Where's she going?

Back to Livingston.  Tried for other openings, but the Lions were the only takers.  Oh well, I guess someone could hear the clock ticking to midnight.  BH will still have VB talent, so it will be interesting to see if they get a serious coach.

While BH may still have good depth, the overall top end talent seems to be on the downwards slope which isn't good going into a 6A.  This is why the coach jumped ship. The thought of that career record getting worse and getting exposed was the straw that broke the camels back.

Word on the street is the job has been turned down several times already.

Jumped or pushed…semantics I guess.

Still no hire.  Maybe BH isn't ready for 6A VB yet.

Word is that the job has been filled and the replacement is coming from Alvin HS.  A step up for that coach, but not sure if it is for the BH VB program.  In 3 years of running the AHS program the overall record was 38-78 with a win percentage of just about 33% and only reaching the playoffs once.

Not sure what happened with this coach search, but on face value this is very underwhelming.  Either BH was not very flexible with the expected duties of a 6A head VB coach and were turned down by multiple targets or not much effort was put into the search.

Is it definitely Alvin HS or Alvin ISD?

You can’t really look at the W-L record as a true indication of coaching ability. Alvin does not have many club players and the talent pool is not very deep. Their district contained Dawson, Manvel, Shadow Creek, and Pearland.

Getting someone who has coached in 6A is better than someone who was an Assistant at Friendswood (Goodman) or HC at GCM (Veen). This coach has been an Assistant at Manvel, and a HC in a 6A program. I’m willing to give her a chance.  With Veen leaving so late and the requirement to coach a second sport, we may have not had many applying.

If Alvin didn't have many club players then how much coaching up of non-club players actually happened? Based on the record, it wasn't much.  To say that win loss record is not an accurate indicator of success is just not true. Not saying teams lacking club players can become world beaters, but they can be more competitive than AHS's record would indicate. The idea that any 6A coach is better than a 5A, 4A, etc... is also not very accurate.

This hire just strikes me as a scramble because BH was turned down a handful of times and maybe overestimated their aura.

Lastly, say what you want about Veen (and there is a lot), but the teams that GCM fielded when Veen (nee Mulryan) was the coach were much more successful than what Alvin has put up in the past number of years.

I really think you are trying to compare apples to oranges. Alvin’s district is significantly more difficult than what BH or GCM has been playing in. And Alvin really has struggled with lack of talent depth. When Veen was at GCM, she had a guaranteed 8-10 district wins due to the super weak district, regardless of the talent she did or did not have. So I personally don’t think W-L records tell the whole story.

I have not heard anything about people turning down the job, so that is news to me. And when I referenced the 6A vs Goodman and Veen, it was more to support the fact that this coach at least has more experience in the 6A world - meaning it’s better that we get someone with more experience, not that she is necessarily a better coach. My worry was we would get an assistant from a 3 or 4A school who has been coaching all of 2 years.  We really had several factors hindering our search - timing, second sport, the intimidation of moving up to 6A.
