked. Carthage has 2 WR that are still playing football at the FCS level from that team. JD was the POY, but Capps is still playing college football at the FCS level. Colbert in the secondary was probably our best player. OL? Come’on man. 4 star Ty’kieast Crawford couldn’t even start on that team. 2017 Carthage had legit DI talent. Which players from 2016 WOS were highly touted prospects? So these conversations will never end. We can go back and forth all day. 2016 WOS was an all-time great team that blew thru a bad schedule (6 out of 10 regular season opponents had losing records). They were absolutely awesome. But just slow down they would beat any Carthage team ever.

That’s not the argument, the argument is 2016 WOS was better than any team Carthage has fielded. All you have to do is project 2020 Carthage vs 2016 WOS on Cal Preps and it has the Dawgs winning 28-19. I don’t think any of us Carthage fans are arguing 2016 vs 2016. I don’t think that’s much of an argument. But to say all of the Carthage teams? That’s asinine.

I agree, and that was against a really good run D. People will have a hard time stopping that play. I think after the Manvel game Crosby goes on a run and #20 is going to be a big part of that.

Don’t know why Crosby didn’t run the ball a lot more. 20 was a beast. On the best drive you guys had they fed him the ball on the drive to put Crosby up 24-20. Think Crosby coach probably out coached himself a little bit last night. Feed that man the rock!

Sloppy game overall, just happy for Carthage to come out with a victory. This was a pretty big step up in competition from the 5a teams we have played the last 4-5 years. Crosby literally played in the state title game last season. No matter what anybody says this is notch in the Carthage program’s belt. Huge win IMO. There is always the question whether or not Carthage can compete at the higher levels, I think wins like this show there is no doubt they could. When we put Marshall on the schedule this is the type of games that we’re expected. In 2018 it was a close game and Marshall went 3 rounds deep that year, but they have fell off since then and basically refused to play us this year. Their coach said it didn’t benefit them to play Carthage (aka get blown out by a 4a DII school). Crosby had some great looking players on both sides of the ball. Very impressed with their D-Line. They also had some athletes on offense. Stud QB, RB, and WR. Not sure why they didn’t out the ball in #20’s hands more. Should’ve committed to running the ball more. That kid is a baller. Kirkwood was also impressive on that long TD. He is FAST. Carthage really missed their starting center. Anybody that knows Carthage football knows the importance of our center. But in all honesty, I don’t know how much of a difference having all our starting O-Line would have made in the run game. Crosby D-Line was very good. That has to be the best D-Line we will see all year. Those kids dominated the LOS. Where I think having our starters would’ve made the biggest difference was in pass protection. Knowing assignments and picking up stunts and blitzes. Tough night for Roc. Cuff came in and played great, but I honestly still think this is a competition at the QB position even with how good Cuff played last night. We won’t see a D as good as Crosby again this season, so things will look a lot different against 4a competition. Regardless we have depth at the QB position which is a great thing to have. Very impressed with Carthage WR’s. That will be a special group later in the season. Excited to see Paddie develop. Kid is a burner. Hatten is the leader and 4 star. Wade is a playmaker. Overall I think this was a great 1st game for both teams to see where they are. Definitely a ton of things to work on going forward for both teams. I think both these teams have success this season. Cannot remember the last time Carthage was down 17. I think you would have to go back to 2016 in the 1st game against Henderson? Not sure. Maybe 2015 against La Vega. Everybody saw what Carthage could do in high definition. They scored 70 unanswered points while setting the 4a (old 3a) scoring and yardage records in a state championship game. Not to mention Kip Lewis and Brandon King went totally nuts on D. It’s there for everybody to see. The result speaks for itself. What Carthage did to Gilmer should be illegal.

Huntsville? Come’on man. Saw their best team in a while have to take Marshall to the last play of the game to get out of the 3rd round in 2018. Carthage beat Marshall much easier that same year. You guys are giving way too much credit to 5a DII. Crosby just beat the #5 team in that class. Is Crosby world beaters? Ennis who is the #1 team got beat in the 2nd round by an I ranked team. Carthage could win a state title in 5a DII this year. In 2020! There I said it. They don’t lose at Jerry World. If they made it, they would beat any team in that division.

I’m going to go ahead and say it, Carthage will give Aledo all they want. I have seen Aledo many times over the years. They usually play the same day we do or the day after us. I watch all the games at Jerry World. Carthage would be a top 5 team in 5a DII. Name 5 teams better. Don’t think you can do it. But that’s as far as Carthage goes. 5a DI is a different story. Start getting up there with Denton Ryan, HP, Longview, Manvel, etc. But I don’t want to hear about Aledo blowing out Carthage. Plenty of years Carthage can play with and beat them. This is one if those years. 2017 was one of those years. 5a DII is not a great division no matter what people want to think.

Exactly! This is why Carthage continues to be so dominant. Obviously it helps to have great players, but when Carthage is carrying 70 kids on the varsity in the playoffs (a lot of freshman and sophomores) this is a huge advantage in getting the next group ready. And you better believe that is what Surratt is doing. He is playing the long game. Of course he wants to win this year, but always planning for the next.

He was 14-18 for 275 yards and 3 TD with no interceptions. Another very efficient game. Carthage passing game is really clicking. Had 2 one play TD drives where he dropped dimes on the receivers. One for 35 yards and one for 94 yards. For the season 131 of 180 for 2,249 yards. 26 TD and 2 Int. 73% completion is outstanding, especially in this Carthage offense. Not a lot of easy short passes to pad the completion % stats.

Come’on guys. I know Carthage fans are tough to deal with, and we have kinda came over here with the mighty Carthage attitude but you gotta be kidding me. Argyle ain’t got nothing for Carthage. I understand wanting to find something to get under Carthage posters skin, but this? Carthage is a terrible matchup for Argyle. You can look at the PG / Silsbee / Argyle connection this season. I mean if Argyle would smash Carthage, what would they do to the rest of 4a? Anyway much respect for SETX fans and supporters. And we all have the highest amount of respect for WO-S and other great programs in this area. All of us wanted nothing more than a matchup with the Mustangs. Just weird situations and a crazy season with the COVID and everything else that made 2020 such a crazy year. Look forward to next season to start it all over with the back and forth. Carthage will be in 4a DII R3 for a long time. We will have plenty of good discussions in the future.
