I would urge anyone to get some tape of Copeland in his sophomore season and watch his defense. He didn't have any help this year on the offensive end.I'm sure he was probably instructed not to be to aggressive on "D" because if he gets in foul trouble the Oilers weren't going to score. If your MVP is the player who helped his team finish high in the standings then Jones is a good choice. If it's the best player then Copeland is your man.Did they ever put out a complete list??

Now that's big time. These 2 are really good kids.Couldn't have a better duo to carry that torch. -
I got a call from my sister who was at the tournament. She said the girl from Nimitz was the best high school player she had ever seen. That covers lots of girls, she must really be special.
-
You gotta HAND (pun intended ;))it to the Huntington coach that year. That was the only way that club had a prayer and at the end of the day a win is a win.I would never question a winning coaches strategy.
-
Can't argue with the young guy from Spurger being the coach of the year,he did a great job.I think SP would have been the runner up with or without #30.He was a solid player but they had more depth than the folks behind them in the race.I think the MVP should be the best overall player in the district regardless of where his club finishes. If you would have a mock draft out of the players in this district Copeland would be the first player picked. While AAU clubs may help with individual skills,SP needs to get involved in a good league as a team if they want to improve as a club.

Not any weak sisters left in that line up.Good luck guys.

This should answer any questions that were posed about the Hawks coaching staff. While it is certainly the kids that play the game these guys have done an amazing job of putting this team in a position to win.Congrats on the berth at the drum and good luck on your continued journey.

While everyone has a different opinion on what the district MVP is I believe it is meant to be the best player in the district. That award should go to Tyler Copeland. While I don't have any scoring averages in front of me I think the offensive POY should be Daniel Blankenship. In the games I saw he scored both off the dribble and was a good 3-pt shooter as well.Whittacre was good defensive stopper and rebounder so I'll agree with the defensive nod.Jones should definitely be a unanimous first team pick.

This was a brand new club in Spurger this year. The only thing missing going in to the season was experience and they took a GIANT step this year in that regard. While I'm a big fan of last years coach and the group of players he had, they have moved on.They should hold a special place in the Pirate fans hearts. This years group is building to that same type goal. The young new coach they have will do a great job because he has a genuine desire to teach the game and a group of young men who will put in the work in the off season to be successful.I said at the beginning of this season to give these guys a chance to get a little experience before you put a lot of expectations on them. They now have that experience and should be one of the favorites to come out of this region next year.Don't be surprised if you see the Pirates in Austin next season.Congrats guys on great season.

Congrats to NW on the win and the state berth. They have been my pick to return out of region 3 since I saw them early in the season. You gotta congratulate Sabine ,anyway you look at it,If you play in the finals in region 3 you have a very good ball club. It's always harder on the parents to lose these games than it is the kids.Congrats to both clubs, the region is full of teams that would have loved to be in this conversation.

It has alot to do with exposure but even more to do with the small school coaches and who they know in the college ranks. There aren't a lot of small school players who can play at the D-1 level. There a bunch of them who are as good as some of the Mid Major,D-2 and JUCO kids who don't have the connections to get a look.None of this applies to Donahoe,he could have played regardless of what size high school he was in.You bring up an interesting point Dove,if a kid has aspirations of playing college ball he may want to move in to a larger district.

I think it's: NW vs Arp Newton vs Sabine NW vs Sabine in the finals with NW making a return trip to the drum. I hope I'm wrong because I'm pulling for Kountze and Newton. -

I'm surprised the UIL has let the Prep schools in the playoffs. You never know from year to year what they will have because they play by a different set of rules than the public schools. This year they have been awful next year they could recruit the world, you just never know. -

Where's it gonna be played????? -
This may be a Co-MVP year. Both clubs would struggle without Shannon or Jarvis and they wound up as co-champs.I don't know how you could give one the nod over the other.I agree about Turner,he has to be the defensive MVP.Trying to sneak past him is like trying to sneak daylight past a rooster,it ain't happening. ;)

It's addictive.I've been the ultimate gym rat for the past 50+ years ;D ;D

Janet and Mike are both great coaches. That probably made her decision a lot less painful.

Are they playing at Sam Houston or Huntsville High School?I don't know anything about Bremond except they are in the top 20.I think they finished in a 3 way tie in the district with Normangee. If so they will probably be pretty solid.I was impressed with Normagee's depth the other night for a 1-a school. There aren't any bad clubs still playing now,Good Luck Pirates. -
I'm watching way to many games : :
-
Yes,my bad I had a senior moment ;D ;D ;D
-
Yes, she will be staying at HJ to teach. She will still be a fixture at all the games I'm sure. She is crazy about the community and the kids over there.I think she is just ready to step back and relax a bit.
-
Dugat from Dayton plays for the Horned Frogs.I watchem them the other night and he starts for them.Very solid player.
-
The bench at HJ was full of quality coaches.I know she told me repeatedly she had the best staff in the world.
-
After a stellar career that spanned 30 seasons I've heard Coach Sims is stepping down as head coach at HJ.I've had the privilege of watching her throughout her career as a high school player, college standout and as a coach.I will miss the pre game scouting reports and the excitement of the post game calls. While I don't have her career stats on hand I know her clubs at HJ won 20 or more games a season for 12 of her seasons at the helm. She has been a true ambassador for the girls game in SETX.To borrow a line from Lonesome Dove"It's been a helluva ride".I'll miss seeing ya in the box Sis.

I think it had ALOT to do with him not playing at this time. There was an offer from SFA on the table at the end of the season.I think he would be playing now had he accepted that offer.I know he played almost his entire senior season on a bad knee.I watched him at the state tournament, where he refused to let his club lose.I hope he signs and plays at the D-1 level, the kid has a ton of talent.
