3. Didn't intend for this to be a contentious thread ... I was curious what folks around here thought about these issues. I saw an original post on the volleyball thread and thought it would get a bigger audience on the football thread. I read an interesting article about the origination of the term "redskin" ... Apparently bounty hunters back in the 1800s were paid good money for all the Indian scalps they could collect and turn in to traders. They would sell skins, furs and pelts of various animals, including the "redskins" of killed American Indian men, women and children. Is it true? Who knows. In regards to the Rebels mascot, Sour Lake High School used to have a Rebels mascot. When integration took place and it became Hardin-Jefferson High School, the mascot was changed to the Hawks.
4. When I worked in the sports department at The Enterprise it was a ironclad rule that writers not use "lady" in front of a team's mascot. That included Lamar sports. The idea was that by qualifying the team as a "lady" rather than just the mascot's name we were diminishing the role of women's sports and demeaning to women in general. Yet, the first person to scream bloody murder was the women's volleyball coach at Lamar at the time. "We are the Lady Cardinals!" she said. As far as I know, the rule still stands ... not sure if it's enforced though. Honestly, the only one that ever bothered me was the shortened version of any team called the Bulldogs ... as in the "Lady Dogs" ... just something distasteful about it I guess. Here are some interesting columns about the "Lady" issue: TODAY COLUMN STATE COLLEGIAN VOLS NEWS And how about some other controversial mascot musings: (SORRY PN-G, WARREN ... 7. The Silsbee Bee is ALWAYS at Silsbee football games to take pictures. In fact, we have staffed every Silsbee game with a photographer AND a writer, which is unheard of for most weekly newspapers. Brent moved to Beaumont and his job keeps him late most days. He asked to move to the Lumberton beat since it was closer and easier for him to get to. There have been a few games where Brent shot Silsbee games this season, allowing me the opportunity to get pictures of Kountze or Evadale. Otherwise, I've been shooting Silsbee games every Friday night, including the tsunami week against West Orange-Stark. I will often put photos of those games on this Web site as a courtesy to those who follow Silsbee football. Brent does the same for Lumberton fans. My first priority is to make sure we have photos for the newspaper and we run a booster page every week with as many as 20 photos from each Tigers game. For those interested in Silsbee football photos, you can check out my Web site at www.gldphotography.com [img][Hidden Content]] [img][Hidden Content]]
8. Check the sticky topic at the top for the updated list of 5A-4A-3A statistical leaders. New this week is a list of top performers from Friday night. These include all classes. As usual, if you have corrections, additions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to let me know. Write me at [email protected]
9. In District 21-3A it has to be Silsbee's win over West Orange-Stark. Here's why: 1. Silsbee loses three games against Lumberton, Newton, Jasper by a combined total of 11 points. Silsbee needed a big win to get this season on track and to shut the mouths of the nay-sayers as to whether the Tigers could finish the big games or not. 2. Silsbee proved it's not a one-faceted offense-only team. Silsbee is proud, and lucky, to have Jeremy Johnson as quarterback. The win against West Orange-Stark proved the Tigers' defense had finally come together and can stop the big teams at the critical moments. 3. West Orange-Stark had not lost a district game since dropping to 3A in 2004 ... making history is always huge. 4. West Orange-Stark was state-ranked and because of the loss to Silsbee, dropped out of the top 10 list. 5. Silsbee ends a five-game losing streak and is now No. 1 in 21-3A as the only team with a 2-0 record.
10. The leaders file is listed at the top of the forum with the other "sticky" topics. ... Gerry
11. I graduated from Kirbyville in 1985 and back in those days, we used to play four or five homecomings a year ... That was after Bubba Bean graduated and before the Wildcats started winning games in the late 80s.
12. CHECK THE STICKY TOPICS AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE FOR THE STAT LEADERS ... Sorry it took me so long guys ... The Silsbee Bee did previews for homecoming and Cruise N Silsbee ... so we were slammed this week. But ... they're done now. I did this week's as an image file, which allowed me to better tab the results. I think they are easier to read. Plus, you can copy and save the file to your computer if you like. Again, if you have corrections or additions, please let me know at [email protected] Thanks everyone ... Gerry
13. Silsbee has been too close in some big games not to have one breakthrough win against a top-quality opponent. Heartbreakers against Newton and Jasper should have these guys primed for an all-out battle with West Orange-Stark. Not that WO-S will lay down ... not at all. My concern is that Silsbee's greatest strength is its passing game, in spite of a young and undersized offensive line. Jeremy succeeds because he can move out of the pocket, find a receiver and get the ball there, on a dime, when he has to. Only this Friday night, we're looking at a good chance for some pretty nasty weather. That means a war in the trenches ... not sure the Tigers are up for that kind of battle. If they were, we would have seen some semblance of it in earlier games.
14. Oh now, come on guys ... it's really simple.... Just buy a Mac and you won't have to worry about viruses ... ;D ;D ;D
15. If you guys want me to include some small-school notables, send those to me as well and I'll post them as an additional list ... Email me complete stats for 2A and A passing, rushing, receiving to [email protected] Thanks, Gerry
16. If you guys have additional stats for other area schools, or if you see something that needs to be corrected or updates, please let me know. I absolutely don't want to exclude anyone or any school that wants to be on the list. The more people we have, the better the list it will be. Let me know ... gerry
17. This was a first try at this list. If you have stats for anyone in the greater-Golden Triangle area, I'd be happy to update the list. Absolutely not trying to leave anyone out. The more people listed, the better the list is ... let me know and I'll update asap. Thanks, gerry
18. This list is an ongoing project ... If you guys can tell me where to find stats for Livingston, Dayton, etc. I'd be happy to update the list and re-rank everyone. Absolutely not trying to exclude anyone. The more the merrier, right? gerry
19. Do you know what his attempt, completions, INTs and TDs are so I can correct the entire line?
