  2. Van Gundy dismissed as Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy was dismissed as Rockets coach on Friday, less than two weeks after the Rockets' first-round loss to the Utah Jazz. After initial ambivalence about returning to the team as coach, Van Gundy had made his desire to be back clear. The Rockets, however, had already begun an extensive interview process with former Kings, Warriors and Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman who is considered the only candidate to replace Van Gundy. Van Gundy had told the Rockets that he would not object to the team looking into its coaching options. On Thursday, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey offered Van Gundy another position with the team, expected to be in a consulting role. Van Gundy has turned down that role. Van Gundy was 430-318 in 11 seasons as an NBA coach, 182-146 in four seasons with the Rockets. He has a 44-44 postseason record, losing in the first round to the Lakers in 2004, the Mavericks in 2005 and the Jazz this season. Their trip to the 2004 post season was their first since 1999. The Rockets' 52-win season this year was their best since 1996-97

  8. [Hidden Content] Lamar golf tied for 8th after first day SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Lamar University's first day at the Rich Harvest Farms golf course in Friday's opening round of the NCAA Central Regional should have required a truckload of Excedrin and a couple of gallons of Pepto-Bismol after it was over. Despite the blue clouds, emerald green surroundings and the nearby farms with summer corn just sprouting above the soil, play on the course proved an ugly counterpart to the spring scenery. Only one team out of the 27 competing at the regional, the University of Louisville, finished at less than 15-over par, and only four players out of 140 shot a round under par on Friday. In addition to the skinny fairways, punishing rough and greens that played like a pool table, not helping matters for Lamar were a steady wind and rust from a nearly 30-day layoff. That all added up to a plus-25 showing in the first round. When the Cardinals completed their final shots, they sat outside the top 10 in a tie for 13th, but as other teams wrapped up in the late afternoon, they moved into a tie for eighth. Louisville leads the way at 6-over, and the University of Texas is second at 15-over par. The top 10 teams from this three-day regional advance to the NCAA Championships in Williamsburg, Va., on May 30 to June 2. "I knew we were rusty, and it was just really poor golf on our part," Lamar coach Brian White said. "The course was rough, especially with the wind blowing at 25 mph and the greens firmed up. We thought the morning group had the worst part. We ended up having the worst part because the greens were so firm. The golf course is a course where good shots aren't necessarily rewarded, but bad shots are punished." While four of the five Lamar golfers shot 80 or worse, junior Dawie Van Der Walt was one of those rare golfers under par. He finished with a 1-under 71 putting him in a tie for second and one shot back of Louisville's Derek Fathauer. The day might have ended strong for Van Der Walt, but it didn't start that way, especially on hole No. 8. On the third hole, the Lamar junior's chip shot shuttled across the greens, on the back side of a sloping hill and into a bunker. He managed to save par, but couldn't avoid a bogey on the next hole when his long putt hit the lip of the cup and went left. Fortunes looked brighter when he birdied two of the next three holes, but on the eighth hole, Van Der Walt hit his approach shot into the water. After moving up a couple yards to re-hit, he nearly got it wet again. He ended No. 8 with a 15-foot putt for double bogey. The Cardinals top golfer regrouped and would play mistake-free after that, finishing with a pair of birdies on the back nine. "Luckily, I've been in that situation a couple of times before," Van Der Walt said. "I just had to do some damage control, make sure I got a six and not a seven. I had a good putt to make a six. I can always get it back and make a birdie elsewhere." Lamar will attempt to tackle the course during a second round today that should see warmer temperatures and lighter winds. "We will play much better tomorrow," White said. "We can't shoot any worse than that. That's as bad as we can play."

  12. Van Gundy given a third option Rockets offer non-coaching position, though he could return to bench The Rockets offered Jeff Van Gundy a job on Thursday. It was not necessarily to be their coach. While still holding out the possibility that he might return as coach, the Rockets made it a bit easier for Van Gundy to leave the bench, offering him a different position within the organization. Rockets general manager Daryl Morey would not specify what position he offered after many talks Thursday with Van Gundy. Van Gundy has not accepted or turned down that position. "I've been actively on the phone with Jeff," Morey said. "Constantly. Things are in a tentative spot. We have no conclusions. Things can go in different ways. We're in discussions. There are no conclusions." Morey and Rockets owner Leslie Alexander have spoken extensively with former Kings, Warriors and Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman about the head coaching position but said Van Gundy could be back in that capacity. Morey would not comment about Adelman or whether there are other potential candidates, but a person with knowledge of the Rockets' decision-making said Tuesday that no other interviews were scheduled or planned. Van Gundy said Wednesday that the decision was solely the Rockets', indicating that despite some ambivalence immediately after the team's first-round playoff loss to the Utah Jazz, he had decided he would like to return. Morey on Tuesday had described the decision as mutual. If the Rockets were not clear then about Van Gundy's preference, Morey said they are now. "We have a clear understanding of what we — Jeff and I — want," Morey said. "Some of my active calls have been to clarify things." Though Morey had indicated conditions under which Van Gundy would want to return and the Rockets would want him back, he said Thursday that "recent discussions have changed the understanding." Morey would not comment beyond that about the content of the discussions. After discussing his status with the Rockets as part of Wednesday's announcement that he would work as a playoff analyst for ESPN and ABC, Van Gundy had deferred comment to Morey or Rockets owner Leslie Alexander. Van Gundy is 430-318 (.575) in 11 seasons as an NBA coach, the best career winning percentage of any of the Rockets' 10 coaches. His 182-146 (.555) record as Rockets coach is second only to the 503-397 (.559) mark of Rudy Tomjanovich. "Nothing is settled," Morey said. "We're hoping to move this along toward a settlement with all parties. The sooner we come to a resolution, the better for the Rockets, obviously, but we're not going to rush. "We have a high regard for Jeff, and I think he has a high regard for us. We're both trying to respect the process."

  14. Needville sinks Bridge City in Game One Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader MONT BELVIEU — Bridge City second baseman Troy Bolton was quick to point out the Cardinals' problem Thursday in their Game 1 loss to the Needville Bluejays. "We were not mentally prepared one bit," Bolton said after his team's 4-3 loss at Barbers Hill High School. "Something else was on a lot of people's minds and it wasn't just who we would play next round. School gets out soon and then there is graduation. People need to realize we are still playing baseball and need to realize it soon." The Cardinals (23-6-1) allowed the Bluejays (22-8) to come all the way back from a 3-0 deficit after the third inning to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Game 2 of the series will be at 7 p.m. tonight back at Barbers Hill High School. Game 3, if necessary, will also be at Barbers Hill High School at 1 p.m. Saturday. Needville scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth after Rikky Salazar led the inning off with a walk off Bridge City starter Jeff Stringer. Bridge City then went to freshman Matt Hicks to relieve Stringer and Needville's Mike McGuire quickly laid down a bunt to move Salazar to second. Pinch hitter Bradley Porras then ripped a single to center in front of Bridge City's Johnny Dishon. A play at the plate was then set up with Salazar charging for home. The throw home was in time and Bridge City catcher Casey Jackson's tag was also on target but the ball just squirted out his glove allowing Salazar to score the winning run. "We just didn't play well and I am not exactly sure why," Bridge City Coach Billy Bryant said. "It is a simple game and if you don't play well then you don't give yourself a chance to win. We give them credit because they did what they needed to do to win the game." The first three innings were all Bridge City as the Cardinals built on a 2-0 lead in the third off a home run by Jackson with one down. Jackson's blast cleared the right field fence with one down off Needville starter Kolbie Hajdik. Bridge City had scored in the first inning as Dishon reached after Bolton led the game off with a walk. Dishon hit into a fielder's choice and took second on a stolen base. Hicks then came up with a big RBI single to left scoring the speedy Dishon giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals scored again in the top of the second as with one down Stringer singled to center and courtesy runner Jaden Dillon stolen second. Then with two down, freshman Joe Robertson picked up a RBI with a single to left scoring Dillon from second giving the Cards a 2-0 advantage. From that point on Hajdik settled down and did not allowed the Cardinals to score again. Hajdik worked all eight innings and gave up nine hits with three walks and seven strike outs. Stringer meanwhile, gave up four runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strike outs. "Physically we did not play that bad of a game but it could have been a lot better," Bolton said. "Things just quite did not go our way. They now have the momentum going into tomorrow and I am not even sure how they are going to come out and play. I just know we better come back here tomorrow and be ready to play." Needville started to chip away at the Bridge City lead in the bottom of the second as McGuire hit a one-out infield single. Janacek then moved McGuire to third with a sacrifice bunt and Kody Neel did the rest with a RBI single to center making it 3-1 Bridge City. The Bluejays were not done as in the bottom of the third as Ryan Stack singled to right with one down. Stack quickly stole second and Trey Porras brought home Stack with a RBI single to right making it 3-2 Bridge City. Then in the bottom of the fourth, McGuire led off with a single to right field and moved to second when Cameron Janacek walked. Kody Neel then advanced both runners with a nicely placed sacrifice bunt for the first out of the inning. Todd Roberson then stepped up to the plate and the Bluejays went to the squeeze play to score McGuire. Roberson laid down a perfect bunt and by the time Stringer gloved the baseball, McGuire was just a few feet from the plate and made it 3-3 Bridge City. "Hopefully we come back and play to win," Bryant said. "We need to come here and play the game a lot better than we did tonight."
