  1. This should answer any questions that were posed about the Hawks coaching staff. While it is certainly the kids that play the game these guys have done an amazing job of putting this team in a position to win.Congrats on the berth at the drum and good luck on your continued journey.
  2. While everyone has a different opinion on what the district MVP is I believe it is meant to be the best player in the district. That award should go to Tyler Copeland. While I don't have any scoring averages in front of me I think the offensive POY should be Daniel Blankenship. In the games I saw he scored both off the dribble and was a good 3-pt shooter as well.Whittacre was good defensive stopper and rebounder so I'll agree with the defensive nod.Jones should definitely be a unanimous first team pick.
  3. This was a brand new club in Spurger this year. The only thing missing going in to the season was experience and they took a GIANT step this year in that regard. While I'm a big fan of last years coach and the group of players he had, they have moved on.They should hold a special place in the Pirate fans hearts. This years group is building to that same type goal. The young new coach they have will do a great job because he has a genuine desire to teach the game and a group of young men who will put in the work in the off season to be successful.I said at the beginning of this season to give these guys a chance to get a little experience before you put a lot of expectations on them. They now have that experience and should be one of the favorites to come out of this region next year.Don't be surprised if you see the Pirates in Austin next season.Congrats guys on great season.
  4. Congrats to NW on the win and the state berth. They have been my pick to return out of region 3 since I saw them early in the season. You gotta congratulate Sabine ,anyway you look at it,If you play in the finals in region 3 you have a very good ball club. It's always harder on the parents to lose these games than it is the kids.Congrats to both clubs, the region is full of teams that would have loved to be in this conversation.
  5. It has alot to do with exposure but even more to do with the small school coaches and who they know in the college ranks. There aren't a lot of small school players who can play at the D-1 level. There a bunch of them who are as good as some of the Mid Major,D-2 and JUCO kids who don't have the connections to get a look.None of this applies to Donahoe,he could have played regardless of what size high school he was in.You bring up an interesting point Dove,if a kid has aspirations of playing college ball he may want to move in to a larger district.
  6. I think it's: NW vs Arp Newton vs Sabine NW vs Sabine in the finals with NW making a return trip to the drum. I hope I'm wrong because I'm pulling for Kountze and Newton.
  7. I'm surprised the UIL has let the Prep schools in the playoffs. You never know from year to year what they will have because they play by a different set of rules than the public schools. This year they have been awful next year they could recruit the world, you just never know.
  8. Where's it gonna be played?????
  9. This may be a Co-MVP year. Both clubs would struggle without Shannon or Jarvis and they wound up as co-champs.I don't know how you could give one the nod over the other.I agree about Turner,he has to be the defensive MVP.Trying to sneak past him is like trying to sneak daylight past a rooster,it ain't happening. ;)
  10. It's addictive.I've been the ultimate gym rat for the past 50+ years ;D ;D
  11. Janet and Mike are both great coaches. That probably made her decision a lot less painful.
  12. Are they playing at Sam Houston or Huntsville High School?I don't know anything about Bremond except they are in the top 20.I think they finished in a 3 way tie in the district with Normangee. If so they will probably be pretty solid.I was impressed with Normagee's depth the other night for a 1-a school. There aren't any bad clubs still playing now,Good Luck Pirates.
  13. I'm watching way to many games : :
  14. Yes,my bad I had a senior moment ;D ;D ;D
  15. Yes, she will be staying at HJ to teach. She will still be a fixture at all the games I'm sure. She is crazy about the community and the kids over there.I think she is just ready to step back and relax a bit.
  16. Dugat from Dayton plays for the Horned Frogs.I watchem them the other night and he starts for them.Very solid player.
  17. The bench at HJ was full of quality coaches.I know she told me repeatedly she had the best staff in the world.
  18. After a stellar career that spanned 30 seasons I've heard Coach Sims is stepping down as head coach at HJ.I've had the privilege of watching her throughout her career as a high school player, college standout and as a coach.I will miss the pre game scouting reports and the excitement of the post game calls. While I don't have her career stats on hand I know her clubs at HJ won 20 or more games a season for 12 of her seasons at the helm. She has been a true ambassador for the girls game in SETX.To borrow a line from Lonesome Dove"It's been a helluva ride".I'll miss seeing ya in the box Sis.
  19. I think it had ALOT to do with him not playing at this time. There was an offer from SFA on the table at the end of the season.I think he would be playing now had he accepted that offer.I know he played almost his entire senior season on a bad knee.I watched him at the state tournament, where he refused to let his club lose.I hope he signs and plays at the D-1 level, the kid has a ton of talent.
  20. Thanks for setting him straight KHSAlum400.I didn't say there was anything racially wrong with either town.I said the law enforcement people directed the opposing fans out a different exit, which they did.Thats unique I think because I've never seen it any where else and I've been in just about every gym in the state at one time or another.FYI The fans from West Hardin are good folks, they support their kids just like everyone else.
  21. I'll be yelling for Kountze but I think NW will be a little to tough for the Lions.NW should handle the pressure the Lions apply and that will hurt Kountze on the offensive end.NW wins by 8. NW-72 Kountze-64
  22. Congrats to Coach West and the Panthers on a great season.I knew it wouldn't be long before he turned things around down there.I know they are disappointed but they have nothing to hang their heads about.Good job guys.
  23. I have had the opportunity to go to EC and New Waverly following basketball teams for years.EC has had very good clubs the past several years and were always good host when you went there to play. They support their kids,as they should, but were always gracious host.New Waverly also always had good clubs but we usually were directed out seperate doors by the law enforcement folks. It's a shame but it's a different world when comparing those 2 communities. That being said I think NW represents region 3 in Austin this year.
  24. Ryan was a good kid and a great player.I don't know anything about his academics but Rice is a tough place to get in to.I know SFA was ready to sign him out of high school but he got some incredibly bad advice from some AAU folks.I don't think he ever played at Navarro, I hope he gets things worked out,he definitely had the skill to play college ball.
  25. If Chase and Daniel decide the tempo Spurger could very well win it.The few times I've seen Thorndale over the past couple of seasons they never let the other club control the pace. They are usually very basketball smart which allows them to stay in games where they shouldn't be close.I haven't seen them this year so my observations are from the past 2 years.
