By GARY STALLARD The Lufkin Daily News Saturday, August 30, 2008 KIRBYVILLE – A fantastic finish wasn't enough to overcome a stuttering start, leaving the Diboll Lumberjacks with a season-opening 36-28 loss to Kirbyville Friday at Wildcat Stadium. Diboll scored twice in a four-minute, fourth-quarter span, pulling to within a touchdown and two-point conversion of the Wildcats; this after spotting Kirbyville a 28-7 lead early in the third quarter. Lumberjack quarterback Jacolby Spencer, who threw for more than 300 yards and a pair of scores, hit Trey Loche for a 53-yard catch-and-run with 7:50 left to play; then tossed a short 7-yard scoring strike to William Tudman at the 2:52 mark to cut the Wildcat lead to eight points. But the Wildcats were able to maintain possession over the final two minutes, with Kirbyville quarterback Aaron Hazelwood connecting with receiver Randy Musgrove for a 22-yard completion to convert a third-and-10 and deny the Lumberjacks any opportunity to tie the score. "I'm proud of the way we kept fighting back, even after we couldn't seem to do anything right early in the game," Diboll head coach Tom Sheppard said. "We had a chance to win this thing against a good football team. As long as we keep fighting like that, we'll be just fine." Diboll's furious push at the end came after a mistake-prone first three quarters. The 'Jacks committed eight penalties for 60 yards in the first quarter alone – including three straight to open the game. For the night, Spencer completed 15 of his 28 pass attempts to total 318 yards, but was plagued by six dropped passes, several of which were drive-killers. In fact, Spencer's only interception came on a ball that passed through a receiver's hands and straight to Wildcat safety Broderick Jackson, who returned the pick 37 yards to the Diboll 3-yard line. That set up a 1-yard plunge from LeFredrick Ford, giving the 'Cats a 28-7 lead. The offensive mistakes proved costly – Diboll also failed to punch in from two yards out on a fourth-and-goal in the second quarter – but Sheppard said the failure to make tackles allowed the Wildcats to sustain several scoring drives. "It might have been a case of first-game jitters. I don't know," Sheppard said. "But the bottom line is we have to tackle better. We had several chances to make tackles for losses, but we didn't wrap up and ended up giving up big gains that kept them moving the chains." A stable of five Kirbyville runnings backs accounted for 280 rushing yards; and four different Wildcat runners rushed for four scores, highlighted by Ja'Michael Ervine's 69-yard jaunt in the second quarter. "These kids will learn from this and bounce back," Sheppard said. "We know we have a lot of talent, and tonight the kids showed they have plenty of heart. "We'll be alright. This one's over." Diboll (0-1) will hit the road again Friday to take on Silsbee. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Diboll defeated Hardin-Jefferson 14-3 in a scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Lumberjack Stadium. Both teams were sluggish on offense the first part of the contest, but the Jacks scored two touchdowns in the last 15 minutes to take the win. Diboll's defense did not give up a score until the final play of the scrimmage when the Hawks connected on a 43-yard field goal. "We ran three types of defensive fronts today and we knew we would have some issues with one of them, but the main front that we'll use we did a great job with," head football coach Tom Sheppard said. "We gave up a lot of yards, but no scores. With the main front, we really got after them and they couldn't do anything about it." Diboll's two scores came on a 16-yard run by J.J. Hubbard and a 24-yard pass from Jacolby Spencer to Cameron McCollum. "We didn't do as well offensively the first 20 plays, but we got things going in the last 15 minutes," Sheppard said. "The kids have responded well and we've got things moving in the right direction." Diboll got inside the Hawks' 20-yard line twice early in the scrimmage and came away empty. Hardin-Jefferson only got inside the Jacks' 20 once, as they moved to the 13. That drive ended with a missed field goal from 32 yards.

Diboll will win in a squeaker.

you almost had the name right, but it was Jeff Vanover who was QB when Hadnot was at RB. He was the coach's son, who went off to play LB at Rice.

Didn't make this one, but from listening to radio, seemed like it was all Diboll from start to end. Other than that first quick strike by Liberty, Diboll was able to recover and dominate.

glad you were able to make it to the game. It was a good game from what I saw in the first half. Didn't see the 2nd. What are you opinions on Diboll's skill positions? I think they have a chance at surprising ppl. Defense still needs work, but they were able to shut them down for most of the 1st half, take away that amazing 60+ yard td catch, and it wouldve been 27-6 halftime. Coldspring has athletes all over the field. I was wondering why they didn't utilize #9 more on the offense, but after seeing #20 Zavius, I understand, he was incredibly quick.

I left the Diboll/Coldspring game @ half when Diboll was up 27-12. They came out and scored so I figured it was all downhill from there. Diboll did put in their reserves and Coldspring scored most of their points at that time. When Diboll's coach realized the game was getting too close for comfort, his starters were already cold from sitting out. As for a real game with Kville, I do think it would be a different outcome than that one scrimmage. Kville doesn't have much depth, which will hurt them in the playoffs. Their team is very small in numbers.

Who are some of Liberty's top players, and who have they played so far?

What can we expect from the Liberty squad? Diboll's last game was a 55-44 win over Coldspring. others are 45-12 over Sheperd, and 52-6 over Cleveland.

As a Diboll Fan, I would like to nominate Johnson #20 for Coldspring. He had 275 yards rushing for 3 td's.

27-12 was the score @ halftime. the actual final was 55-44. Diboll was ahead the whole game, and when they got a comfortable lead, started to put the reserves in. THis is one Coldspring caught a second wind and went nuts. Johnson for Coldspring ended up with 275yds rushing with 3 tds. Great athlete.
