DISD in more trouble? UH OH!! New DISD grade changing allegations point at principal 08:06 AM CST on Friday, February 8, 2008 By BRETT SHIPP / WFAA-TV DALLAS — Problems continue to mount for the Dallas Independent School District as new allegations of improper grade changing once again point at high school administrators. In this new case, the accusations come from a Skyline High School teacher, who says he too was retaliated against after trying to speak out. John Stine says over the last eight months he has had a strange daily routine. He walks into work, signs in and then walks out to head home. He has no kids, no classes and gets full pay. Stine said this all began after he was kicked out of his classroom by his principal last year. Ever since, he said he has been paid not to come back. "It ruins you," he said. "I'm there to teach kids." In the fall of 2006, Stine was a first-year teacher. He was a business professional turned educator that was hired by Skyline to prepare students for the world of media production. Admittedly, he said his expectations and standards were high. "And I told the students, if you do the work, you will pass," he said. "The students who refused to do the work or any of the assignments failed." In his first grading period, the vast majority of his students did do the work. For example, in his first period class, only four students failed. But then Stine said he was approached by administrators. He said they told him he was being too tough on his kids, specifically his athletes. A few weeks later, he said he learned that the associate principal, Ward English, had slashed through any grade 72 or below and round it up to 75. According to the Texas Education Code, "a course grade issued by a classroom teacher is final and may not be changed unless the grade is arbitrary, erroneous or inconsistent with the District's grading policy." The grade change must also be reflected on an official grade change form. "Mr. English should be able to come up with that grade change form that I signed if I agreed to it. Stine said. "I would like to see that grade change form." In a written response, English said he did not fill out a grade change form "as a matter of expediency," and that Stine was "in agreement that the grades should be changed". Stine said the improper grade change undermined his authority over his students; and when he filed a complaint, he was removed from his classroom. Now, he said he is being paid to stay away. Stine is just the latest teacher to allege grade change abuse made by a principal. The first accusation arose at South Oak Cliff High School. And more recent accusations were made at Roosevelt High School. In all three cases, DISD officials said they are investigating. However, in all three cases, no principal has been disciplined. Stine said until that happens, the only pay off for speaking out that he has seen is payback. "One of the reasons why teachers don't stand up for what's right at DISD is when you do, you get retaliated against like you do with me," he said.

LSU fires Brady but allows him final opportunity to coach Tigers BATON ROUGE, La. -- Barely two years removed from a Final Four appearance but now sporting the worst record in the SEC, LSU has parted ways with head coach John Brady. Brady's firing was first reported by several Baton Rouge media outlets on Friday morning and later confirmed by LSU spokesman Kent Lowe. Brady will be allowed to coach the Tigers on Saturday against No. 7 Tennessee before handing the reins to assistant Butch Pierre for the remainder of the season. LSU has called a 2 p.m. ET news conference, at which time it said it would explain its decision to let Brady coach one more game. The Tigers are 8-13 overall, 1-6 in the SEC West, and have lost 17 of their last 23 conference games. Brady, 53, has been the coach at LSU since the 1997-1998 season. He won the SEC championship in 2006. Brady's record this season is 8-13.

Lamar Escapes Nicholls With 72-68 Overtime Win Dawkins leads with 20 points and five 3-pointers THIBODAUX, La. - Kenny Dawkins scored a team-high 20 points and Lamar scored all of its points in overtime from the free throw line to escape Nicholls State with a 72-68 overtime win at Stopher Gym on Thursday night. Lamar (12-8, 6-1 Southland) made 11-of-14 in the extra session and 21-of-35 for the game in winning its school-record third overtime game of the season. The Cardinals also overcame a tough night shooting - finishing with 39 percent - and 20 turnovers. They did control the glass to the tune of 46-37. Dawkins made five of Lamar's nine 3-pointers. Lamar Sanders added 14 on 5-of-8 shooting, seven rebounds and three blocks. Darren Hopkins and Justin Nabors each finished with 10 rebounds and eight points. Nicholls (6-17, 1-7) was led by Ryan Bathie's 22 points on 8-of-21, including five 3-pointers. The first half saw each team struggle to take care of the ball as 23 turnovers were committed. Lamar took its largest lead of the half at 19-11 with 11:24 to play as two Justin Nabors free throws capped an 8-0 run that saw Dawkins and Currye Todd drain 3-pointers on consecutive possessions. Nicholls slowly clawed back and cut the deficit to 24-23 with just under four minutes to play before eventually closing the half on a mini 5-1 run that gave the Cardinals a 29-28 lead going in to the break. Lamar shot 39 percent and Nicholls was just a hair better at 40 percent. The biggest blow for the Cardinals came with 4:16 on the clock when Matthew Barrow left the game with a right knee injury after being fouled by NSU's Dominic Friend on a fast-break opportunity. Barrow, a senior from nearby Baton Rouge, La., landed hard on his right side and had to be helped off the floor. The teams traded baskets to open the second period before Nicholls took its first lead since early in the first half as Bathie converted a steal and fast-break layup to give the Colonels a 44-43 lead with 10:44 to play. Lamar answered with a 7-0 run that saw consecutive 3-pointers from McThay and Dawkins before a free throw by Sanders. Nicholls again came back to tie the game at 50 with 5:26 remaining. With the score again tied at 55, Lamar got a pair of layups and free throws from Sanders to extend their lead to 61-55. The Colonels cut it to three on three free throws by Anatoly Bose and then tied it at 61 with 41.6 seconds left on a three from Bose in the corner. That was the way it stood going into overtime. Nicholls held its last lead at 66-65 with 3:04 left on an Anatoly Bose jumper. Lamar scored the next three points on free throws by Brandon McThay and Hopkins. With the Cardinals holding a 68-67 lead with 23 seconds left, Dawkins made a huge steal of an inbounds play and was sent to the free throw line where he made both to extend the lead to 70-67. Bathie made one free throw before McThay iced the game with two of his own. He finished with nine points, including 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Lamar will return home to face Southeastern Louisiana (13-8, 5-3) on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Montagne Center. Memorial, Nederland still have shot By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News The games keep passing and nothing is really happening in Districts 21-5A and 22-4A. Just as it was a week ago, Nederland and Memorial are still in the hunt but only have two games remaining. Going into Friday night, Memorial sits in a two-way tie for fourth place with Atascocita at 7-5. The Titans caught a break on Tuesday when Atascocita lost to (2-10) Channelview. Memorial travels to Beaumont tonight to play West Brook, which is in a three-way tie for first place at 9-3 with Kingwood and Humble. While Kingwood, Humble and West Brook are locks for the playoffs, the fourth and final spot all comes down to just a couple of games. After West Brook, Memorial finishes the regular season at Baytown Sterling (5-7) on Tuesday. Port Arthur lost to West Brook in the first half of district but would do itself a great service by winning its final two games. Atascocita, meanwhile, plays Baytown Lee (0-12) tonight and meets Kingwood Tuesday night to finish its regular season. If Atascocita and Memorial finish in a tie, a play-in playoff game would be necessary to decide the final playoff representative of the district. District 22-4A will likely be in an even bigger mess after tonight’s games. While the Dayton Broncos, at 7-5, have a one-game edge over Nederland and Little Cypress-Mauriceville in 22-4A, the Broncos play No. 4 ranked Ozen tonight. Ozen has yet to lose a district game and clobbered Dayton 98-41 in Beaumont in its first meeting with the Broncos. Also in action tonight, Nederland host Vidor, which is in fifth place at 5-7. LC-M, meanwhile, meets Central (9-3) tonight and Port Neches-Groves (2-10) on Tuesday. Nederland finishes the regular season in Beaumont when it takes on the Jaguars. The Bulldogs lost to both Vidor and Central in the first half of district, but will likely need to win each of those games in order to have a chance of making the playoffs.

Eagles to face C.E. King in crucial contest By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published February 8, 2008 The season is on the brink for the Barbers Hill boys’ basketball team. With two games remaining in district, the Eagles are tied with C.E. King at 7-5 for the final playoff spot from District 21-4A. The two teams will meet tonight at 7 p.m. on the campus of Barbers Hill as the postseason, for all intents and purposes, begins for both teams. The winner will clinch a tie for third place, assuming that team takes care of business next Tuesday. A bi-district playoff game against Beaumont Central is on the line. “At this point in the year you want the games to mean something,†Barbers Hill head coach Nathan Toon said. “This is great for the kids. For either program to make the playoffs would be a big deal. “We made the playoffs two years ago but we haven’t made it in Class 4A. Coming into the season we weren’t expected to make it.†In the two teams’ previous meeting at C.E. King, the Eagles dropped a 62-56 decision as they were slowed by a flu bug. This time around, the team is healthy and ready to go as it prepares to face the full-court pressure of the Panthers. “The first time we played them they pressed us, but we didn’t turn the ball over,†Toon said. “We just didn’t hit our open shots.†The Eagles have won three of their last five games with the only losses coming at the hands of Smiley and Crosby, teams that have clinched the top two spots in the district. In Barbers Hill’s most recent game, Brooks Ybarra scored 43 points to lead the team to a 72-61 win over Huffman. Ybarra has continued to grow within the team chemistry after missing the first half of the season with a broken foot. “We’ve had our ups and downs this season but that is part of the norm,†Toon said. “We know this will be a tough game but we will have our home crowd behind us. The community takes a lot of pride in their school and to make the playoffs would mean a great deal.†Barbers Hill will close out the season on the road against Galena Park, which is 6-6 in district. C.E. King will also be on the road against Huffman, also 6-6. In another area game tonight with playoff potential, Sterling will attempt to keep its playoff hopes alive when it travels to Atascocita. The Rangers trail Atascocita’s Eagles and Port Arthur Memorial, the teams tied for District 21-5A’s final playoff spot, by two games with two to play. Memorial will face West Brook tonight and will close out the season at Sterling.
