North Shore ready for Round 4 against Duncanville Jon Poorman, Staff writer high school sports coordinator for the Houston Chronicle Dec. 14, 2022: Dec. 14, 2022 8:41 a.m. Jon Kay knows exactly what kind of battle his players are getting into this week. When North Shore takes the field at AT&T Stadium for the UIL Class 6A Division I state championship game, a familiar opponent will be standing on the opposite sideline. The Mustangs have been kryptonite for Duncanville since 2018 when the programs first clashed for the state crown. Since then, the teams have met in the season finale two more times, including North Shore’s 17-10 victory last December. Duncanville is still searching for its first victory in the series. Perhaps the fourth time will be the charm for the Panthers. Or perhaps North Shore will claim title No. 6. It will all be settled at 7 p.m. Saturday in Arlington in the final contest of the 2022 season. “They’re a phenomenal program,” Kay said Tuesday afternoon. “Their success speaks for itself, so just the opportunity to travel up there, pretty close to their home stadium, and play them for all these years has done nothing but made us better. It’s a great opportunity, and we’re looking forward to it.” North Shore (15-0) jumped ahead of Duncanville (14-0) in the latest national rankings from USA Today this week. The Mustangs came in at No. 8, while Duncanville remained at 9. Rankings won’t mean much come Saturday, however, as the Lone Star State’s finest test their mettle between the lines. North Shore has won 28 consecutive games and is 74-3 since the beginning of the 2018 season. Duncanville has gone 66-6 in that span with half of those losses coming against the Mustangs. North Shore defeated Austin Westlake 49-34 in the semifinals last week, ending the Chaparrals’ 54-game winning streak and hopes for a fourth consecutive state championship. Duncanville, meanwhile, was dominant during a 41-0 victory over Prosper. The Panthers have been playing lights-out in the postseason, outscoring their opponents 219-37. Duncanville is holding opponents to just 9.6 points and 193.2 yards per game. The playoffs have seen those numbers dip to 7.4 and 179.6. “I think it’s just their overall team speed and just their flat aggressiveness as a football team,” Kay said of what stands out most about the Panthers this season. “They want to get down in the trenches and do some stuff, but they’re explosive, and they’ve got speed all over the place. They play some unbelievable defense, and they’re great on special teams. You can see why they’re undefeated.” Here’s a look at the three previous meetings between the programs. 2018 — North Shore 41, Duncanville 36 This one will live in Texas high school football lore forever. North Shore quarterback Dematrius Davis — perhaps the greatest signal-caller to ever come through the program — heaved a Hail Mary into the back right corner of the end zone, and receiver A.J. Carter leaped to make the 45-yard catch as time expired. That last-ditch effort handed the Mustangs a perfect 16-0 season and their third state championship. It was the second title under Kay’s leadership. Davis, a sophomore at the time, was outstanding in the contest, completing 19-of-28 passes for 333 yards and five touchdowns. “We practice it every Thursday at the end of practice,” said Davis, who accounted for more than 10,500 yards during his high school career. “We never thought we would do it, but we did it today, and it happened. It worked.” 2019 — North Shore 31, Duncanville 17 Duncanville was seeking revenge after suffering the heartbreak of the Hail Mary a year prior. But Davis and company were just too much this time around. The Panthers were playing without starting quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson, who tore his ACL a week before in the state semifinals. North Shore was without star running back Zach Evans, who was unavailable for the game for violating team rules. But Roger Hagan took his place and rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to lead the offense. Davis accounted for two scores as well, including a 44-yard pass to Charles King with 2:33 to play. The North Shore defense stood tall, shutting out Duncanville over the final two quarters. 2021 — North Shore 17, Duncanville 10 This contest was a defensive battle. But it was a freshman quarterback who made perhaps the biggest play. Kaleb Bailey connected with David Amador on a 39-yard touchdown pass with just 2:53 remaining, and Jayven Anderson came up with an interception on the ensuing Duncanville drive to wrap up the Mustangs’ most recent state title. Bailey, who has been out with an injury since the fifth game of the 2022 season, was named the game’s offensive MVP after passing for 107 yards and two scores. The defense, meanwhile, limited Duncanville to just 192 total yards. Defensive lineman Ronald Wilson and linebacker Kent Battle led the charge on that side of the ball. “We knew what kind of game it was going to be,” Kay said. “Just proud as hell of our kids going in there and just taking a punch and throwing a punch.”

Faith led Albany to the title game in 1991, but the Lions fell to Schulenburg 21-0. The Lions returned 18 years later only to suffer a 38-24 loss to Cayuga. The Lions have scored at least 35 points in all playoff contests and are averaging 52 points per game under quarterback Cole Chapman, who finished with three touchdowns in a win over New Home in the semis. Standing in their way this time is an unbeaten Mart squad that’s looking for its ninth state title in program history. If the SOC\ L.HILL game last year was 45,769, I'd guess PNG\SETX AREA can add 10,000 more to that so 55,000 is possible.
