I figured that some would call Coach's words unambitious. I prefer to call it tempering enthusiasm with realism. I love that football is back at Lamar, but let's not make this program something that it is not. It is not a program that has a lot to offer a Top 20 FBS team for that team to come to Beaumont. I'm not saying at some point that it won't. But let's step back folks! At this point last year, a team from Lamar University had not played a football game in over 20 years. You don't go from that to FBS ready in a year. I don't care about UTSA or others....Lamar is not there yet! I think of it as sort of a coup that in merely the 4th year of the revival of this program, Lamar will have managed to land on the schedule of a BCS conference team! Of course, I harbor no illusions as to why they will be visiting Stillwater, Waco, College Station or even Honolulu for that matter. It is for those schools to provide an opportunity for their fans, alumni and boosters to see their school kick the crap out of somebody. I still remember when ULL (then USL) went on their barnstorming tour which lead them to Jordan-Hare Stadium where Bo Jackson literally ran the Ragin Cajuns back to downtown Lafayette. They got exposure alright...an entire nation saying "Those poor, dumb bastards." But think of it this way, those that support the A&Ms, the UTs or the LSUs. Do you think that they flock to the games to see who has come to town? No. They flock there to see their teams play whoever it is that comes to town. That is why even when lil' Lamar University comes to town, Kyle Field will be filled to capacity. Whenever Lamar has that sort of following, not a following drawn by the novelty of the program or a concert following (that is a following drawn by who happens to be in town for the weekend), then it will be ready to host FBS teams.
Well said grad.
Grad's first loyalty is WOS, period. It appears to me that he doesn't want Lamar's football team to be better than the Mustangs. That's kind of sad to me.

Southland Conference Tournament

One of the hardest things is knowing when to leave. How many times have we seen through the years a great boxing champion stay around to long only to get embarrased. Gilligan has been a good one and a great ambassodor for the University. Can't say as to when he will step aside. This year I am sure is a disappoinment for him. -
NO LAMAR TO THE WAC...END OF STORY...PERIOD

If no western schools join then that leaves room for Lamar, SHSU, and others. It's just a matter of time before the WAC morphs into a southwest conference. If Lamar wants to go FBS then they join the WAC, unless there's a major shakeup among the conferences then there's more opportunity for Lamar. A few months ago Tidwell said he thinks there's going to be some major changes coming to the CUSA, Sun Belt and other conferences. I think there's a good chance that will happen. Either way, Lamar has a another year or two to prepare for a move to a FBS conference. It could be the WAC, the Sun Belt, who knows, but it's probably going to happen.
Coach I like a lot of what you say but I wish I was as optimistic as your are. I think the WAC is in trouble. The western schools no doubt want a minimum number of schools in that region to have a west division that makes sense for them economically and from a rivalry standpoint. They just keep getting stymied on potential schools to join. I think that is ominous to the future of the conference. Don't know how this is going to play out, but I hope that something develops with the Sun Belt for LU. That is my opinion now of what is best for LU.
this i what i've been saying (and getting blasted for) since the first mention of the WAC
If the WAC had good leadership, then they would not be heading for trouble and could be a good option for LU to go FBS. It is now my opinion based on what has played out over the last few months that the WAC can't help themselves and will eventually fold. I have changed my opinion of them as a viable option. My hope is for LU to go FBS. If you feel you were being blasted, it came from a tone of wanting LU to stay FCS and in the SLC with no desire to go FBS. That's how I read your posts. It wasn't personal, just a real disagreement of what we each feel is best for LU athletics. -

Who is LU's QB next year?
I'd like to ask this question in three years ;D
I don't know for sure but I thought that Roc was the highest paid BB coach in the SLC at $135k, so that would make Knight the highest paid.
Get this, Louisiana Tech has never had a sellout at their stadium, even when they hosted Mississippi State a few years back. Less than 25K showed up for a home game against an SEC opponent. FWIW, North Texas has ever sold out a home game. Closest was 29,439+ (cap. 30,500) for a home game against Baylor early in either '03. UNT won 52-14.
Doesn't look like Ms State traveled well either.

The athletic bigs that LU has had in recent history were of that variety, ala Fairley, Beard, etc.. The only guy that PK signed to TT that had any ties to LU was Petteway (his big brother was a staple at LU several years back and the younger version was at many of the games), but he has Big 12 talent from what I hear and would probably not be interested based on that fact alone.
I don't expect any TT recruits to bolt as Gillespie kept Asst Coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Beard from Knight's staff. It would be a nice surprise but not likely. -

FBS Worst College Football Stadium Experiences
Giovanne is at Augustana. Has compiled a record there of 199 - 89 = .691. He has had 4 conference championships in his 11 seasons there with three of them in a row '06-'07-'08. Augustana is a NCAA DIV III college. At Lamar Grey's 6 season record was 80 - 85 = .485. In his 17 year career as a "Head" his record is 279 - 174 = .615 And he does coach golf when it is is season. Sounds (and looks) to me like he is enjoying what he's doing and where he's doing it.
And he is really a great guy!!! No kidding! Probably the best overall person we have had on the LU coaching staff. Tubbs is still my favorite coach at LU! :) -

Why do you always have to bring the rain. The hope is can Knight at least try to bring Duke here. Coach K can help a friend out.
