Lamar Women's Basketball Hosts Nicholls State Thursday at 7 p.m. Lady Cardinals look for bounce back win against Lady Colonels Feb. 6, 2008 BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team looks to improve to 6-1 in Southland Conference play, and get back to their winning ways at home, when they take on the Lady Colonels of Nicholls State at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Montagne Center. At 5-1 in Southland Conference play the Lady Cardinals sit atop the East division and are in a tie for the top spot in the conference, with just one loss with UTSA, UT-Arlington and Texas State. This will be the 24th meeting between Lamar and Nicholls State. The last time the two teams met the Lady Cards got the best of NSU, handing them a 70-52 loss. The Lady Cardinals enter the game with a 12-7 overall record and a 5-1 record in Southland Conference play, on the heels of an 81-74 loss to McNeese State on Saturday at the Montagne Center. Lamar is led in scoring by freshman Tamara Abalde, who is averaging team highs with 16.9 points per game along with 7.6 rebounds per game, while junior Nikki Williams is averaging 13.8 points per game and has a team-high 78 assists and 50 steals. Sophomore Brittney Williams is averaging 13.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while senior Aida Bakhos is averaging 7.7 points 7.4 rebounds per game. As a team the Lady Cardinals are shooting .402 from the field and are averaging 65.7 points per game while allowing 63.8 points per game. Lamar has also controlled the boards this season, out rebounding their opponents 39.4 to 36.2. Nicholls State enters the game with a 5-13 season record and a 3-4 mark in SLC play, on the heels of a 73-69 loss at Central Arkansas last Saturday. The Lady Colonels are led by Katherine Plummer's 17.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while Shelly West is averaging 9.4 points per game. As a team NSU is averaging 60.7 points per game, while allowing their opponents to score 67.9 points per contest. They are shooting .373 from the field, while their opponents are connecting on .414 of their shots. After Thursday's game the Lady Cardinals will be back on the road for a 3 p.m. showdown with Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in Hammond, La.
