  3. Astros release pitcher Woody Williams The Astros released righthander Woody Williams on Saturday and announced Chris Sampson will occupy the final spot in the starting rotation. Williams was placed on waivers with the purpose of giving him his unconditional release, general manager Ed Wade said. Williams, who was to make $6.5 million this season, was 0-3 with an 11.32 ERA in six spring appearances. The Astros also announced that Roy Oswalt, Brandon Backe, Wandy Rodriguez and Shawn Chacon will pitch in the season-opening four-game series at San Diego, which begins Monday.

  7. Awards team comes up short By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News The fifth annual Port Arthur News/James Gamble Awards game certainly did not lack any excitement. The problem for the Gamble team was its lack of size, however. With the 6-7 Mr. Inside finalist Willie Jefferson spending most of his night on the bench in foul trouble, the Awards team was completely outsized and came up on the short end of a 97-94 decision on Friday night at the Parker Center in Port Arthur, sending the Houston Franchize All-Star team home with a win. This was the first time the prominent Lincoln coach, whose name and career inspire the event and awards, had to see his Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside team lose. But with the visiting team having at least three major Division I rectruits on its roster, standing at 6-8 or better, losing by three points was far from a loss. The Franchize roster had 6-10 John Henson, 6-9 Ray Turner, 6-10 Anthony Jones and 6-8 Kelly Lawson. Henson, who has verbally committed to play with the University of North Carolina, led all players with 26 points. Henson had just eight points at the half but between converting points off turnovers from the Awards team and putting up easy put back buckets, the junior threw down 18 in the second half. Henson also brought down 14 boards in the contest, which was the most by any player. The Awards team never rolled over and held leads for long periods of time, however. Gamble’s sqaud was up 92-88 with less than three minutes to go in the contest. The Franchize, which is coached by Port Arthur Memorial’s Terrul Henderson, cut the score to 92-91 when Darius Gardner (of Houston Yates) hit a three with 2:31 to play in the fourth. West Brook’s Donte Lopez added a pair of free throws to give the Awards team a 94-91 advantage but Henson scored to make it 94-93. Then Houston took its first lead, since midway through the fourth period, after Turner hit two free throws to make the score 95-94 with 1:17 to play. That proved to be the decisive point as the Awards team never answered. Gamble’s bunch did have two opportunities to win or tie in the wanning seconds of the contest. The first came when the score was still 95-94. With about 33 seconds left, Breon Johnson, who led the Awards team with 20 points and seven assists, lost the handle while trying to drive through the lane. That turnover caused Gamble’s team to foul, which sent Henson to the line for two. Henson made both to make the score 97-94.
  8. 02:26 AM in High School Football Five strong candidates to choose from By Joshua Buckley | Permalink | Add Comments Now this is a list for La Marque fans to get excited about. After being disappointed with the finalists for the La Marque High athletic director/head football coach vacancy last year, many of the most respected voices of Coog Nation expressed their excitement to me over this year’s five candidates. I must say, I agreed with Coog Nation as soon as I saw the list. This year’s five finalists — Grapevine head coach Gary Mullins, Kimball head coach Darrell Jordan, Nederland head coach Larry Neumann, Nimitz head coach David Suggs and Flower Mound Marcus defensive coordinator Chuck Vincent — are easily stronger than last year’s group of five. That’s not meant to be an insult to Lydell Wilson, Chris Jones and Larry Walker, who were finalists last year. After all, Wilson went on to win a state title with Lamar Consolidated, and I still think Jones, while falling short of La Marque’s lofty expectations, can be successful in the right situation. But unlike last year, I don’t think La Marque can go wrong by hiring any of the five finalists. And for that reason, I think Thursday was a exciting day to be a La Marque Cougar fan. Here’s my breakdown of the candidates: 5. Darrell Jordan – Jordan was a surprise candidate, because he wasn’t on the original released list of applicants for the position. But his 52-29 record in seven seasons at Dallas Kimball shows that he is a good coach. Because I don’t know too much about him, I have him ranked at the bottom of the five finalists. 4. Gary Mullins – Like Jordan, Mullins is another coaching veteran who has a proven track record. He’s gone 49-35 in eight seasons at Grapevine with five playoff appearances. I wonder though if Mullins’ resume can compete against the top two on this list, which is why I rank him fourth right now. 3. Chuck Vincent – It’s funny that Vincent probably would have been the No. 1 or 2 choice last year had he gone through the application process instead of following Bryan Erwin to Flower Mound. This time around, he’ll have a hard time beating either of the top two candidates for the position, because he doesn’t have any prior head coaching experience. That doesn’t mean Vincent wouldn’t be a great fit for La Marque. I was very impressed with him in 2006 and think his personality would be a perfect fit for the Cougar players. I know there are a lot of La Marque fans that would be pleased to see him on the sidelines of Etheredge Stadium next year. 2. David Suggs – There are several members of Coog Nation that are trying to tell others that Suggs should be the favorite for the position. Listening to their arguments, they may be correct. Suggs was a former Cougar assistant under Alan Weddell, so he knows what the La Marque tradition is all about. He’s also a very strict coach, which could be a bonus on the field and in the classroom. I have him ranked No. 2 right now on my candidate list, but I won’t be shocked to see him end up with the job. And if that happens, I think Coog Nation would be ecstatic. 1. Larry Neumann – Ever since I saw his name on the applicants list, I’ve thought Neumann was the favorite for the job. He’s already made a name for himself throughout the state as a disciplinarian and a coach that stresses fundamentals. Both are qualities La Marque needs in order to reach state championship potential again. Plus, if he can have the kind of continued success at Nederland, what kind of dominant teams could he create with the athletes from La Marque? The one negative Neumann may have is price. He’ll definitely cost the most of the five candidates. But if money is not an option, I think he has the best chance to get the job. So what do you think La Marque fans? Who would you like to see wearing blue and gold next season?

  14. LC-M downs Raiders; gets help from Panthers Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — First take care of your own business and then worry about the rest of the district. That formula set up nicely for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears Friday when they first faced the Lumberton Raiders and then got some help from the Beaumont Ozen Panthers. The Bears downed the Raiders 12-6 and then could celebrate news the Panthers took out the Vidor Pirates 5-4 to push LC-M into a first-place tie in District 22-4A. The Port Neches-Groves Indians are also in the three-way tie for first after defeating Beaumont Central Friday, 16-2. It all sets up a nice showdown in Vidor Tuesday when the Bears travel to face the Pirates. Before the Bears could worry about what the Pirates and Panthers were up to, they had to erase a 1-0 lead the Raiders got in the top of the second. It did not take long for these Bears to wake up. The Bears busted open for seven runs in the bottom of the second on five hits and were helped out a ton by three Lumberton errors. Ben Jones helped his own cause with a RBI blooper to left to score Stefan Cloeren who led the inning off getting on base on an error. Two batters later Wade Estes ripped a two-run single to left to make it 3-1 LC-M as Matt Johnson and Jones each scored. Estes and Dallas Brown, who reached on an error, then both came in to score to make it 5-1 as Tim Barry hit his second double of the game. Chad Richard plated Barry with two-out, RBI double to center to make it 6-1. Richard came in to score making it 7-1 when Cloeren hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Jones, who got the win on the mound giving up only two hits and striking out six, led the bottom of the third with a quick-homer over the center field fence to make it 8-1. After an out, Wade Estes got on base after a Lumberton error and Barry came up looking for an unusual hat trick. Barry took a 1-2 pitch from Stephen McDonough to right field for his third double of the night which moved Estes to third. With two down, Richard plated both Estes and Barry to make it 10-1 with a two-run triple. Stefan Leger then made it 11-1 with a RBI single to center. The Raiders would not be run-ruled, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth on two hits and a walk to make it 11-4. Jones was chased out of the game after giving up his first hit of the game. Jones gave up four runs in the game and walked seven batters. Tayler Thompson worked 1 2/3 innings giving up no hits, no walks and he struck out two batters. Leger scored in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Cloeren to make it 12-4. Stephen Maldonado finished the last inning and gave up two runs on three hits. Cody Hussey blasted a two-run shot deep into the night in the top of the seventh to complete the 12-6 scoring.
