2007 Southland Conference Hall of Honor Class Announced Lamar’s Paul Zeek and McNeese State’s Louis Bonnette and Robert “Bob†Hayes May 15, 2007 - 4:04PM FRISCO, Texas — One worked at McNeese State University for 29 years, another for 35 at Lamar University and a third is still going near the conclusion of his 42nd year at McNeese State. The three, which have combined to work 104 years at the two institutions, have definitely earned their spots in the Southland Conference Hall of Honor. Lamar’s Paul Zeek and McNeese State’s Louis Bonnette and Robert “Bob†Hayes have been chosen to represent the 2007 class of entrants into the Southland Conference Hall of Honor. Induction ceremonies are scheduled for May 31 in Galveston, Texas, at the San Luis Resort Spa & Conference Center. The trio will join 27 others inducted since the Hall of Honor was established in 1999. “These three gentlemen represent another exemplary and well-deserving class of inductees for the Southland Conference Hall of Honor,†league commissioner Tom Burnett said. “Paul Zeek, Louis Bonnette and Bob Hayes mean so much to the history of the Southland Conference, and their rightful enshrinement makes the Hall a much more prestigious group. This will be a very special ceremony for everyone involved in the Southland Conference.†Zeek, who retired from Lamar after 35 years as an athletics staff member, took his first position with the university as athletics trainer in 1971. He retired in 2006 as associate athletics director, assisting in the running of the day-to-day operations of the entire department. In his first position as trainer, while taking care of Lamar’s student-athletes and being proactive in preparing student trainers for professions in the field, Zeek established a long history with the Texas Medical Association. There, he served on the sports medicine committees as one of the longest-serving members and learned the skills that made him a master in his chosen profession. After almost two decades as LU’s trainer, the 1998 inductee into the Cardinal Hall of Honor was named Director of Compliance in 1990 and later added the title of Associate Athletics Director. In his last role at the university, he oversaw compliance, scholarships and day-to-day administrative affairs of the department. Zeek was a 1989 inductee into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame and is also a member of the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. In 1988, he received the Frank Medina Award presented by the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association and in 1981 was named National Trainer of the Year by NATA. Bonnette just completed his 42nd year as the Sports Information Director and is also the Senior Associate Athletics Director at McNeese State. A native of Pineville, La., Bonnette is also a past president (two terms) of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and has been the recipient of the LSWA’s Mac Russo Award. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the LSWA and has been inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, in the sports journalism division. Bonnette is also a member of the McNeese Hall of Fame which he founded and serves as its chairman. Only five other SIDs nationally, just one who remains active, have served longer in the profession than Bonnette has worked at McNeese. His ongoing streak of working at 458 consecutive Cowboy football games is tops all-time among all College Sports Information Directors of America members. A 1963 graduate of Louisiana Tech, Bonnette has won dozens of state and national awards for writing, media guides and game programs. Hayes served McNeese and the Southland for 29 years after joining the Cowboys as track coach in 1967. He took over as Athletics Director in 1987, a position he held until retiring in 1996. Hayes was a four-time SLC Cross Country Coach of the Year after producing four team champions in the sport. One of the top track and field coaches in the nation, Hayes took the McNeese program to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, including helping construct the first track on campus. Hayes’ athletes earned five SLC individual cross country titles, six outdoor track scoring titles, four SLC athlete of the year awards and a total of 34 SLC championship gold medals. During his tenure as athletics director, McNeese posted eight conference titles and participated in five NCAA postseason tournaments in various sports.

Five Players Sign Letters of Intent to Play Women’s Basketball for Lamar Lady Cards ink four junior college and one high school player Drew Lacy-Lamar University Assistant SID May 15, 2007 - 4:07PM BEAUMONT – Nikki Williams, Ashley Crawford, Emily Spickler, Agnija Reke and Brittany Hendrix have signed a national letters-of-intent to continue their education and play women’s basketball at Lamar University, announced Head Coach Larry Tidwell Tuesday afternoon. Williams, a 5-6 guard, played two seasons at Copiah Lincoln Community College after completing her high school career at White Castle High School in White Castle, La. She was the driving force for the Lady Wolves, who posted a 30-5 record, won the Region 23 championship and finished sixth at the NJCAA tournament. She averaged 14.3 points, 3.2 steals, 2.8 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game, earning first team All-America, first team all-state, first team all Region 23 and was named to the Region 23 all-tournament team. Williams also had a strong senior campaign in high school, leading White Castle to a 29-5 record while earning class 1A most valuable player honors as well as being named the MVP of the state tournament. She averaged 17.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, six assists and four steals per game as a senior. “Nikki is just an all around good player,†said Copiah Lincoln head coach Gwyn Young. “She scores, she rebounds, she’ll pass out assists, is very competitive and she knows how to win. She is a leader and a very good player.†Crawford, a 5-5 point guard, played one year at Trinity Valley Community College, where she averaged seven points, five assists, three steals and 1.3 rebounds per game for the Lady Cards. Prior to Trinity Valley, Crawford was a three year letter winner at Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas. As a senior at Horn, Crawford averaged 8.3 points, five assists, two rebounds and 1.3 steals per game and helped her team to the playoffs after missing the majority of the season due to an injury. As a junior, she averaged 17.8 points, five steal, four assists and four rebounds per game and led her team to the third round of the playoffs. She was named all-district, all city, and all-region as a junior and senior. In her sophomore season, Crawford led the school to their first playoff appearance and win in school history in any sport. “Ashley is a very good ball handler and a floor leader,†Trinity Valley head coach Mike Landers said. “If I could sign 10 more players just like her, I would be very happy. She brings 100 percent to the floor everyday.†Spickler, a 5-10 shooting guard, played two season at Carl Albert State College in Poteau, Okla., where she averaged 9.8 points 3.2 rebounds, rebounds, 1.1 steals and one assist per game as a sophomore. She led the nation in free throw percentage, knocking down 90 percent from the charity stripe, and was second in the nation in three point shooting percentage at 49.2 percent. Spickler played her high school career at Salina South High School in Salina Kan., where she averaged 15.2 points and six rebounds per game, while shooting .446 from the field and .360 from behind the three point arc. She garnered first-team all-conference honors, KBCA first-team 5A honors, Wichita Eagle class 5A honors and was named to the Salina Journal all-area and county team. Reke, a 5-10 guard, started 30 of 34 games for Odessa College last season, helping the Wranglers to a 32-2 overall record, a 13-1 conference record, the Region 5 championship and the NJCAA national championship. As the starting point guard, she led the team in assists and assist to turnover ratio. She played her freshman season at Carl Albert before transferring to Odessa. “Agnija is a tremendously hard worker and her upside is amazing,†Odessa head coach Nate Altenhofen. “She has the potential to be an all conference player, and Lamar University and the Southland Conference are lucky to have her.†Brittany Hendrix, a 5-11 small forward, played for DeSoto High School, where she averaged 10 points, seven rebounds, four steal and 2.5 assists per game. She helped her team to the regional finals and a 32-2 record on the year, earning first-team all-district and first-team all-region honors. “I think the main things we addressed with this signing class are athleticism, speed and quickness and the ability to become a very good transition team while also playing intense defense,†Tidwell said. “Scoring ability off the dribble and from behind the three point line is also evident from this class. With the ability of these five players and Trashanna Smith, combined with the seven holdovers from last year, workouts are going to be very competitive.â€

DEI hit with big fines, Junior docked 100 points CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- For a change, crew chief Tony Eury Jr. and not driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is making big news. Earnhardt Jr. Eury on Tuesday was fined $100,000 and suspended for six weeks after NASCAR discovered the rear wing mounts on the famous No. 8 were illegal before Sunday's Nextel Cup race at Darlington Raceway. Also, Earnhardt's team was docked 100 championship points to drop him from 12th to 14th in the standings and Dale Earnhardt Inc. owner Teresa Earnhardt was docked 100 owners' points. Dale Earnhardt Inc. will appeal, team president Max Siegel told The Associated Press. "We are not disputing the ruling," Siegel said. "But we are appealing the severity of the penalty because the penalty itself is not spelled out in the rule book." Eury was allowed to replace the mounts before the race and Earnhardt was allowed to keep his 21st starting position. He finished eighth. The penalty was another sign that NASCAR will not tolerate cheating. Crew chiefs Kenny Francis [Kasey Kahne] and Robbie Reiser [Matt Kenseth] were fined $50,000 and suspended for four races each after failing post-qualifying inspection at Daytona. Their drivers were docked 50 points each. Michael Waltrip was docked 100 points and his crew chief and competition director suspended indefinitely after an illegal substance was discovered in Waltrip's car prior to qualifying for the Daytona 500. The penalties against Earnhardt's team were the first major infractions passed out involving the Car of Tomorrow. NASCAR confiscated the wing mounts on Saturday before the race was postponed until Sunday due to rain. Eury called it an "interpretation." "It was a bad deal," he said after the race. "It was a part that got put on there that shouldn't have. We've done a lot of offseason testing for NASCAR. There's been three different styles of brackets on there and it just happened to be one of those old-style brackets." Eury said the brackets were the same ones that weren't discovered during pre- or post-qualifying inspections. "It fit all of their templates," he said. "It just had a problem when you put [the angle] to where you should have." Eury said he tried to explain how to fix the problem to series director John Darby and that it was not done on purpose. Earnhardt, who on Thursday became the most famous free agent in NASCAR history when he announced this would be his last season for DEI, offered to pay the fine. "Whatever he needs me to do," Earnhardt said. "I don't really know what he was trying to accomplish there. We still ran all right with the stock positions."
