kogt The Washington Nationals cut ties with John Patterson on Thursday. Patterson, who has battled various arm injuries over the past two seasons, struggled this spring, going 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in nine innings of Grapefruit League action. "They told me I didn't blow the doors open and that there were other pitchers pitching better," Patterson said. Patterson, 30, was Washington's top starter in 2005, when he went 9-7 with a 3.13 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 198 1/3 innings. But Patterson appeared in just eight games the following year before undergoing season-ending surgery on his right forearm. After battling elbow soreness throughout the first month of the 2007 campaign, Patterson again underwent a season-ending operation. Patterson made just 15 starts over the last two seasons, going 2-7 with a 5.75 ERA over that stretch. He is 18-25 with a 4.32 ERA in parts of six seasons with the Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Astros say they're interested.
