1.
He was the MVP/best player, don't get hung up on the position.
i just asked a question ,but since you wanna go down that road then  if positions wasnt important dont pick no other players at all,  just say he is mvp and be done with it , but we know that is ridiculous !!!  i simply asked was  quirante  the best qb in his district ? if so then he should be 1st team , is he the best linebacker in the district if so then he should be on the 1st team . i asked because that is how it was some years ago , i was just asking when did the format change and why ? if you dont know then say you dont know , its ok , dont let your ego get the best of you im just asking a question .
2. i know the kid from vidor made mvp , but what position did he make on the the all district squad ? back in the day if a player was an mvp and he was a qb he was the the 1st team all district qb as well , if he played on the other side of the ball like linebacker he was also included on the 1st team , i would just like to know when did they start doing this format ? i live in va now and this was the 1st time i saw that format where the superlatives werent included on the all district team . the question i have is, is  the kid from vidor the best qb in the district ? is he the best linebacker in district ?
3. Don't forget about that young man Kenny hill from out of southlake Carroll who was Gatorade player of the year he has committed to texas a&m he should be a good one on the next level .
4. i brought this up a few weeks ago on how they do all district picks nowadays , but i didnt get an answer . i remember back in the day if you were mvp of the district and you played running back you were automatically 1st team running back and the stats you racked up was worthy of you being on that 1st team  . i see nowadays if you make a superlative you are not included on the 1st team or second team . the question is who was the best qb in 21-3a ? i am a hamshire alumni and im really happy too see dante smith make 1st team qb , im just curious on how they do their voting nowadays , also glad too see the freshmen k king make newcomer of the year (something we didnt have back in the day ) and other hamshire players make an all district team .
5. i will say this, every since newton won their first state championship in 1974 (which they beat hamshire in bi district 14-13, who for 7 weeks was ranked #1 ) they havent looked back. im  sure they had a few down years (i do mean "few") here and there but  they win consistently . they won back when they were 2a  in 74 when the highest classification was 4a ,  they  won the 3a championship back  in 1998, went back too 2a won in 2005 and looks like they are about too win their 3rd state championship in 14 years . i look at results , they have a winning culture at that school and have had it for years . coach barbay was head coach from 1975 till he passed in 2010 , that school is in the playoffs every year . how many coaches has hamshire had since 2002 ? how many coaches have newton had since 1975 ? when you are a great coach you build great programs thus you will have a lot of support from all over that community . i have said give a coach 4 years to get it up and running if it isnt working by then then go in a different direction , but give the coach a chance . i look at east chambers who were our rivals for years they won district 20-3a in 1982 then they went on a drought where they didnt do anything from 1983 -1994 , since 1995 they have had winning records and have made the playoffs 17 years straight !!! i know the culture of kids are different than a lot of us that played back in the day , but i will still say if you have kids that love to play football and they have a good coaching staff it will manifest out there on the field.
6.
One thing that is not being mentioned is numbers and talent.  The talent at HF has been lacking for a while.  There are some good classes coming up.  The numbers game that use to work in HFs favor back in the 80s and 90s are now working against them.  HF has been 3A for years.  They use to play EC, Anahuac, Warren, OF, Buna, SFA ans so forth.  Still playing a few of the old 3A district teams but now have to deal with WOS, Silsbee, Bridge City.  They no longer have what is considered as a larger enrollment.  Shoe is on the other foot and the talent is down.  The only way to turn it around is for the community to get behind a coach and keep their mouths shut.  Winning will come and more kids will play.  Whether Randy played on Friday night or not does not matter (I don't remember him getting to play).  He is a huge HF fan and supporter.
well put finger roll  , wos has won state in 5a , they were dominate in 4a and they will rule 21-3a for years to come , silsbee isnt no slouch either these are former 5a and 4a teams . they need to let these coaches coach these players and the parents need to sit their butts in the stands and cheer . i saw some of the same things when i played in the mid 80's , i saw an incident with danaher my sophmore year and when charley wilson coached there  a disgruntled father came and was ready to fight him right there during our practice cause his son( who was all district the year before) was told he wasnt gonna start that week it got ugly , but that player wasnt putting his best foot forward something the father didnt see but we all saw it . i hope hamshire turns it around we had a really good football tradition that these kids should be enjoying and not wrecked by silly politics of so called grown ups .
7.
the school board hired him , now they want to run the program, they have abiut 4 or 5 coaches that need to go , let harris do that , i went to hamshire and coached at hf , have a kid there , if the board would keep thies big mouths and noses out of his business then he might stay and bring them back to be respectful, bottom line LET HIM DO HIS JOB ! 12 gauge what year did you graduate from hamshire ?
8.
it may not be the coach or the kids  or talent but what needs to happen is the kids need to able to have fun playing the sport instead of always trying to please mommy or daddy with trying to do to much to win. i know most of the coaches and parents of these kids and i was once one of those who played and coached in the hf glory days. we never were favored to win but we did because we enjoyed playing for our school pride..    p.s. we didn't have to lift weights all year long or run extra but we were ready when the lights came on to compete you have to let these kids have fun and rest for their bodys and mind to be prepared to compete. lifting 5 days a week is a bit to much for these kids they are miserable and hate going to athletics and you new coaches should know this.
mercedes what year did you graduate from hamshire ?
9. this is why they havent been to the playoffs in 11 years and keep posting losing records, since the 70's thru the 80's they didnt miss many years making the playoffs the longest drought was from 84-87  then from 88-01 under coach tarver they went on really good playoff runs as a matter of fact under tarver for 16yrs they went to the playoffs 10 times his record was 116-58-1 some of hamshire's powerful teams were under tarver , i heard he wanted to update things next thing you know he is in bridge city (in 5 yrs there  he won 3 district titles then retired ) . hamshire had all the ex players and coaches from the past come this year i wonder did they invite him ? tarver is the most successful coach in their history after all . hamshire has had hall of fame coaches that has come through that town koening who in 9 yrs went 69-27-1 from 1970-1975 he won district 3 times out right and shared the title 2 more times and took hamshire's best team historically to the semifinals in 1975 (the deepest they have ever been ) then phil danaher 6 years 43-22 , 3 district titles ,2 bi district titles and 2 trips too regionals and  one losing season 1982 . he left in 1984 and the rest is history 2nd all time winning coach in texas high school football history .tarver was the last straw,  i say hamshire is cursed you dont let legends come through your program like they have and have losing go on like it has for 11 years . let the ad/head coach do what he sees fit to do , i see coach danaher is still coaching . how long did that coach from newton coach them before he passed away ? he is/was a legend and had some great football teams and left a legacy there that you see manifesting deep into the playoffs , by the way i got them winning it all .
10. no newton highlights ?? i didnt see any highlights from last weeks win , they are putting up points like they are playing against a freshmen squad . channel 6 and 12 for 2 weeks in a row showed no highlights from newton's victories . i see them taking state for sure .
11.
Usually, All-District picks aren't announced until after each individual district teams are knocked out of the playoffs. The selections have already been made though. I hope we don't see 20-4A's selections for another 5 weeks.  :)
i was always under the impression all district picks were made when the final teams representing the district got eliminated , then the coaches would get together the following week and make the picks , again im going off of what i was told years ago , i know things have changed .
12.
If a player gets a superlative then he is not eligiable for 1st or 2nd team.
thanks wtb i never knew that,  i just got back into following high school ball for the 1st time in a long time and since i played ball in the area years ago i was just wondering .  i know years ago it wasnt like that,  do you know the reason why they decided to do it like that  ?
13. when we talk all district in the different districts , the one thing i get a little confused on is when a player makes mvp or defensive player of the year that person is not mentioned or listed in the 1st team picks , in the past or back when i played high school ball (mid 80's) if you were the mvp , def player of the year , outstanding lineman of the year you were still listed as a 1st teamer of the position you played . i live in va now and this is where i 1st started seeing this format some yrs ago .  i have seen where a young man was def player of the year but didnt know what position he played cause he is not listed . i do remember yrs ago a player made 2nd team qb , but he was that district most outstanding back , but you knew he was the 2nd team all district qb , the 1st team qb was the leagues mvp , he was listed on the team . i guess we just assume that he is a 1st teamer ? a little help please .
14. isaiah robertson gets a lot of grief about getting ran over by earl campbell , but if you look at that clip posted ubove at the 5 second mark you will see jack youngblood who was one of the best defensive ends of that era, bad ass  and a future hall of famer didnt want none of earl after he ran over robertson he actually curled up like a sissy  in hopes of avoiding contact dave elmendorf #42 a texas born texas a&m aggie great and a pretty good safety back then grabs earl's jersy as it tears away(no horse collar there )  then if you find the clip of this run all the way to the end you will see fred dryer #89 the other defensive end in discuss looking like what in the hell just happened ??? for those of us that watched the show hunter in the mid 80's that was him . a lot of good to great defensive players got trucked by the tyler rose isaiah robertson was more decorated at his position than youngblood he was a 6 time all pro and pro bowler who anchored one of the better defenses in that era for some really good rams teams , too bad this is all he is rememberd for .
15. former hbo sport president ross greenburg along with nfl films , nbc sports group and christian campbell , there will be a long awaited documentary coming this december on earl campbell's days at  john tyler high school state winning team , his texas days wining the heisman trophy and his great nfl career . they will also talk about the condition of former football players like earl that have life long injuries playing a violent and brutal game , its called still standing . the documentary is suppose to come on nbc channels,  i loved earl as a kid and dont think we will see another like him  in my lifetime . cant wait till it comes on
16. damn !!!  oh well no milwaukee best  and churches chicken tonight , we get em next year
17. as we called it back in our days (early to mid 80's) THE CHEEK BOWL !!!! it would be nice for hamshire to get this one and have a district win.  i will say 28-14 lets get it boys ..... for the good times
18. what do you expect from the espn highligts , myspace , facebook , smart phone , and twitter page era ? i remember it was a time when players announced where they were going their sr year on signing day . i see now you have guys committing to colleges (verbally) as jr's , hell even sophmores in some cases . this in my opinion breeds the look at me attitude , high school football players dont need a coach to hype them for college . players have their own familes and  buddies filming , editing and  uploading them on youtube . they have sites where you can load your video , put  your pic and stats on there  so that colleges coaches see you . back in the day if you werent an elite player or good player the chances of a college coach seeing you were slim to none . your coach would send film , just make sure you didnt get into the dog house with him are you were done !!! nowadays it doesnt matter these kids can do it themselves , which breeds i dont need you mentality , its all about me mentality these are the  players that are bread nowadays all over the country . he is one of the many thousand of players that do things like this  , thanks social  media !!!!
19. for years i always thought that the super  team and the super gold team were the same . i know the pa super team started in 1971 or 1972 i have seen the list from then up till 1981 . when did the beaumont super gold start ?  i saw some of the same players make both teams in my research . i went to hamshire fannett and we had a few of our players make the teams over the years , just trying to find out is one suppose to be better than the other ? do we have any archive specialist here ? i would like to get a list or even pics from the past teams from 1982-2001 . is there still a all hardin county team ?
20.
Money, that's the key , all left for more money, tarver left because the board would not update anything, then the board got two coaches that were at best not good, price started to turn things and I think Harris will too just give him time,
that is always the key , whats sad is you have coaches that coach at places forever look at the coach that coached at newton , i mean newton is in the hunt every year and have a good tradition . i personally dont think that hamshire community wants a coach that is powerful that would demand upgrading where ever he sees fit , they want to play puppet master , now they wonder why its been a 10 yr drought . i hear the freshman class is talented , so maybe there is hope in the near future .
21.
I played against derrick deshotel and anthony james, I played for sfa I was the starting running back on that 86 squad I rushed for almost 1200 yards I got hurt against crockett, but hf was good my jr yr but my sr yr we beatem pretty good matter of fact I drug deshotel in the end zone for a td in that game
thats funny about derrick , what is your name my man ? i may remember you i was a sr on our 85 team , yall hasd some nice players . my man was john evans he was a beast and so was fred rhians , they were the best linebacker  tandem in the district that year (85) hands down !!! i was number 62 i played linebacker , we had mutual respect for one another ability  , we were the best linebackers in the district that year (they screwd me and fred ) . kip was a helluva cornerback . you guys had some great teams .
22.
I remember when the Horns were a powerhouse team..I am  just curious and honestly not ragging on you guys. What was the difference between then and now in your opinion? Coaching not the same, talent pool not as deep, or the district got a lot tougher?
i look at like this les koenning went 69-27-1 in 9 yrs as a head coach for hamshire he put them on the map in the 70's , however they had him being  a head coach , track and field coach , taught all the pe's,  taught spanish and drove the bus for $18,000 back in 75 . memorial offers him $2000.00 more dollars to be head coach and help with the athletic department ,thats it !! concentrate on football . needless to say he left went to memorial the next yr and went 12-1 and went to the qtr finals and the rest is history . he is a hall of fame coach with over 200 wins , what if he would have stayed ? with the talent coming up from 76-86 he would have built a dynasty , that competes every year for the district title and go deep into the playoffs . phil danaher 1978-1983 43-22 3 district titles 2 bi district titles , he was just getting warmed up . i never knew the whole story but it was a lot of meddling parents during that time , just let the man coach !!! well he is 2nd all times in wins , has a stadium named after him , they are in the playoffs every year and go deep in the playoffs you dont see losing records there , he built a juggernaunt why not hamshire ??? (you see where im going ?) coach tarver  coached 16 yrs at hamshire compiled a 116-58-4 record went to the playoffs 10 of the 16yrs there , he had the most all state players that  played for him , he produced a couple of pro ball players , you have have to crown him , pay him , and honor him . no , he leaves goes to bridge city coaches for another 5 years and wins 3 district titles and retires , those titles could have been at hamshire !! you see you have 2 hall of fame coaches and possibly a third that has come through hamshire in the last 36 years, hamshire is suppose to be a power house in 3a possibly like a sealy , png , odessa permiam , dangerfield and a lot of other schools that compete year in and year out , it was always talent between hamshire , winnie , labelle , fannett and cheeks . winning brings money and these guys  won on a consistent basis , you gotta pay these people for their works and tell those meddling parents to just get in the stands and cheer . there is no reason why hamshire is suppose to be celler dwellers for 10yrs when you have had all that coaching and great players that come  through that school .
23.
Besides george the other back was Anthony Simon , who might have. Been the BEST back in HF history!
what was the qb name of that team ? did you graduate from hamshire ? them guys were putting up points , im just curious on the qb , hamshire has a long line of great backs that played there that started in the 70's , thats another thread in itself .
24. richard davis was a load to bring down payed against him in 85
25. i played against kenny ford my senior year his jr year and he ran the ball with kenny everfield  im talking 85 not 86 when he was a far better passer his sr year than his jr year .  their  top receiver was  brian hall who caught very few  passes , he ran reverses . the top 2 recievers that year in 1985 20-3a was blaine shellhammer and derrick deshotel very few teams that year threw the ball like we did . your talking about the 1986 season  when he was throwing to graylon johnson and they were both all state that year they lost to cuero in the semifinals .
