Cooper shines again; North gets by South Former Smiley receiver hauls in game-winning TD DeAundre Cooper wanted one last chance to shine on the high school football stage. That's why the former Smiley receiver opted to play in the 2008 Blue Chip Classic at Delmar Stadium on Saturday night. And shine Cooper did. He had two touchdown catches for a total of 122 yards, leading the North team to a 13-12 win over the South. Cooper, who is headed to Prairie View A&M in the fall, was named the 2008 Blue Chip MVP, an honor he shares with former blue-chippers Selvin Young and Brian Iwuh. "This was a fun game to come play in and I am really glad I decided to," Cooper said. "To be on the field with these guys who I have played with and against for so long was really a nice way to end my high school career." A fourth-quarter 73-yard touchdown catch was another good way to end it. With the South leading 12-7, former Smiley quarterback and teammate to Cooper, Darron Guillory hit Cooper in stride. "Once I had the ball, I knew I could take it in for the touchdown," he said. "I was smiling for a few minutes after that one." The South team had an offensive star as well in Milby's Josh Field. He scored both of his team's touchdowns, first on a 9-yard run and later on a 2-yard rush. The North team leads the series 5-3, but this is the first time in three years that the North team won the game. Winning coach Lionell Crawford, from Smiley, said that the game was a great indication of the talent in the area. "These were two good football games and this was them after three days of practice, so I think that said a lot about the kind of talent we had in this game tonight." he said.

[Hidden Content] Texas evens the score with Bayou Bowl win Johnny Thomas returns an INT in the win By Ahmard Vital Texas HS Recruiting Analyst Posted Jun 8, 2008 There were plenty of sacks, interceptions, and hard-hitting action going on Saturday night at Stallworth Stadium for the sixth annual Bayou Bowl. After the performance put on by the Texas team, the Lone Star boys snapped the three-year streak that was held by the Louisiana team. TexasPrepInsider was on hand for the game and talked with Texas coach David Snokhous about the game. At the sixth annual Bayou Bowl Saturday night at the Baytown Stallworth Stadium, all-stars from the state of Texas and Louisiana faced off in what turned out to be a hard-hitting, state-pride representing battle. In the end, the team from the Lone Star State evened the series to three apiece, after a three-year win streak from Louisiana, with a 24-14 win over the Bayou state team. “It’s a good feeling because I thought for a minute we might have lost it, but our kids bounced back and responded well,†Texas coach David Snokhous said. “When you have a bunch of kids out here like this who can play, (he told all of the kids that both teams have equal talent) it comes to the team that makes more plays.†And the play that sealed the deal for the Texas team’s victory was a 12-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Derek McGahee (Clear Creek). But to start off the game it was Louisiana making the initial first noise when Zach Albin (Sulphur, SLU) picked off a pass on Texas first drive. A few plays later Randall Mackey (Bastrop, Ole Miss) connected with high school teammate Edward Patterson (TCU) on a 15-yard touchdown pass. But Texas responded. About a minute and a half later, Braden Smith (Rockwall, SMU) found Darius Bolden (Cy Falls, Texas State) streaking down the sideline. Bolden caught a 43-yard pass and took it in. Louisiana’s Champblain Babin (Donaldsonville, McNeese) got loose on the next drive and put the Bayou team in good field position. But the drive was halted when the Lone Star’s Johnny Thomas (Texas City, Oklahoma State) intercepted a pass on the 3-yard line and returned it passed midfield. After Jeremiah McGinty (North Shore) found Bolden for a first down, McGinty kept the hot streak going when he found Michael Smith (Westside, Connecticut) from 8 yards out for a touchdown. Defensively, both squads held their opponents and kept each other out of the end zone for the rest of the half. Before halftime Michael Littleton (Galveston Ball, Sam Houston) intercepted a pass in the end zone and Louisiana’s Derreck Dean (MC 35, ULL) recovered a fumble. Texas went into halftime with a 7-point advantage, but added to that in the second half kicker Colin Baker (Cy Creek, Colorado) made a 21-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-7. Defense would come through big again for Louisiana when Jamie Payton (Dutchtown, Lambuth) intercepted a Texas pass. The Bayou boys would capitalize when Mackey found Alfred Franklin (Kentwood, JUCO) in the end zone on a 53-yard touchdown. But when it came down to it, the Texas defense came through big in the second half. Along with the McGahee interception, players like Blake Chavis (Beaumont Westbrook, Texas A&M) and Bernard Obi (Pearland, UTEP) harassed the Louisiana quarterbacks with plenty of sacks and hurries. According to Snokhous, it was a total team effort and he tips his hat to a tough Louisiana squad. But, he said there is something about playing football in the Lone Star State. “These kids came to play and Louisiana has great high school football out there and it’s obvious with LSU and the success they have had,†Snokhous said. “And here we are in Texas. I told these kids before we came out here, there’s a reason we are Texas high school football and there is one thing you will be able to walk away and say later on. “You can tell people I played the best high school football in America because Texas high school football is the best. We had to go and prove that tonight.â€

Kyle Busch forced to backup at Pocono after wreck LONG POND, Pa. -- NASCAR points leader Kyle Busch, attempting to run in three national series races this weekend, will start the last of them from the rear. Busch wrecked his car during practice Saturday at Pocono Raceway and had to go to a backup, meaning he will start form the back of the field in Sunday's race. He lost control of his Toyota as he apparently headed toward pit road with just about two minutes left in the first practice session. The car spun down the service road and tagged the inside retaining wall. The crumpled car puttered back to the garage, where his Joe Gibbs Racing crew was already on top of the team transporter pulling out a backup. Busch, who qualified 10th and posted the third-fastest speed of the practice session, briskly headed inside the truck and stayed inside while his crew prepared the new car. Once the backup was race-ready, Busch took it out on the track and posted the 16th fastest speed of the final practice session. His new Toyota is a brand new car that was the backup in Richmond and ran a portion of the test at Pocono two weeks ago. Afterward, Busch sprinted past waiting reporters, entered his hauler, then slipped away through a front door where he was picked up by a waiting golf cart, ESPN's Angelique Chengelis reported. He then went to the track helicopter pad, where he also wouldn't grant interviews. But his crew chief, Steve Addington, said Busch simply got loose. "The car got a little bit loose off [Turn 3] and then he tried to just turn down pit road and spun out and tore the front end up on the car," Addington said. "It was the transition off the [new pavement patch in Turn 3] onto the race track and onto the old asphalt and it just got a little loose on him. He thought he was going to save it and didn't. It was just a mistake, and he's sorry about that." Busch is trying to become the first driver in NASCAR history to race in all three national series at three different race tracks on the same weekend. He practiced and qualified the Cup car at Pocono on Friday, then flew to Texas Motor Speedway, where he finished second in the Truck Series race. He was back at Pocono on Saturday for two practice sessions, then planned to head to Nashville for the Nationwide Series event. He'll be back in Pocono on Sunday, when he'll race for his fifth Cup win of the year. Addington said Busch's attempt at a "Triple Crown" weekend had nothing to do with the accident. "It didn't have a thing to do with this. We came in and had a little time left on the practice clock and we wanted to try to make a change and it freed the car up and it got it loose off the corner there," Addington said. "It wasn't nothing that has anything to do with his racing in Texas, Pocono and Nashville." Spanning all three series, Busch already has collected 10 victories this year. Busch wasn't the only one to lose control Saturday. Clint Bowyer spun in the opening minutes of the second practice session, and Sam Hornish Jr. lost control of his car when it dipped into the grass. Both cars were damaged, but only Hornish needed a backup. "We weren't good in practice all day," Hornish said. "We were trying a lot of different things to make it better. I just got loose going into Turn 1 and lost it. We tore up the front end a bit."
