  3. Mustangs beat heat with eyes on 21-3A prize Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — For 27 years, West Orange-Stark head coach Dan Hooks has manned the sideline. He’s seen state championship teams, two of them, and two state runnerup squads. He’s watched his Mustangs storm to 15 district titles since 1985. He’s watched great talent come and go as his 251 victories point out. As he hits the field for the 28th time as head coach, Hooks, of course, likes what he sees in the Mustangs. “The kids have come in in decent shape, and you’ve got to love that,†Hooks said. “What I really like is the way they’ve reacted as a ‘team†throughout the summer. They had good workouts throughout the summer and they all bond so well together. That tells you a lot about your senior leadership right there.†The Mustangs return six starters on offense and five off a defense that went 11-2 last season. WO-S advanced to the Class 3A Division II Region III semifinals. Since dropping to the 3A ranks in 2004, the Mustangs have yet to drop a district game, winning 24 straight contests. Quarterback Ortavious Hypolite is a key returning figure after he passed for 1,381 yards and 11 touchdowns last year as a junior. Quintavious Garrett returns to his running back slot, where he gobbled up 709 yards and six TDs on just 80 carries behind his older brother DePauldrick Garrett (1,394 yards, 23 TDs), who became WO-S’ all-time leading rusher. “We’ve got some key guys like Ortavious and Quintavious back that know the system well,†said Hooks. “We’ve got a nice group of kids returning on both sides of the ball that knows what it takes and that’s good to have. We’re also going to depend on some young ones that will definitely get their feet wet in a tough non-district schedule.†The Mustangs have been out beating the heat in two-a-days. They had a reprieve Tuesday with the arrival of Tropical Storm Edouard. Wednesday was somewhat cool but Thursday was a scorcher. “This is by far the hottest day yet,†said Hooks. “The kids will respond okay, they always do.†Friday was the first day that the Mustangs could practice in all-out gear. “You always anticipate that Friday because you can go to all of your contact drills,†Hooks said. “Those first four days are kinda scary because everybody is in shorts and T-shirts and you worry about getting a silly injury.†The Mustangs have two scrimmages lined up before they head to old Rival Nederland in their season opener Aug. 29. WO-S will venture to Dayton Saturday with the freshmen and JV teams playing at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m. The Mustangs’ second scrimmage will be at Vidor Aug. 22. “We’ve got a couple good scrimmage tests against bigger schools,†said Hooks. “That will be good for us because as always, we’re only going to suit up about 28 to 30 kids. We’ve got a good little non-district schedule (Nederland, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Kirbyville, Jasper, Brookshire-Royal) that will have us battle-tested when Silsbee rolls in here for district (Oct. 10).†Another nice item for Mustang fans — they’ll have the opportunity to watch six home games for the first time in years. “That’s a great thing,†Hooks said. “It seems like we get maybe four a year for so long and every now and then five. You can thank me for winning the flip against Brookshire-Royal. We were going to possibly play that one in Deer Park.â€

  11. www.texasprepinsider.com Michael Getting Closer to Decision Premium Story Christian Michael West Brook By David Sandhop Publisher Posted Aug 7, 2008 One of the top running backs in the nation is on the verge of making a verbal commitment. Will he pledge to the LSU Tigers or the Texas Aggies? Aggie Websider's David Sandhop spoke to Michael about his school choice With fall practices starting up all over the country for both college programs and high school teams, recruiting has taken a brief backseat for most colleges and recruits as the season approaches with the NCAA-mandated contact period still over three weeks away. That’s especially true for the Texas A&M staff, who have almost completed the 2009 class with 25 commitments in place. However, with a few mid-term enrollees in that group, the Aggies still have room for a couple of blue chip prospects and they don’t get any better than Beaumont Westbrook (TX) running back Christine Michael. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back is chomping at the bit to get started with the 2008 season, which gets underway for the Westbrook Bruins next Monday. “Oh yeah, I’m ready to put the pads on now,†Michael said. “I’m ready to show everybody what I can do and help my team win. I’ve worked harder this offseason than ever before and I feel I’ve gotten stronger, faster, and quicker. I just want to play hard, be humble, and contribute to the team’s success.†As a junior, Michael proved to be one of the state’s best running backs in a state that is known to produce great running backs. However, at the Top Gun Camp in Florida last month, Michael proved to be one of the nation’s best backs garnering widespread praise and chosen as one of the best camp performers at the elite national event. In particular, he surprised observers with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, something that he hasn’t shown on the field in Beaumont. “I’ve always been able to catch the ball. It comes naturally to me I guess,†Michael said. “I was a wide receiver in middle school, so it comes from that as well.†However, before Michael straps on the helmet and pads for the team’s August 29 season opener, the future 5-star running back has a little business to finish in terms of his recruitment. Michael would like to make his verbal pledge before the first game, which means he’s only 2-3 weeks away from his big announcement. “I definitely still want to make a decision before the season starts,†Michael said. “Right now it’s down to LSU and Texas A&M. I’d have to say that I’m feeling LSU a little more right now. Yeah, I’d say LSU for now.†That’s a change from a couple of weeks ago when he named the Aggies as his leader. Michael was scheduled to attend the LSU Elite Camp during that time, but was unable to make the event. “I’ve seen LSU several times so it’s not like I needed to see it again,†Michael said. “I’m just feeling LSU right now.†However, Michael made it clear that anything can happen between now and when he makes his decision. He’s still keeping an open mind to his schools and leaving the decision to a higher source. “I’m still keeping my options open,†Michael said. “I’ve prayed to God every night asking him where he wants me to go, and when he gives me that sign then I’ll make my decision. I’m not there yet.â€

  14. Lady Cardinals ready to test the net Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — It is obvious the first thing that comes to mind when one talks Bridge City Lady Cardinals volleyball is last year’s trip to the regional tournament. The 2007 version of the Lady Cardinals claimed a share of the District 21-3A championship and saw each four of their seniors sign athletic scholarships to play sports in college. So losing that much talent and coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history should worry Bridge City fans, right? Coach Becca Mathews may not know her full varsity roster just yet but she is very excited watching her team grow and improve on a daily basis. “I’m real excited about this group,†Mathews said on Thursday. “They will surprise people this year. All the girls have gotten so much better in just four days of practice.†Mathews has taken a soft approach towards this year’s group when bringing up the past. “I really try not to talk about last year,†Mathews said. “I don’t want this group to feel they are not important because they are. You can say they have huge shoes to fill but at the same time I expect this year’s team to win.†The Lady Cardinals did not lose everything from a year ago. Leading the way is 2007 All-Orange Leader Newcomer of the Year Emily Kosh. Kosh, now a junior, was a pivotal part of the Lady Cardinals’ run a year ago with terrific setting ability. Mathews has four seniors at her disposal in Mallory Guidry, Amy Caillouet, Sam West and Sarah Armand. Also back from a year ago is sophomore Marlee Lopez who gained a ton of experience as a freshman. While the talk of last year has been light, the practice schedule has not been easy for the Lady Cardinals. Bridge City volleyball players go through a tough work out program under Mathews. “We do conditioning for three hours and they played in summer league and put in a lot of open gym hours,†Mathews said. “Everyone has been here and they actually have liked the practices. They love it. The point of all that conditioning is you are ready when a match goes into a Game 5.†Mathews cannot guarantee another district title or long playoff run but she can promise the Lady Cardinals are going to work hard at getting better. “I can guarantee we will be better every week,†Mathews said. “The girls are going to touch a volleyball six days a week from here on out and that is going to make us better right there.â€So is another district title in the works? “Our district is no different than last year, it is tough,†Mathews added. “The other two playoff teams (Silsbee and Hamshire-Fannett) seem to be even stronger this year. The others are so scrappy and a few took us to five games last year. It is going to be a battle twice a week. The Houston Chronicle called and asked me to place all the teams and I would have no idea to rank the teams in our district.†However the Lady Cardinals end up this year, fans can expect a hard working team which is prepared for anything.
  15. WOS Didn't. Don't think the other Orange County Schools did either.
