  1. Restraining order sought against soon-to-be-sentenced Donaghy The estranged wife of disgraced NBA referee Tim Donaghy has asked a Florida judge to issue a restraining order against her husband, who faces prison time for wagering on games he worked. A hearing on Kim Donaghy's request for the restraining order is scheduled for Monday, two Florida newspapers reported on Thursday. Kim Donaghy filed for divorce in September. According to court papers, she accuses her husband of hitting their children, breaking into her e-mail account and threatening to hurt her. Donaghy could not be reached by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and his attorney's office declined comment. The Donaghys are fighting over custody of their four young children and their million-dollar house in Florida's Manatee County. Tim Donaghy faces up to 25 years in prison and up to a $500,000 at his April 18 sentencing in New York on two felony charges stemming from a scam in which he bet on NBA games he worked and gave gamblers inside information, including tips on which crews would officiate games and how the various officials and players interacted, according to court documents. He resigned as a referee in July and pleaded guilty last August to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and transmitting betting information across state lines. Donaghy has been free on $250,000 bond.

  4. Cubs destroy coach's car, then give him brand new SUV Chicago Cubs strength coach Tim Buss felt weak in the knees on Tuesday when players told him to take a look at his car. According to multiple media reports out of Chicago, his 1995 Nissan Sentra was almost unrecognizable after someone or something destroyed it. The windows were smashed, the doors tied closed, the trunk peeled up and the roof punctured. When he saw a couple of baseball bats and balls placed around the car … "I figured [Jon] Lieber, [Kerry] Wood immediately, [Ryan] Dempster …" he said, according to The Chicago Tribune. "Then I realized it was every pitcher we have." Players allowed Buss to fume for a while. The coach was trying to figure out how to tell his wife about her car. "It's a shame," Lieber said, according to the newspaper. "What kind of person would do something like that? It really just shocks me. I'm sure she'll understand." Dempster finally told Buss to take a look at something else in the parking lot. When he walked out, several players handed him the keys to a brand new Nissan Xterra SUV. Almost moved to tears, Buss said, according to the Tribune, "Th
  5. Nederland girls vs. Kingwood Park Traditional bidistrict entry Nederland (16-5-1) should not be lulled into expecting this first-year school to resemble a first-year program. Humble Kingwood Park head coach Dean Herbst served as head coach across town at Kingwood for the past three seasons. The green and white clad Panthers went 11-3-1 and 9-2-1 with a 24-goal scorer sophomore Brooke Harper as the team's lone weapon with more than five goals during the season. "They are a first-year squad but all of their girls play in a lot of club league soccer," Johnson said. "So I'm sure we will want to be at our best. "I'm hoping we will come out with the same mindset that we had in the first 10-minute period of our overtime game against PN-G (on Monday night). That game with Port Neches was as competitive as any we've had."
  6. Lady Indians used to adversity THIS WEEK'S PREP SOCCER BIDISTRICT PLAYOFF MENU By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News There's definitely a significant reason or two why Port Neches-Groves is riding a pleasant wave into tonight's 4A girls soccer playoffs. That's because the Lady Indians have been coping with adversity from day one in this 2008 high school season. It's never been that much of a pat hand for PN-G (16-5) yet a reloading squad of players dealt with it, finishing second in the 20-4A race and improving as the season progressed. Perhaps it starts with PN-G head coach Aimee Bates missing the season's first five weeks on maternity leave. Perhaps it continues with the renovation of Indian Stadium forcing the team to play its home games at Nederland's Prather Field venue. Whatever the case may be, the Lady Indians definitely are accustomed to wearing their white jerseys, hopping on the bus and leaving town to be the home team. That will apply again tonight at Humble's Charles Street Stadium against Huntsville in a 4A bidistrict matchup at 6 p.m. "The girls have done well in spite of everything," Bates said Wednesday as her team wrapped up its preparation for a playoff entry. "I certainly feel like we've progressed very well." PN-G historically has been a high-quality girls defensive soccer team. Offense often has proven to be the Lady Indians' downfall. With 12 goals from Marisa Elam and 11 goals from freshman Natalie Hager, this 2008 squad has been able to blend offense and defense while combining a healthy mixture of freshmen and veterans. PN-G defeated Huntsville 3-1 very early in the season at PN-G's tournament, but that game hardly has mattered in serving as much of a barometer for gauging Huntsville's current squad. The Lady Hornets defeated Montgomery, 3-1, to qualify on Tuesday night as the District 19-4A's third-place representative. The Lady Indians will stay with junior Breanne Martin as goalkeeper. Her 12 shutouts have been very good, including 11 of them in district. Senior Chelsea Smith will anchor the defense at sweeper, supported by junior Brandi Guidry and sophomore Brittany Vigee at fullbacks, junior Chelsea Horn at stopper, junior Alexis Smithy and sophomore Alexis Harper at outside midfielders, seniors Elam and Brittany Ansel at the center mids, with Hager and senior Victoria Williams at forwards. 7. Neumann to interview at La Marque By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND — Larry Neumann told the Port Arthur News Monday that he would talk with La Marque ISD representatives about the Cougars’ head football coaching position later this week. The winningest head football coach in Nederland High School history, Neumann acknowledged that he submitted an application for the position “about a month ago.†Chris Jones resigned after one season at La Marque on Feb. 15. “I think they are definitely in a very preliminary stage of their selection process,†the 56-year-old Neumann said, denying rumors which circulated on Monday that Larry was a finalist for La Marque’s head coaching job. “If I am a finalist in La Marque’s selection process at this point, I am not aware of it,†the Pasadena native said. The Galveston Daily News reported in Sunday’s edition that Neumann was included among 34 head coaching applicants which also included Port Arthur Memorial assistant and former La Marque assistant Phillip Mattingly as well as current Nimitz head coach David Suggs, the former head football coach at both Lincoln and Beaumont Central. A hiring firm of individuals was contracted by La Marque’s school district to contact prospects for the position, according to Neumann. “I haven’t been interviewed yet by anybody,†Neumann said Monday night. “I got a phone call by a committee member who has been asked to be involved in the screening process. They’re supposed to interview me sometime this week in the Houston area. That’s what I know about the whole situation.†Neumann has guided the Bulldogs to a Southeast Texas record 11 straight bidistrict appearances and 10 straight bidistrict victories. His annual salary is listed at $78,000 after 15 seasons. It is believed La Marque greatly would increase that amount but nothing of a financial nature has been discussed with Neumann and La Marque officials as of Monday. “It’s really unique to my knowledge but a group of men have been contracted by the La Marque ISD to be involved in the search and to talk with various coaching prospects,†Neumann explained. “When you reach the stage I’m at, you get pretty selective about the positions which even contain any appeal at all. There are three things about this situation that interest me. Obviously, this is an opportunity that could benefit you financially. “Two other things about it are first, it’s on the Upper Texas Gulf Coast which is where we are and which is where I want to stay. Second, it’s a place where you have a great chance to be successful. We’ve looked into it and we will see what develops.†A graduate of Lamar University, Neumann was most enthusiastic a few months ago when 79 percent of Lamar’s students voted in favor of an activity fee to support the likely return of Lamar football. Neumann talked in casual conversations as if he would be very interested in the opportunity to coach at Lamar. Neumann expected to speak to a committee of at least four people from the hiringfirm later this week.
