New UIL rules affect Basketball

The new UIL rules that were approved (subject to approval by the commissioner of education) do affect basketball.  Basketball is now limited to two tournaments plus 21 games in a season prior to the playoffs.  They have cut the number of tournaments allowed from 3 to two.  This may cause more teams to enter tournaments like HJ runs to guarantee more games.  These rules will go into affect next season (2013-2014).

Do y'all think this new rule will will change some of our annual tournaments? We will definitely see fewer tournaments. I am curious if it will make for larger tournaments with more guaranteed games.
Then you would need an extra school day use to fit in more games

I didn't see that second option in the rules just voted on. Where did you see the second option because I agree schools would choose that option.

This came straight from the UIL website in regards to the rule changes:

Section 1230 BASKETBALL PLAN
(c) NUMBER OF GAMES, TOURNAMENTS AND SITES.
(3) Total Number of Games. No team or student shall compete in more than
TWO invitational tournaments plus 21 basketball games in a
season, including all games prior to the first playoff game. This shall
include non-district and district games and games played in pre-scheduled
district tournaments. If the district champions have a bye for the first
round of the play-offs, those schools may schedule a warm-up game in
addition to the game limits. This additional game shall be played on a
non-school night with no loss of school time.
(6) Substituting Games for Tournaments. Two games may be substituted in place
of a tournament. If a team or student does not play in any invitational
tournaments,  FOUR additional games (total of  25) may be played

My source tells me that his superintendent is on the legislative council that approved the new ruling.  My source also tells me that his interpretation of the rules was verbally communicated to him by an official of the UIL.  Perhaps my source and his superintendent are incorrect or perhaps the rules are not listed in their entirety.  Thats the only two possibilities I can come up with.

From the minutes of the meeting where the rules were determined:

Proposed Amendment to the
University Interscholastic League Constitution and Contest Rules
A. Brief Explanation of Proposed Amendment
This amendment would allow schools to substitute tournaments for games in their
overall season limits for team sports.
B. Factual and Policy Justifications
Schools  already have the ability to substitute games for tournaments. This
amendment would provide schools additional flexibility in determining their season
schedules.
C. Proposed Amendment
Section 1220 (b) (4), Section 1230 (c) (6), Section 1270 (d) (5), Section 1280 (c)
(4), and Section 1330 (c) (4) of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules would be
amended as follows effective August 1, 2013, pending approval by the Commissioner of
Education:
Section 1220: BASEBALL PLAN
(b) NUMBER OF GAMES, TOURNAMENTS AND SITES.
(4) Substituting Games for Tournaments. Three games may be substituted in place
of a tournament. A TOURNAMENT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED IN PLACE
OF THREE GAMES. SCHOOLS CAN ONLY UTILIZE THIS EXCEPTION
TO PARTICIPATE IN ONE ADDITIONAL TOURNAMENT. If a team or
student does not play in any invitational tournaments, a total of 26 games may
be played.
Section 1230 BASKETBALL PLAN
(c) NUMBER OF GAMES, TOURNAMENTS AND SITES.8
    Athletics 7b
(6) Substituting Games for Tournaments. Two games may be substituted in place
of a tournament. A TOURNAMENT MAY BE SUBSTITUTED IN PLACE
OF TWO GAMES.  SCHOOLS CAN ONLY UTILIZE THIS EXCEPTION
TO PARTICIPATE IN ONE ADDITIONAL TOURNAMENT. If a team or
student does not play in any invitational tournaments, six additional games
(total of 27) may be played.

Not so sure it was incomplete.  I think one just simply needed to read along further down.

I now see that. I scrolled down some more and read where a team can indeed play 3 tourneys but will be limited to just 19 games instead of 21.

What that will do if a team decides to play a third tourney, they will find themselves have a few more off nights during the week than they have had in the past.
