Report: Pettitte backed McNamee's story by BRIAN COSTELLO, New York Post Andy Pettitte was excused yesterday from testifying against his friend Roger Clemens at a congressional hearing — but it appears Pettitte already has done plenty of damage to Clemens' contention that he never used steroids or human growth hormone. Rep. Tom Davis, the ranking Republican on the congressional committee investigating steroid use in baseball, told Newsday that Pettitte, in his deposition last week, backed up the account of Brian McNamee, the former trainer of Clemens and Pettitte. McNamee has said Clemens used steroids and human growth hormone. Davis told the newspaper that Pettitte's testimony matches McNamee's in most details, but that Clemens, in his deposition last week, said both of them are mistaken. Pettitte asked to be excused from tomorrow's congressional hearing so that he would not have to testify against Clemens, and the committee's leaders granted him his request. They also excused Kirk Radomski and Chuck Knoblauch from the hearing, and Radomski from giving a deposition Tuesday. That leaves Clemens and his accuser, McNamee, in a showdown tomorrow. They will be joined by one new witness, a member of former Senator George Mitchell's staff, Charlie Scheeler. The move to excuse Pettitte, Knoblauch and Radomski came last night after discussions between the leadership of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. A source indicated to The New York Post that Pettitte verified a story McNamee told in his deposition about training at Clemens' home in 2002 with both Clemens and Pettitte. McNamee said that during a break, Pettitte said to him something like, "How come you don't give me the same stuff you give Roger?" indicating Clemens told Pettitte about his human growth hormone use. Newsday reported that Clemens said in his affidavit that he spoke with Pettitte about medications, but not steroids or HGH. One of Pettitte's lawyers declined comment when reached last night. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the committee, and Davis (R-Va.) put out a joint statement announcing the removal of the three witnesses. "Mr. Knoblauch and Mr. Pettitte answered all the Committee's questions and their testimony at the hearing is not needed," the statement read. "Mr. Clemens and Mr. McNamee have also cooperated with the Committee in its investigation." Pettitte gave a deposition to the committee under oath on Feb. 4 that lasted for two and a half hours. Clemens' lawyers said their client will stick to his denial that he ever used steroids or HGH. "I think Andy Pettitte should do whatever is in Andy's best interest and whatever he thinks is best," said Lanny Breuer, one of Clemens' lawyers. "Roger Clemens is going to testify on Wednesday. He'll answer everything truthfully and forthrightly as he's done since the very beginning." The committee can use Pettitte's deposition during the hearing and ask Clemens or McNamee about anything in Pettitte's testimony. It also will be part of the public record of the hearing. Sparing him a trip to Capitol Hill appears to be a sign committee members believe Pettitte cooperated fully with their investigation, and that they do not need any more testimony from him. A source also said Pettitte was not a great witness in that his answers sometimes contradicted each other, and there was some fear of putting him in front of the committee with a national television audience watching.

Online bettors alleged to have exploited scoreboard delay ANTWERP, Belgium -- Three men were removed by organizers at the Diamond Games after they were found to be gambling via laptops from the stands, a spokeswoman for the event said on Tuesday. "Three spectators were removed. The two Russians and one German were holding a laptop and logged on to a gambling Web site were gambling on ongoing matches," said spokeswoman Katia Stroobants. Tennis has been dogged by allegations of match-fixing and illegal gambling in the past year. Several male players have said they were approached to fix matches while betting exchanges have noted irregular patterns. The spokeswoman said those who were asked to leave the Sportpaleis in Antwerp late on Monday were allegedly "exploiting the delay between the time a point was won and the time it appeared on the official tournament Web site." A spokeswoman for the WTA tour said the decision to remove the men was taken after consultations with the governing body. "The WTA takes a zero tolerance approach to this issue," she said. "The men were asked to leave or hand over their laptops and they decided to leave with their computers. Unfortunately we do not have any other powers." The tournament started on Monday with local favorite Justine Henin leading the field. The world No. 1 begins her quest for the title on Thursday.

Boys basketball: Davis hoopsters on verge of playoff berth • What: Davis vs. Washington • When: 7 p.m. Wednesday • Where: Delmar Field House Davis boys basketball coach Matt Johnson says his Panthers have altered their approach this season. After struggling early on, Davis' slogan was "One and Done." Thanks to a recent five-game winning streak, the Panthers have switched it to "One and In." It might be a self-fulfilling prophesy for Davis. The Panthers (13-15, 6-5) only need a victory over Washington (7 p.m. Wednesday, Delmar Field House) to lock up at least a spot in a third-place district playoff against either Waltrip or Reagan. "We're really close to getting in," Johnson said. "Only one more win." Should Davis survive a district playoff, District 19-4A runner-up Jones awaits in a Class 4A-Region III bi-district game next week. Davis kept its postseason hopes alive with a 62-56 victory over Waltrip. Starting center Ishmail Hayes notched 13 points, while guards Scotty Steel and Tim Burroughs added 11 and 10, respectively. A few nights later, Davis' streak ended at the hands of nationally ranked Yates, which crushed the Panthers 100-44. Forward Chris Pruitt was the only player in double figures with 13 points. Johnson attributed Davis' late-season surge to the outside shooting of Steel, who has opened things up for Hayes and Pruitt in the middle. "Scotty has been averaging three 3-pointers per game the last couple of weeks," Johnson said. "When he's hitting from the perimeter, it allows our big guys to be more aggressive." Burroughs and Jerrell Jackson have been consistent performers in the backcourt. All five players are averaging 10 or more points, led by Burroughs and Pruitt with 16 each. Davis hopes to join District 20-4A champion Yates and runner-up Sharpstown in the playoff field. The three teams from District 19-4A are, in order, Wheatley, Jones and Furr.

Titans need win in Baytown in order to extend season By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News If the Memorial Titans beat Baytown Sterling tonight in Baytown, they will have at least a share of the fourth and final playoff spot for District 21-5A. With Port Arthur's loss to West Brook on Friday night, it fell to 7-6 on the season. Fortunately, Atascocita also lost on Friday night and is also at 7-6. Atascocita plays Kingwood tonight. Kingwood is 10-3 and tied for first place with Humble and West Brook. If the Eagles are clipped by the Mustangs and Memorial beats Sterling, the Titans would move into sole possession of the final playoff spot for the league. The other scenarios are not quite as simple, however. If both the Titans and Eagles win, a play-in playoff game would take place on Friday or Saturday between Atascocita and Memorial for the tiebreaker. If both teams lose, it would leave the district with Atascocita, Memorial and Sterling at 7-7. If that happens, a coin flip would pair two of the teams to play on Friday and the third team would receive a bye and wait to play the winner of Friday's game on Saturday to determine which team gets the fourth spot. Obviously, if Atascocita beats Kingwood and Memorial loses to Sterling tonight, Atascocita would move on to the postseason and the Titans' season will be over. However it plays out, the fourth seed of District 21 will most likely meet Deer Park on Feb. 19. The Titans do have a 73-56 victory over Sterling this district season. That victory came in Port Arthur. Jacovin Buckner scored 24 in that game. Memorial, however, travels to Baytown this time and has lost three of its last four games; and the Titans have only claimed three victories on the road in league play this season. Atascocita, meanwhile, has lost its last two games while playing teams with sub .500 winning percentages. Kingwood is well above .500 and the Eagles beat the Mustangs on the road earlier this season. Atascocita has played well against tougher opponents all year, having wins over Humble, Kingwood and Port Arthur. In District 22-4A, meanwhile, the regular season finales for Nederland (6-7) and Port Neches-Groves (2-11) won't have much meaning. The Mid-County teams will only be playing for pride tonight as PN-G has been out of the race for a while and the Bulldogs suffered a big loss to Vidor on Friday night that put them out of the playoff picture. The Bulldogs travel to Beaumont to meet Central tonight while the Tribe will host Little Cypress-Mauriceville. LC-M (7-6) is still very much in the playoff hunt as it hopes to move into a two-way tie with Dayton after tonight's action.
