Baylor drops to No. 8 in women's hoop poll While Tennessee has Rutgers to thank for its return to No. 1, the Baylor women's basketball team dropped to No. 8 in The Associated Press poll. Baylor fell three spots after losing to then 18th-ranked Oklahoma State Right now, however, Rutgers is Tennessee's No. 1 concern. The Lady Vols regained the top spot after Connecticut lost to Rutgers last week. Tennessee, which was the top-ranked team for the first seven weeks before losing to Stanford in late December, received 45 of the 50 first-place votes. The Huskies received the other five. Now the Lady Vols face the difficult task of hosting No. 5 Rutgers on tonight in a rematch of last season's national championship game. Added incentive for Rutgers this time is the opportunity to become the first team ever to defeat top-ranked teams in consecutive games. "I never thought about it like that," Rutgers forward Essence Carson said. "I thought of it just as the chance to play two great teams, who year after year are always in the race for a national championship." While the Lady Vols are no stranger to the poll, UTEP earned its first-ever appearance in the Top 25. "It's a great feeling. It's a reflection of a lot of hard work and something that didn't happen over night," said UTEP coach Keitha Adams, whose team has won 15 straight games. "No question, it's a positive to be in the mix of the other great programs." It's been a great few days for UTEP (19-2), which has never competed in the NIT or NCAA tournaments. The Miners made their first appearance on national television Sunday, set the Conference-USA record for consecutive league victories, and earned their first-ever Top 25 ranking. Not too bad for a team that was 3-25 a few years back and has never advanced past the semifinals of the conference tournament. Coming off a 20-win season, UTEP has been outstanding with its only two losses at Nebraska and at Kansas State. UTEP has the second longest winning streak in the country, trailing only Chattanooga, which has won 16 straight games. Even with the recent success, the Miners are focused on their next game, a key Conference-USA matchup with Houston on Thursday night. "Today's the only day we're going to talk about being ranked," Adams said. "The bottom line is we know we have to focus on playing Houston." North Carolina remained No. 3 after blowing out then-No. 11 Duke, Clemson and Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels were followed by Maryland, Rutgers, Stanford and LSU. California and Oklahoma are Nos. 9 and 10. West Virginia and Duke flipped places followed by Old Dominion, George Washington and Oklahoma State, which moved up two spots to No. 15. The Cowgirls were followed by Notre Dame, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Utah and Texas A&M. Syracuse, Wyoming, Ohio State, UTEP and Vanderbilt rounded out the poll. The Commodores re-entered the poll for the first time since week 7. Georgia and DePaul dropped out. A close loss to LSU on Sunday ended Georgia's string of 98 consecutive weeks in the poll alive. It was the seventh longest active streak. The Lady Dogs fell out of the Top 25 for the first time since Jan. 20, 2003.

7-on-7 FOOTBALL: Rules changes, schedule set at meeting For Class 5A and 4A schools) • May 17: Manvel and Cy Falls • May 24 and 25: Houston Texans Training Center (two 16-team events hosted by Baytown Lee) • May 31: Cy Creek, Terry and Texas City • June 7: Cinco Ranch, The Woodlands and Austin Lake Travis • June 14: Dulles, A&M Consolidated and San Antonio Alamo Heights • June 21: Lufkin • June 28: Corpus Christi Ray and Hays Consolidated • July 10-12: State Tournament at Texas A&M University in College Station For more information, visit the Web site at www.state7on7.com . Mouthpieces will be mandatory for all players during summer 7-on-7 football state qualifying tournaments and at the July 10-12 State Tournament at Texas A&M University in College Station. That was one of many decisions made by state president Tim Teykl and officials at the State 7-on-7 Board of Directors Meeting on Jan. 23 in San Marcos. "It was a unanimous call on the mouthpieces and we feel really good about it," said Teykl, Terry's football coach and campus athletics coordinator. "It's huge because even though 7-on-7 is for the most part non-contact, there is a lot of incidental contact which can lead to mouth and tooth damage. "We've also formed a committee to look into finding a sponsor for mouthpieces, but that's in the exploratory stages." The 2008 Division I (Class 5A and 4A) South schedule includes May 17 season-opening events at Cy Falls and Manvel, and a 32-team, two-day extravaganza at the Houston Texans training facility hosted by Baytown Lee on May 24-25. Additional area SQTs are at Cy Creek, Terry and Texas City on May 31; Cinco Ranch and The Woodlands on June 7; and Dulles and A&M Consolidated on June 14. "About 90 percent of the state qualifying tournaments are on high school campuses, and that's really a good situation for us," Teykl said. "When colleges run tournaments, there are so many different departments to deal with, so high school venues really work well for 7-on-7." Division II (Class 3A-A) South events present travel time and cost for area schools at locations like China Springs, Hardin, Normangee, Bandera, Cuero, Diboll, La Villa and Navasota. "Division II will stay with 32 teams advancing to the state tournament for at least one more year," Teykl said. "We'll look at increasing it to 64 in the future, like we have in Division I." The complete 2008 schedule, rules and other information can be found at 7-on-7's official Web site www.state7on7.com. "We want to beg and plead with newspapers, Texas Football (Magazine) and other sites that our Web site is the official Web site," Teykl said. "There's so many different sites out there listing old rules and information, and we want to make it as concise, simple and easy as we can for everyone to get the right information, and that's at www.state7on7.com." The 2008 state 7-on-7 board of directors executive committee consists of executive director Doug Stephens (Southlake Carroll), Teykl, vice president Don Byrd (San Antonio Alamo Heights) and treasurer Wayne Hooks. Board members also include south director Dick Olin (Baytown Lee), Don Clayton (Cinco Ranch), Les Koenning, Greg McCaig (Cy Creek) and Mike Sneed (Second Baptist). Members also voted to add one official to state tournament games bringing the total number to four. "We're hoping that eventually trickles down to the state qualifying tournaments," Teykl said. "There's a lot of action all over the field for three officials to keep an eye on." Georgetown defeated Stratford in last year's Division I state championship game, and in the first Division II state finals, Celina downed Crane.

kogt Work began Friday on the stripping of grass from the football field at McNeese State's Cowboy Stadium in preparation for the artificial turfing of the surface. A breaking of the ground ceremony for the new field will be held on Monday, February 18 the same day that construction of the artificial turf is expected to begin. Local businessman Robert Noland supplied the funds. McNeese interim athletic director Tommy McClelland said that the turf will be set aside for fans who wish to purchase a square for a souvenir. Contact the athletic department for more information.
