Years PNG were 5A and who was the QB each year(to help settle an argument)  I think D. Long was a sophmore the last year PNG was 5A which I'm saying was 97 football season

No Long's Sophomore year was 97, but PNG was 4A.
PNG was 5A in '94 and '95. Went 1-9 in '94 and 3-7 in '95. Not sure who PNG QB was, but I do remember that Baytown Lee had Clint Stoener.

PNG went back to 4A in '96 and went 10-2. Corey Prosperie was QB.

There were 12 5A (then called 4A when there was B ball, now called 1A) teams in Orange and Jefferson Counties.

UIL athletics back then went from B-4A. The gave everyone another "A" so that there was not anymore B Ball. Class B then became Class A, 1A became 2A, 2A became 3A and so on. The districts did not change, just the names of the divisions.

Beaumont had its own 5A (then 4A) district within its city limits for a time. There were three schools each from BISD and SPISD. The six team district was French Buffaloes, Forest Park Trojans, Hebert Panthers, Charlton Pollard Bulldogs, Beaumont Royal Purples and South Park Greenies.

The south Jefferson County/Orange Country district was Orange Lutcher Stark Tigers, Vidor, Nederland, PNG, PA Jefferson Yellow Jackes and PA Lincoln Bumblebees. The West Orange Chiefs were 3A back then and later consolidated with Stark to create WO-S.

This is assuming that my memory is still holding up and I think the Beaumont district was 21-4A and the south county/Orange County district was 22-4A (now 5A).

I played at PNG in the eighties, ugh, but '85 year we played French, BC-P, West Brook, Nederland, Thomas Jefferson and West Orange Stark considered 5A...French was awesome in those years...I think tied for State Champs in 84....Kevin Smith played in those years at WO-S

Ned and PNG dropped from 5A to 4A in the Spring of 1988. The change went into effect the following Fall season of 1988. That was the year Big Ned returned to the playoffs since the mid 1960s. PNG went the following year.
PNG moved back up to 5A for two seasons. I believe it was the 94 & 95 seasons? Then back down to 4A where they have remained.
