So the city is all that matters to recruits now? Do you think Chuck's stance on recruiting juniors is a good idea?
-
This isn't going to end well for Chuck and the Stronghorns. [Hidden Content] Every high school football player who visits Texas this weekend as part of the Longhorns’ “junior day†recruiting weekend should understand what new coach Charlie Strong is looking for. “I want smart guys. I want tough guys. And I want dependable guys,†Strong told the American-Statesman this week, detailing his recruiting philosophy. “Smart, tough, dependable. That’s what I’m looking for. “Is he going to be able to learn what we ask him to do? Is he going to be able to go across campus, and will he be successful academically here?†Strong added. “Is he tough? When we talk about toughness, is he going to go through this program where it’s a mental game, a physical game? Can he withstand that?†Then, Strong reiterated his final point, which speaks to a player’s character. “Just look at the attention you get here,†Strong said. “Is he a guy that once the lights turn off, is he a guy that we can really depend on?†Strong touched on a number of key recruiting points as his staff prepares to host 75-100 players. Mack Brown assembled most of Texas’ 2014 recruiting class. The 2015 class is all on Strong. Strong outlined how his coaching staff evaluates players. First, new director of player personnel Mike Giglio assembles the information and video. Then the player file is turned over to the assistant coach responsible for that player’s hometown. If the first assistant coach likes what he sees, he goes to that player’s position coach. If the position coach likes what he sees, it’s on to the offensive or defensive coordinator. If the coordinator gets excited, all three coaches go to Strong for an in-depth film session. If Strong gives the final nod of approval, the head coach himself makes the call to offer a scholarship. So when a player is offered a scholarship, that means four Texas coaches gave a thumb’s up. “I want enough eyes on that guy so that if he ends up being a bad player, it doesn’t fall back on (one staff member),†Strong said. •Brown routinely used junior days to reel in numerous new commitments. Texas fans shouldn’t necessarily expect the same from Strong. Strong said he will accept an early commitment from a high school junior in certain cases. But he still wants to see some senior film on that player, too. That player must hold up his end of the bargain, Strong said. In some cases, the player makes an early commitment and essentially shuts down on his high school coach, Strong said. The player gains weight, maybe doesn’t work out as hard and stops developing. “If I do take one early, I’m going to let him come up with his parents and his high school coach, and we sit down and talk about it,†Strong said. “Everybody is in agreement that he’s going back to that high school and be the best player that he can be. Don’t worry about the University of Texas, because No. 1, you’re not here yet.†Early commitments are somewhat of a phenomenon in this part of the country, Strong said. In the SEC and ACC, players usually wait until their senior years to commit. “Usually, the kids on that side of the Mississippi, that’s what they do,†Strong said. “Now, you take this side, they all want to commit early. But where are all the championships being won right now? Let’s not be in a hurry to say, ‘Let’s go take this kid.’ †“Never will we ever go behind the coach’s back to offer a young man. But if he says, ‘No, coach, he’s not ready yet,’ then I’m going to take that to heart and say, ‘OK, coach, you call us when he’s ready.’ Coaches have the right to essentially cut a player they deem unfit for their program, although most don’t because of the PR backlash it causes. Strong said his players can lose their scholarship if they break one of his five core values — honesty, treating women with respect, no drugs, no stealing and no guns — or by becoming academically ineligible or by breaking university rules that lead to expulsion. “I don’t want to ever be in the business where we take a kid and it doesn’t work out in the second year and we … that’s our fault,†Strong said. “If that happens, that’s on us. At the end of the day, you’ve got to get him an education. We saw him. We thought he was a good player.†“Mainly, I’d like to eyeball them and I want to sit down and talk to them, if we think these guys are one of the guys,†Strong said. “I want to see what his goals are, what he’s looking for in a school and see what his parents are thinking.â€

Texans First-Round Draft Pick
PhatMack19 replied to eagleswoodville#1's topic in Professional Sports- NFL, NBA, MLB, Etc
From a tsip NFL agent on the combine: It's been a bit stunning - many scouts and team personnel are in love with Manziel. Several high level guys have talked about him as a once in a lifetime type prospect. No buzz about anyone else - just Johnny. Most expect the Texans to draft him. -

Over/under JFF's 40 time is 4.55 seconds Clowney is the same You can actually bet on this stuff. Addidas is also paying $100k to the fastest 40 time by a player wearing their shoes. That's worth a shot if you are fast. -

Jacksonville and Cleveland both need a face to their franchise. One of them may pay to get a chance at Johnny. If Houston can get both of Cleveland's picks, the have to trade the #1 IMO. -
So I'm guessing Gabe disagrees with his boss?

No Texas A&M Spring Game until 2016
PhatMack19 replied to PhatMack19's topic in College Sports Forum
The game will still take place and recruits will still be able to attend, it will just be private without fans in attendance. Normal spring game for A&M attracted 40,000+ fans. It's not that big of a deal for the players, although it does look better for the recruits to have a practice game in front of 40k on national tv. I guess Sumlin will have to pull out some extra gadgets for the next few years. -
They applied for a waiver to have the game offsite and was denied by the NCAA. What a joke. I can't think of a better reason to grant the waiver than your field not being usable. Somehow they let Ohio State play at the Bengals stadium last year when they were redoing part of their stadium. The NCAA doesn't make much sense. [Hidden Content]

NFL Expert: Johnny Manziel almost undraftable!

"It would be the worst decision they've ever made," he says, smiling. "I'd be in the same division playing against them twice a year. Sorry, but you just turned that chip on my shoulder from a Frito into a Dorito." [Hidden Content] -

The guy was on Cowherd yesterday and He's full of crap. He forgot to mention that at the end of the Mississippi State game, Johnny hit his thumb on a helmet throwing a pass. He was wearing a cast the week leading up to the LSU game. I've jammed by thumb before and I couldn't even wipe much less throw a football. The guy is just trying to get his name out there. -
I don't know if a 1 loss Big 12 Champion gets in over a 1 loss SEC team that didn't win conference ala Alabama this year.
-
@mikefinger: So the final UT football coach tally for the next four years: $20.6 to Strong, $4.375 to Louisville, $4.75 to Mack. That's $7.4M/year.

Comcast to Buy Time Warner Cable

If they combine they will own 33% of the market. I don't know if the monopoly lawyers will allow that. -

I've heard really bad things about Comcast. On the bright side we will now be able to watch the Astros and Rockets on CSN. That doesn't really help me much with Direct TV though. -
quote: Defensive Substitutions The committee also recommended a rules change that will allow defensive units to substitute within the first 10 seconds of the 40-second play clock, with the exception of the final two minutes of each half, starting with the 2014 season. “This rules change is being made to enhance student-athlete safety by guaranteeing a small window for both teams to substitute,†said Calhoun. “As the average number of plays per game has increased, this issue has been discussed with greater frequency by the committee in recent years and we felt like it was time to act in the interests of protecting our student-athletes.†Under this rule proposal, the offense will not be allowed to snap the ball until the play clock reaches 29 seconds or less. If the offense snaps the ball before the play clock reaches 29 seconds, a 5-yard, delay-of-game penalty will be assessed. Under current rules, defensive players are not guaranteed an opportunity to substitute unless the offense substitutes first. This part of the rule will remain in place in scenarios where the play clock starts at 25 seconds. The committee discussed the issue thoroughly before coming to the conclusion that defensive teams should be allowed some period of time to substitute. The committee believes that 10 seconds provides sufficient time for defensive player substitutions without inhibiting the ability of an offense to play at a fast pace. Research indicated that teams with fast-paced, no-huddle offenses rarely snap the ball with 30 seconds or more on the play clock. This rules proposal also aligns with a request from the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports that sport rules committees review substitution rules in regards to player safety. In the NCAA’s non-rules change years, proposals can only be made for student-athlete safety reasons or modifications that enhance the intent of a previous rules change.

Joe Schad â€@schadjoe 8m NCAA football rules committee proposes offense can't snap the ball until play clock reaches 29 seconds or less. Would reduce total plays. The NCAA and their dumb rules are getting annoying. I screamed at the TV multiple times last year over targeting calls in games I didn't even care about because it's a BS rule. Leave the game alone or let them play flag football and see how much money the NCAA loses.

I would replace Texas with Ohio State. Those 4 teams will be at the top of everyone's list. OU will also be in the running.

I guess it all depends on how close he wants to be to his dad and if the brothers want to go to the same school. TCU- 1 hour Baylor- 2 hours College Station & Norman- 3 hours Austin- 3:45 hours

I'm just glad for the recruits sake that you don't know how to Twitter! 😄
