  7. Carnahan, Todd sign with MMI SIGNINGS By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Port Neches-Groves seniors Jon Carnahan and Mitchell Todd signed to play baseball with the Marion Military Institute Tigers just before noon on Wednesday. Carnahan, a 6-2 catcher/pitcher, anchors the cleanup role for the Indians, who are in second place with a 4-1 District 22-4A mark. The Tribe has a 12-4 overall record. Carnahan is hitting .387 for the year and a whopping .429 in league play. He has seven RBIs and 2-0 pitching record with an ERA of 2.50. Todd, better known for his pitching, hits in the five hole for the Tribe. Todd is swinging a .333 average in district and has an overall average of .300. He has 10 RBIs, a 4-1 pitching record with one save and an ERA of 1.27. Todd is the regular Friday starter for PN-G. MMI first met with Carnahan at a McNeese baseball camp. The Tigers invited Carnahan for a visit. While on the visit, the big senior backstop, told MMI coaches about his good buddy Todd. Assistant coach Jake Wells liked what he saw in Carnahan and liked what Carnahan had to say about Todd, so Wells contacted PN-G head coach Jay Stone. Stone said he really liked the MMI coaching staff and was really impressed with everything about the school and its baseball program. "It means a lot to parents, coaches and especially the players," Stone said, "the way the coaches showed their dedication and to personally make a trip down here to sign our kids — it means a lot. "I think Mitch and Jon made an excellent choice. They've had very productive careers as Indians and now they will get to move on and continue playing baseball. "It's great when these kids get an opportunity to further their education and get to play ball at the next level." MMI is located in Alabama and is in the Alabama Community College Conference, which competes in Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Carnahan and Todd both said they were excited to get to play college baseball. Both added that there are a few goals to see through before their senior seasons with PN-G are finished. "Hopefully we finish on top," said Carnahan. "Winning state is the ultimate goal but first we have to take care of district."

  13. Hammond gives Nederland Gamble Game breakthrough By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News For the first time in the history of the event, a player from Nederland is a finalist for one of the James Gamble Awards. That player is Chris Hammond, who, as a Mr. Inside finalist, automatically becomes a member of the team representing Southeast Texas in the 5th annual Port Arthur News/Gamble Award Game Friday night at the Parker Center. Hammond, one of seven juniors on this year’s team, is the smallest of the Mr. Inside finalists. But, like the players who surround him, he is not short on abilities. Gamble said Hammond is not your traditional post player, but is a player who can do a lot to create mismatches for the opposition. "He is more of a swing player," Gamble said of the 6-3 wing who averaged 16.6 points per game this season, as well as seven boards. Hammond scored 18.4 points per game during the District 22-4A season. He was the newcomer of the year in his sophomore campaign, and was a unanimous choice for all-district this season after nailing 66 treys and getting 62 steals in leading the Bulldogs. "We're very proud to have him," Gamble said. "He has a great attitude and a really good work ethic. We have him listed as a post player, but we're going to use him inside and outside. That is a tough role to pick up in a short time but he has a good attitude, is really trying hard and I think he is going to be fine come game time." About being the first player from Nederland, Gamble said, "we're always looking for the best talent and Chris is a very good ball player. "He shoots the ball very well and does a good job handling the ball. He has plenty of potential." Gamble added that Nederland head coach Brian English deserves credit for the Bulldogs’ first entree. "I think you have to credit coach English," the former Lincoln coach said. "We've had kids from Vidor on the team when Brian was at Vidor and now he is at Nederland and we have a Nederland player. "It just goes to show his dedication for developing good basketball players." Hammond said he is honored to be the first Nederland player to get invited to play in the Gamble game and to be a finalist for such a prestigious award. "It's good for Nederland's program," Hammond said. "Maybe people will start to see that we can play basketball here and people won't overlook us anymore because we can play with everybody." Hammond added that it's even more of a pleasure to get to practice and play with some of the great local talent. "It's fun and challenging to be competing with and against the area's best talent," he said. "There are some really good ball players on this team and it's fun to compete with them. We're all working hard and coach Gamble is a really good coach. Everybody listens to him. It should be a really good game.

  19. Oswalt shelled in final start before opening day KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The way the pitching staff has struggled this spring, the Astros can’t afford many outings like Wednesday by ace righthander Roy Oswalt. Oswalt didn’t make it out of the fourth inning, and a late rally by the Astros fell short in a 7-6 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Oswalt allowed five runs (one earned) and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. He was chased after allowing two doubles and a triple during a three-run fourth inning. "Overall it didn't go great," Oswalt said. "My last two starts I've had a little dead arm. My arm actually feels pretty good as far as recovery." In his final two spring starts, Oswalt allowed nine runs (five earned) and 19 hits over 8 2/3 innings. Astros manager Cecil Cooper said he’s not concerned with his ace being ready for his opening day start Monday at San Diego. “He’ll be ready when the time comes,†Cooper said. “Am I concerned? No, but I don’t like to see my ace go out and scuffle for three or four innings.†The Astros lost for the fourth time in their last six spring exhibitions. Houston closes out the Florida portion of its schedule Thursday against the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin. Miguel Tejada had two hits, and Jose Cruz Jr. had a pinch-hit, two-run double to increase his team-leading RBI total to 18. Cruz is hitting .350 this spring to likely secure the fifth outfield spot on the roster. David Dellucci went 3-for-5 with two RBI for the Indians. Asdrubal Cabrera had a solo home run off reliever Dave Borkowski in the sixth. The Astros rallied for three runs in the eighth. Darin Erstad had a RBI double, Hunter Pence drove in a run on a ground out and Humberto Quintero continued to make a case for a roster spot with a run-scoring single through the hole at shortstop. Rafael Perez retired the final three batters in the ninth for his first save. The Astros had three errors in the game, two of which led to four runs.
