  4. Cougars happy to be CBI host UH welcomes Valpo to Hofheinz for Monday game After surviving a tense opener on the road, the Houston Cougars will play the quarterfinals of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament at home. The Cougars (23-9) will host Valparaiso Monday at Hofheinz Pavilion. Seeded No. 3 in the West Regional, the Cougars traveled to Nevada on Tuesday and defeated the No. 2-seeded Wolf Pack 80-79 in the first round of the inaugural tournament. Valparaiso, seeded fourth, upset top-seeded Washington 72-71 Wednesday night in Seattle, giving the Cougars homecourt advantage. University of Houston athletics director Dave Maggard jumped at the opportunity to play the game at Hofheinz Pavilion, despite the $60,000 fee that comes with hosting it. "The Nevada game was perhaps one of, if not the, best, game of the season for us, especially being on the road and the difficult travel schedule, arriving in Reno at 1 a.m. the morning of the game," Maggard said. "The excitement by our players is still very high and I know they will continue to give an all-out effort to advance to the next level. "The financial commitment to host is very significant. Our fans and alums want a first-rate program, so I feel certain they will come out to support this team Monday evening. I view this as another building block for the continuing development of our basketball program." The CBI semifinals, where the four teams will be re-seeded, will be played on March 26, with the best-of-three championship series starting on March 31. Fans can buy tickets to the game by calling 713-GO-COOGS or by visiting UHCougars.com and clicking the appropriate links. Reserved tickets are priced at $20 and general admission tickets for $15. UH and Valparaiso students with valid IDs can purchase a student ticket for only $5.

  7. Do or Die time for Nederland By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News CROSBY -- It's an established program with a runner-up District 20-4A finish against a first-year school with a third-place District 19-4A status. Therefore, the uninformed observer would tend to select the District 20-4A runner-up -- which in this case is Nederland -- to be the likely winner in tonight's boys bidistrict game in Cougar Stadium at 8 p.m. Now let us fill in the current information about Nederland (16-4-2, 14-2-2) and its novice challenger from Humble Kingwood Park. The Panthers of coach Ryan Smith defeated coach Rob Bledsoe's Bulldogs 4-1 in the season opener for both teams Jan. 10 at the Kingwood tournament. Then there's the angle of being at full strength. Three Nederland starters definitely are out due to injuries and suspensions. Five others are banged up and are coming off very limited practice time. Plus the Nederlanders face a win or go home situation now because they meet Kingwood Park in a winner-take-all situation. It would be understandable if Nederland's sixth-year head coach Bledsoe should bring an umbrella tonight. Because in recent days, when it's rained on Rob, it's poured. "It's been all kinds of fun lately," Bledsoe said sarcastically. "But we're not looking for excuses. I've inserted plenty of players during the season when I could have played my regulars longer, because I wanted our team to be able to deal with situations just like this." A combination of Jake Kemp, Jared Willson and Brent Salenga will comprise Nederland's two forward spots. Junior Tyler Virdine likely will answer the bell though he will play through a stomach virus. If Vidrine should need to take a rain check, senior Albert Clavijo would start at goalkeeper. The four-man midfield combination will be comprised of Hunter Turk on the left outside and Taylor Trahan on the right with Jordan Wagner and either Bay Callaway or Jack Wilson in the middle. Juniors Ryan Washburn and Jordan Landry play the sweeper and stopper posts with Ian Barnett and Miles Lawler as the fullbacks. That group actually encourages the Nederland mentor. It's the depth that greatly concerns him. "There's the main concern, depth," Bledsoe said. "I'm playing guys who don't mind playing but in many cases, I'm going to have to bring up JV guys and have them in backup roles." Kingwood Park starts a freshman (Colby Sias) at goalkeeper and sports three sensational sophomores --midfielder Juan Castillo (No. 10), defender Casen Hunger (No. 7) and forward Lance Draper (No. 11). Castillo scored twice in KP's 4-1 win over Nederland two months ago. "Castillo is the total package," Bledsoe said. "He's the one of the quickest, most-skilled players anywhere."
  8. Lady Bulldogs fall in bidistrict to Harper, KP By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News DEER PARK -- Nederland did a good job of handling Kingwood Park sophomore sensation Brooke Harper until a tie game reached the final 10 minutes. The Lady Panthers' superb 22-goal scorer had been shutout until she scored the night's winning goal with 7:30 left to lift Kingwood Park over Nederland 4-3 in the 4A girls bidistrict soccer playoff round Thursday night at Abshier Stadium. The shot by Harper spoiled an outstanding second-half comeback and really a dominant second-half performance from the Lady Bulldogs who ended their season at 16-6-1 under head coach Julie Johnson. Harper unlocked a 3-3 tie on a breakaway goal for the game-winner. "She's just a true striker," Nederland said of Harper. "They unfortunately got that one goal and she's a good shooter. It was a great game except for the first 10 minutes. "I mixed up our lineup a lot at halftime and we won the second half completely. They had only three scoring opportunities in the second half and unfortunately they converted one." Nederland led in shots on goal, 14-8, but both teams attempted five shots in the first 40-minute half. Kingwood Park had a 3-1 halftime lead and scored twice in the game's first 10 minutes. Thirty-eight minutes into the opening half, Nederland started its comeback from a 3-0 deficit as Lauren Washburn's header followed Lindsey Bombek's direct free kick from about 25 yards out. The Lady Bulldogs completed their uphill climb, tying the game with 14 minutes left in regulation at 3-3 when junior midfielder Megan Melancon followed up a free kick by Bombek. Melancon was instrumental in Nederland's earlier second-half goal, too. She was credited with an assist, setting up Layken Richard in the 15th minute of the second 40 minutes as Nederland trimmed its deficit to 3-2. "It was an outstanding game and I was proud of them," Nederland's coach said. The Kingwood Park girls advanced to next week's 4A area round matchup on Monday or Tuesday against District 18-4A champion Henderson.
  9. Elam's header sparks PN-G to 1-0 triumph The Port Arthur News HUMBLE -- Senior Marisa Elam used her head at just the right instant, knocking home a header for the game's lone goal as Port Neches-Groves advanced to a 4A girls bisdistrict victory, 1-0 over Huntsville, Thursday night. Elam's header followed Brittany Ansel's corner kick in the second half's second minute as PN-G improved to 17-5 and entered the 4A area round next week. The team's leading scorer with 13 goals, Elam turned it into a winning night for the home team at Charles Street Stadium. The visiting squad, Huntsville, ended its season at 13-9 under coach Pres Holcomb. Elam fired a header past Huntsville freshman goalkeeper Chelsea McCracken. That goal enabled Lady Indians junior Breanne Martin to record her season's 13th shutout. The Lady Indians' coach Aimee Bates was pleased to see her team capture a victory but PN-G was concerned about plenty of unfinished business. First, the Lady Indians dominated shots on goal, 28-10. Second, the winners have a bit of history to change. PN-G has captured several previous bidistrict girls playoff wins but never has advanced past the area round. That opportunity will arrive next week when the Lady Indians will face District 17-4A champion Lindale. Officials from both schools will meet today to finalize arrangements. The University Interscholastic League requires the 4A girls area playoff game to be played either next Monday or Tuesday, the 24th or 25th. "I don't feel that lucky about the win," PN-G's coach said. "I feel there were several goals we should have had that we weren't able to score. We had a couple of headers that we should have made off corner kicks." Playing at Charles Street Stadium created a different strategical issue for PN-G because the Humble field contained a wider playing area than virtually any Golden Triangle-area school field. It pointed up different elements of PN-G's game which Bates noticed. "On a scale of one to 10, I would say we were about a seven," Bates said. "We liked the wider field. But we have to go to the outside, and we should have beaten more people off the dribble than we did." Bates' greatest personnel adjustment involved a hamstring muscle pull which sidelined junior outside midfielder Alexis Smithy. Sophomore Jenna Rhame filled in effectively. The PN-G coaches also praised the work of sophomore marking back Brittany Vigee.
  10. Lee romps to first District 21-5A win By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published March 21, 2008 Lee and Port Arthur entered a Thursday matinee 0-3 in District 21-5A and that was the only thing they had in common. Everybody wearing a uniform saw action for the Ganders as they knocked off the Titans 20-2 to pick up their first district win. Cameron Powers worked four innings to pick up the win, giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out one and walking two. Offensively, Lee scored its 20 runs on 11 hits against an error prone Port Arthur team. The blow out turned out to be just what Lee needed as it had to overcome a tough 1-0 loss to West Brook Wednesday night. The Bruins scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. “To get out to the ballpark and get a win after last night is obviously a good feeling for us,†Lee head coach James Hillin said. “We have played well in three of the first four district games, but we haven’t got hits when we need them and we haven’t had any good luck.†Luck was not in the equation for Lee Thursday as Memorial made it easy. The Ganders scored four runs on wild pitches and took advantage of four errors against a Titan team that struggled to make plays on routine fly balls. The first error was committed on a line drive to right field that was misplayed, scoring Jesse Luna as Michael Mahan advanced to third. Luna’s run would be the first of eight in the inning for Lee. Mahan added an RBI triple later in the inning. Powers wasn’t especially sharp on the mound, but was able to get the out when he needed it. The senior gave up two singles in the first but minimized the damage by picking of Paul Ray at second base. In the second inning he walked two batters but was helped out on a double play ball. Lee batted around in the second inning, adding four more runs. Reed Seeley had an RBI double and Luna had the privilege of watching two base runners cross the plate on an at-bat. Hillin started to empty the bench in the third inning but Memorial was unable to stop the bleeding as Lee added eight more runs. The first seven batters all reached safely with Collin Bieschke coming through with a big hit on a two-run double. Port Arthur broke up the shutout in the top of the fourth as Ronnie Sanchez reached on an error and scored. Corey Reel took over for Powers in the fourth and gave up a leadoff triple to Ray, who would score on a sacrifice. Reel retired his last three batters to end the game. Luna finished 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs. Seeley was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs and Denzel Thomas was 2 for 2 with two runs. In Wednesday night’s game, Lee only managed four hits but received a strong effort on the mound by Seeley who went 7 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking none while giving up four hits, two in the eighth. “He’s fun to watch because he competes,†Hillin said. “He doesn’t get rattled and he goes after hitters. I knew he was going to be good but he has been a surprise.†West Brook scored the winning run with two outs in the eighth inning on a base hit that went down the line. Lee had runners on first and second in the sixth and seventh inning but could not get a run across. “They had a good pitcher,†Hillin said. “We just need someone to step up in those situations.†Lee is 5-12 overall and 1-3 in district. The Ganders will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Humble.
